  • We are breeding Tawny Emperor butterflies, Asterocampa clyton. In previous videos, we showed you how to get a female tawny emperor to lay eggs. In this video, the eggs will hatch and begin to eat.... HUNDREDS OF THEM! WE will now begin a journey of breeding the tawny emperor butterfly and will show you the entire life cycle of this incredible species.

Very cool. Look forward to seeing the rest of the rearing process.
I use the same large totes with the blue seals to hold my specimen boxes. I can (snugly) fit 8 of the white cardboard boxes into one tote. Hopefully the seal holds in the fumigant and keeps out the dermestids.

Butterfly gardening is the best. I have a couple sugarberry. They're really popular. I see American snout and question mark caterpillars on it. No hackberry or tawny emperors yet but I know where to find them.

Funny to here you talk about how hype you get aftwr going for a certain species and finally getting what you want! I know that feeling when looking for ans rearing silkmoths.

Beautiful caterpillars! But why would they crawl down into the water rather than stay where the leaves are?

They follow silk threads laid by siblings. If one walks down into the water for whatever reason, others undoubtedly follow

@@keysmoths5336 Last night, my fifth instar black swallowtail somehow ended up inside the bottle of water holding the hostplant. The opening wasn't big enough to fall into, he'd have to had walked straight down. Why would he have done that? It was still alive once I pated him dry but doesn't move its prolegs or abdomen. It can only move his true legs and the head. Last night it used its osmeterium when I was trying to revive it. Is there anything that I can do?
