CAMOUFLAGE BUTTERFLY LIFE CYCLE THE OLIVE HAIRSTREAK | Callophrys gryneus
The olive hairstreak is one camouflaged butterfly in every stage of its life. From the caterpillar to the chrysalis all the way to the adult, this butterfly lives up to its name and blends into its green environment. The subspecies we have in Florida is Callophrys gryneus sweadneri. We were able to get a few females and showed you in previous videos where we found them and how we got the females to lay us some eggs as well as the early stages of the life cycle of this beautiful butterfly.

2 COLOR FORMS OF THE DINGY PURPLEWING BUTTERFLY | Eunica monima
Переглядів 1677 годин тому
Did you know that female of the dingy purplewing butterfly has two color forms? This was something that we stumbled upon when we found a cluster of caterpillars one day and reared them through to adult and took notes along the way. The two different color forms are strikingly different and to my knowledge have never been published in any journal other than the Southern Lepidopterists' Society n...

Now the eggs are hatching and it's time to start caring for these tiny little caterpillars. Let me show you how I did it. #keysmoths #lifecycleofbutterfly #lifecycle #keysmoths
20 PET MONARCH BUTTERFLIES
Переглядів 350День тому
I have 20 monarch butterfly caterpillars on my giant milkweed plant and I decided to raise them inside and make sure that they all survived. I really can't call them "pets" as I am letting them fly once they emerge from the chrysalis but it is a neat thing to do to raise them inside your house. #monarchbutterflies #monarchcaterpillar #monarchbutterfly #keysmoths
ROADSIDE BUTTERFLY HUNTING DIFFICULTIES MOWERS CUT DOWN ALL THE FLOWERS
Переглядів 24314 днів тому
Collecting butterflies on the roadside can be very fruitful but oh boy does it have its challenges. From 'Karens' to mowers destroying your flowers that are attracting the butterflies, to hazards from passing vehicles, collecting on the side of the road is a load and frustrating endeavor. In this video, we have a mower come along just as we arrive at our collecting spot and plow over all of the...

MONARCH AND QUEEN BUTTERFLY CATERPILLARS WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
Переглядів 72121 день тому
breeding monarch and queen butterflies in South Florida is an easy and rewarding project. The caterpillars of these species look very similar and eat the same plant. The larval host plant are those in the milk weed family. In this case, we are using giant milkweed and have a bunch of these beauties going through their life cycle. What is the difference between the two species? Watch this video ...

WORST MOSQUITO YEAR IN RECENT HISTORY BUTTERFLY TRAPPING IN BROWARD COUNTY
Переглядів 279Місяць тому
The mosquitoes were awful this year. It seemed as though from April all the way through to November, the mosquito numbers in South Florida have been quite unbearable in many natural settings. In this video, we are bait trapping in Broward County Florida looking for viceroy butterflies. The mosquitoes were so bad that it actually caused me to stop the survey! #mosquito #mosquitobites #butterflyt...
CATCHING DARK SOUTH FLORIDA VICEROY BUTTERFLY - MIMICS QUEEN BROWARD COUNTY
Переглядів 217Місяць тому
I spent some time in Broward County looking for the south Florida viceroy butterfly. The goal is to find live females of this species to get them to lay eggs for us to document the life cycle. In the rest of the country, the viceroy butterfly is orange and mimics the poisonous monarch butterfly. Down here, Queen butterflies are far more common therefore the viceroy looks a bit different. They a...

MOTH EGGS WITH A WINDOW! THE IO MOTH LIFE CYCLE
I wonder if there’s an ultraviolet pattern on the plain females.
Great footage David unusual that they just eat leaves normally lycaenids eat either the flower buds or developing seed pods of the hostplant👍
Could this be the reason they take so long to mature as I imagine there’s more nutrition in seed pods and flowers rather than leaves
Lets go rickyyyy
Awesome to see so many butterflies in the wild👍
Crazy looking sawfly caterpillar on willow we get similar species in the uk which feed an hawthorn crategus monogyma they make beautiful shiny gold metallic cocoons👍
Did you see that the monarch butterfly population this year is the worst it’s ever been. It’s been a very sad thing. They said the population has dropped by 90% since the nineteen eighteens
Most informative.
Thanks !!!
That’s pretty cool just goes to show we never stop learning👍
That’s for sure. It’s an awesome adventure!!
a random buttefly came on my wall and is probs sleeping rn and i scrolled on shorts, later on i wanted to see it again and i saw it struggling to fly in the fan😭😭 it can barely fly rn and i turned off the fan, okay that butterfly thats on my wall again now looks so scary fr. but i dont want it to leave😭
I’m sorry to hear about your butterfly. You can feed it sugar water if you want to care for it
@keysmoths5336 aw tyyy but yesterday it flew somewhere else so idk where it went, probs outside of my house but hopefully it's wings recoverr and tysm againn
Those ants are a real nightmare sound advice though doesn’t matter what your breeding never put all your eggs in one basket I breed a huge amount of koi carp, axolotls and of course butterflies and moths and I always split the batches of offspring just in case
For sure!!!! Gotta protect them. It’s tough with these ants!!!
Helloooo 👋 I need your help @keysmoths I found an io moth caterpillar, i housed it in my "butterfly hotel". She emerged beautifully. I released it. About 11 days later SHE CAME BACK TO ME 😭😭😭 I know it's ger, because i compared pictures and the markings are identical. She had one broken wing and the other one is cracked 😭 I put her back in the butterfly hotel, she's been there for a week, and now she laid a bunch of eggs 😭 what's the best plant that i need to feed the baby caterpillars if they make it. HELP! Please & Thank you!
Great video.
Thanks
The eggs look like tiny sea urchins 🙂
For sure!!! I see it!
Where do you get your nets and extensions? When do olive hairstreaks emerge in your area? Thank you . Enjoy your videos
Awesome. I’m glad you enjoy. Unfortunately I got my extension net from a place called Bioquip which is closed down. I’m currently looking at how to make my own extension net
Olive hairstreaks emerge in March / April in North Florida
Thanks ! Yeah I loved Bioquip . I wonder who they sourced from?
just found one on my christmas tree in louisiana
Really!!!!! That’s super cool!!!
Cool pictures of the baby larvae 👍
Thanks
Those eggs are really cool. They look like tiny sea urchins in the close-up! The 1st instar larvae look cool as well and the adults are absolutely gorgeous butterflies. Nice work David
Thanks brother!!!! This was a great experiment
Awesome video! I've a macro video of a hairstreak larvae hatching on my channel. My first time recording it. I waited about 5 days for it to hatch. Most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
Fantastic!!! I’ll check out your channel
We have Juniper (or Olive) Hairstreaks here up north. It's amazing they can survive in such a variety of habitats. They live in sandy forests here with Red Cedar.
Agreed. They are very versatile!!!! Beautiful bug
As an entomologist I approve 👍
Fantastic!!!! Thanks
Had a problem last year with caterpillars turning black and dying. Sad to see.
I’m so sorry to hear that! It suck when that happens
Another great one.
Thanks
You’ve gotta love furry tiger moth caterpillars they are my favourite for sure
Oh I do!!!!
I’ve experienced the barbed hairs also from cocoons of lasciocampidae larvae they stick in your skin like cactus spines
It’s so interesting this phenomenon
The chlorocresol packages are a really great idea I struggled to keep my specimens mould free in Costa Rica in fact even my clothes in the closet went mouldy
For sure. I’ve had that happen more times than I’d like to admit!!!
I’ve reared the deaths head hawk moth acherontia Atropos before continually through the winter with 24 hour daylight at 26 degrees Celsius and this produced good viable adults which bred well sometimes if you rear them in total darkness the opposite happens and the adults have a low fertility rate
Yeah - to do it right, you need light!!!
I mean they aren't and shouldn't be considered pets as they are still wild insects.
I know. It’s just a word in the title
Monarchs are so cool they are so efficient at eating they don’t waste any of the hostplant
Agreed!! They mow!!!!
Hunting bugs with the wifey❤😊 John Deere! Taking out the sweetness!😣😖
Hahha
The main supplier we have in the uk is Watkins and Doncaster they sell a wide range of entomolical equipment just google them they have a online website they have been going for at least 30 years they are very good
Yes it’s quite disturbing to think how much things have changed in the last 20-30 years we have a species of tiger here in the uk called the garden tiger arctia caja which was extremely common found in every garden it has completely disappeared except for a few tiny remnants mainly on islands in coastal areas I’d love to know what causes these declines all different theories abound global warming pesticides parasitoids I can understand these things affecting some species but pretty much all our species have experienced a 75% decline which is huge in fact it would be very hard to class any species as pests these days due to the low numbers
I know. It’s really sad!!!! Same thing here
I’ve reared grass feeding butterfly larvae of the speckled wood before on bamboo leaves which lasts longer in water not sure if it would work for moth species
Interesting. I’ll have to try that out
Always tricky rearing larvae on cut grass it goes bad real fast
Oh yeah. Its tricky
Cool butterfly the lignin vitae wood was used to make the lower half of fishing floats because of its weight and density it made the floats self cocking ie stand up in the water you could cast it out further too due to its weight
Interesting!!!!! Are you a fisherman? You should check out my other UA-cam channel - “Watch Your Lip”. All about fishing
The faithful beauty is awesome we use a similar method in the uk we call it a relaxing box which consists of layers of cotton wool and kitchen roll soaked in a liquid which is water and a few drops of dettol which acts as an anti fungal then place the specimens on the tissue seal it up and place the box on somewhere warm like a radiator or boiler leave it for a day or so and they should be pliable I like the look of your method I’m definitely going to give it a try 👍
Fantastic
Cicadas don’t make noise by rubbing their legs on those plates!
We’ll said these guys are the unsung heroes who are very hard to replace
100%
I always love it when people stop and ask and are genuinely curious. Its great and honestly doesn't happen all that often. Its fun interacting with interested people
I always check the front of my car after driving anywhere near decent habitat. Every now and then you get decent specimens 😁
Hey where you thought the butterfly had gotten out you can see it crawling towards the top of the net ring.
Oh yeah! Interesting!!! Little escape artist
@keysmoths5336 pretty easy to mistake when your out in the sun for sure
I once saw vegetation mowed down right next to a sign that read, "Do Not Mow."
It’s maddening!!!!!
Fantastic video David this brings back happy memories I spent four weeks at the ranchu naturalista turrialba in Costa Rica and two weeks in the cloud forest the light trapping was mind blowing amazing species of sphingidae Urania dirphia automeris arctidae wasp moths and so many more plus all the butterfly species morpho caligo parides heliconidae etc and all the bird species especially the hummingbirds I went on my own when I was 20 which is over 30 years ago and I still think about it now the one bit of advice I can give to anyone out there is if you possibly can go there then do it the experience will stay with you forever
I couldn’t have said it better myself brother!!
I can’t understand the need to constantly mow grass verges they make a perfect mini environment and act as wildlife corridors
Agreed!!! It was terrible timing for sure!!
Here in England our local authorities have finally decided not to mow all the road verges too little too late the butterfly’s have already been wiped out
Oh that’s sad!!! It’s been getting more and more difficult to find these bugs.
Unharmed? I don't think so.
Tricky to rear I have bred the holly blue before which lays its eggs on the flower buds and developing berries of holly and ivy mould on the food plant is always the killer even sleeved outside they can be tricky hot weather helps by speeding up the process👍
They are super tricky!!!
It’s tough when your working to keep multiple species on the go I’ve had times when I’ve been rearing 30 plus different species at the same time cleaning cages till 2am worth it for the end results though👍
Haha!!! 100% worth it
Beautiful butterflies I’d never get anything done with all those flying around I’d spend the whole day at the gas station what a cool distraction 👍
I get it! Self control!!!!!!!! Super important!!!
