Return to the Valley of the Cirio - Gypsum Buckwheats & Giant Cacti in Baja California, Mexico

- On the subtly erotic textures of the gypsum-rich Late Cretaceous Marine Sediments in this Baja California Fog Deserts we complete a Floristic Survey of these badland formation and discover a little-known member of the genus Eriogonum as well as enough selenite to make any Etsy Witch squeel with glee.
We also re-plant a patch of tiny Cardon Cacti, Pachycereus pringlei, to a more suitable home than the barren exposures of the gypsiferous hills.
co-feautring Alan Rockefeller and Jordan Jacobs, two mycologists from California.
Your contributions support this content. It sounds clichéd, but it's true. Whether it's travel expenses, vehicle repair, or medical costs for urushiol poisoning (or rockfalls, beestings, hand slices, toxic sap, etc), your financial support allows this content to continue so the beauty of Earth's flora can be made accessible to the rest of us in the degenerate public. At a time when so much is disappearing beneath the human footprint, CPBBD is willing to do whatever it takes to document these plant species and the ecological communities they are a part of before they're gone for good.

I know I'm watching the right stuff when I have to look up the definition of different words every few minutes! Thank you for teaching and caring about plants and whatnot.
11:00 spoke to me as an aspiring mycologist/lichenologist. I always stop in my tracks when I see a cool looking one or a particularly populated surface, drives my walking buddies nuts. You'd think more people would be excited by symbiotic organisms but I guess they're a hard sell?
LOL when you talked about the Pachycereus pringle not going to make it I thought "save them" then you did!
My thought exactly. He did what had to be done.
also: this channel is fucking therapy
110%
Brilliant Joey and crew....Keep 'em coming.........................WE Love you.
Thanks for the buckwheat knowledge, and the replanting. No joke brother❤
What an amazing landscape!
Damn that is cool habitat. Love the drone footage. Giant gypsum clusters were a pleasant surprise!
Little Boojums hangin' out/
Gettin' goin'/
The soil's stickin' to my feet/
In clods and clumps/
I think it's time to go.

But also, I thought you weren't supposed to water cactus in after transplanting/repotting/fuxin with their roots?
22:25 That California Poppy is enjoying itself that gypsum dungeon
such an alien landscape
While that Allium is technically edible it's really not a choice flavor. Won't kill you, will ruin your trail meal.
Wonderful again. Loved this walkthrough.
something about that trio right dere! just brings a smile to my prickly rotten face!
One of the best UA-cam channels and only 370k subscribers!?? WTF!
Crime pays but botany, tragically...
How did an Italian from Chicago wind up in South Tx? 😂 Love your videos brother!!
I love the lichen!!
I ask myself every day
whoa talk about a voiceover!
It's like smorgasbord of plant varieties there. The land was lower many millions of years ago and was basically a sandbar
as well as a wetland around those sandbars with sea water loving grasses and all land since uplifted in places. As for
the round tree stumps level to the ground they are indeed petrified remains of a forest. Search the petrified forest of El
Rosario. It is further west.
Watering in can help plant roots make better contact with the soil, so it's usually a good idea(even with the rain). Bet all 5 of the little cactus make it either way
THANK YOU TONY....
WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO TRAVEL TO TURKEY AND FIND SOME SILPHIUM !!!!!!!
COLLECT SOME SEEDS, PROPRAGATE AND PLANT !!!!!
BE THE DUDE TO BRING IT BACK !!!!!
i really appreciate your videos, go on forever please.
thank you so much for showing fouquieria columnaris! I love ocotillo from the mainland and have always wanted to see columnaris in person to look at it as closely as you showed us
Hah, I just knew those cactus seedlings would get re-planted. Nice!
New here. Thought that was prince harry at first look. Lol
14:43 That silverfish looking bastard is actually a Firebrat. Not crazy about common names myself but Firebrat always sounded cool to me.
I agree, and there is some taxonomic controversy about how these critters are related, and whether they are insects at all.
Tell us about firebrats
@@CrimePaysButBotanyDoesnt they love to fuck up your books. they chew holes in the pages and then shit all over inside the book.
I thought fire brats were that group of people that party out the desert every year! Lol
wire’s illusive ’outdoor miner’ spotted!!
Hey Joey, how's it going? I see the wildfires in Texas and hope nothing important to you is currently on fire.
Think he's on the other side, closer to the border
Texas is a big place. Joey is in South Texas now, hundreds of miles from the Panhandle.
@@WastrelWayTexas is big??? Really??? I was just wishing him luck. You never know where Joey, or his family might be.
I bought a tiny 2ft tall cardon in a garden center. I also grow P. weberi from seeds. Hopefully, by the time they get big, I’ll have the space and money to build them a tall greenhouse. If not, then do I really need a roof? Weather is warming up anyways. A bit of rain never hurt nobody.
Reminds me of a cactus an uncle had, got to his cieling and stopped growing wihout touching it. wonder if most plants normally do that
Hey dude. We found you a few years ago. Just wanted to drop by and say that you’re awesome. After all these years, do you have a favorite landscape or place you have studied? Anywhere you want to go back to but haven’t had the chance?
Chile
The Baja desert unto the sea is one of the incredible places in this world. But what about the grasses Tony?
In previous videos Tony said he is not a fan of grasses 😂
Out of curiosity, do you know of any books (or resources of any kind, really) that approach advanced topics in a down to earth style similar to your own?
I have a few friends who are interested in the nitty-gritty details of niche topics but are put off by the usual academic tone.
I'll have one coming out in 2025 and it will be laden with profanity and brief, simplified explanations of some complex topics along with directories of where to look for more detailed info
I love Baja
If you ever want to do a video in Maine...so much!
I loved that part about the lichens so much that I clipped it to share with my friends and introduce them to your channel. I feel the same way!
Jackrabbits don't make burrows. Could have been a desert cottontail, _Sylvilagus audubonii_
I think more likely a desert tortoise.
Yes!!!❤
Outstanding!
I like Lichens.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The dawgs:

That invasive Aizoaceae looks like Mesembryanthemum guerichianum. This species becomes dominant in degraded landscapes in South Africa where there is clear evidence of overbrowsing by domestic herbivores. Is it invading in similar areas (human-disturbance or overgrazed)?
Cool that you’re hanging out Valle de los Cirios ..I always camp in that area. Favorite area,Thanks for the run down. Saludes
no camel ???? and watermelon ??? or sweet potato ???? or cassava ??? or pineapples ????
What a beautiful place, I would like to just stay out there all day, exploring the surroundings, just like you’re doing. My lawn doesn’t do that for me.
I ever tell you it seems John Hancock signed for canals to be built so our resources would start making him money the very same year that British currency wasn't going to be accepted in these United States? I know it seems off topic but something you might be interested in which I haven't seen anyone online piece together. You already probably know greed within electrical and other industries ruined aquifers and migrations by way of damming. I'll link a couple short proofs, hope you enjoy them brother
anybody ever tell you... you're too nosey? you always want to know what they are, doin'n'dare... they got a life... why don't you get one... just fukkin round. luv tone.
I would come out to Baja California and look at plants, rocks, and take photos. I frequently take art shots of random lichen on my trees. Also, mushrooms, I know at least four or five species of mushrooms in a nearby forest to me.
Come look at the magnolia vallartensis flowering or the seed dispersion just starting in the PVR high sierra.
My guess would be that the sandstone is also a tad more barren due to forming a very dense clayey soil which makes it more difficult for plants to penetrate it with their roots (along with the gypsum content and drying out in the summer which you mentioned). IIRC some of the east African savannas are formed by a similar phenomenon, where volcanic ash makes it very difficult for plants other than grasses to get their roots established.
3m:5s in this one also ua-cam.com/video/5-f3esRYw18/v-deo.htmlsi=JQnrIhmOMOO8j8gK but consider if all waters would be oxygenated like these due to the proof of the prior short I sent
It's cool to see a 'Ragweed' species that looks so different from the allergy culprits we have in the midwest
The beard genes are strong with you!🧔 Why don't you Grow it out dense and wild like your front yard?
Lichen is SO underrated
Im just constantly like how do you know all this crap
By the way I have petrified wood from that area(Nuevo Rosarito) ..
22:23 *Eschscholzia, named after the German naturalist Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz.
Love that you and Alan continue to explore together!
Hey Joey! Love the video. Do you or does anyone know who the hell to contact if you find an endangered plant in an old seed collection and cant grow stuff for shit?
Hit up a Botanic garden
Oy Tony we have a remnant isolated population of Quercus Bicolor jus South of Canada's capital. At the bottom of a dredged lake. Same watershed with the Bahgs and Saracenia Purpurea getting ripped out by Scotts for the Miracle Gro crap.
Using peat for soil is insane. Hopefully it goes out of style eventually. Be sure to Lowercase that species epithet next time btw.
Greatness
That looks like Euphorbia xanti growing in the middle of those crumbled rocks at 15:00
That species is a large shrub and it grows in much hotter areas
IS ficking a ponctuation mark?
There’s nobody on earth that I would more appreciate the chance to go out botanizing and identifying plants with. However the fact that he despises the general public and human beings as a whole….which I feel the same way, I doubt he would be interested in botanizing with any of his UA-cam followers because of his disdain for basically everything that humans do and the risk of showing rare plants to people who might poach them later. So I understand why he wouldn’t be interested in botanizing with the fans. I feel like we might bond over despising the general public and both having a George Carlin type interpretation of the “human tumor“ that depressingly sprawls into and ruins every habitat. Though I’m at peace with the fact I’m sure I’ll probably never get the chance to meet my internet hero, he is beloved by many including myself because he hates people, we’ll never get a chance to meet him because he hates people😂😂😂😂 I think he’s the shit because he has a huge following of fans and I doubt he’d ever want to run into any of us😂😂😂😂 meeting his fans wouldn’t improve his day whatsoever, in fact it might make it worse😂 he has a huge following and prefers to avoid most people………it makes me a bigger fan, I hate people so I understand him not wanting to meet any random people from the internet, but the fact that so many people really like him and like what he does and the fact that he probably doesn’t want to cross paths any of those people I find kinda hilarious and just makes me like him more, most celebrities or internet celebrities love soaking up the attention and the fandom they get from their notoriety, he seems genuinely uninterested, just wants to educate people about what’s being lost. I’m sure he won’t see this but he’s genuinely my favorite person on UA-cam, thanks for being so cool and for all the work you do trying to preserve habitats and ecosystems. usually it’s easy to come up with reasons to not like someone but after watching this channel for years……..he genuinely seems like a really good dude, I feel like he would be a really awesome guy to know in person. Because he is so……not a fan of human beings, I feel like getting to know him on a personal level is not something that many people get to do. He’s UA-cam famous so I know he does meet a lot of people but the circle of people he goes out in the field with seems pretty small. Though I would really appreciate the opportunity to meet the guy, the fact that he seems to not like attention and actively avoids civilization and people is probably he is so well liked by so many. We listen to him trash talk other people and we laugh but I’m sure we all know we too would probably fall into the list of categories of people he doesn’t really like 😂😂😂 we all watch this channel knowing he probably wouldn’t like any of us in real life 😂😂😂😂😂
I've been hesitating to comment bc I'm an avid gardener and don't want to make him puke.🤮 Relocating lots of native cedars along property lines. killing my lawn little by little but I rent... and enjoy wiffleball, soccer, football etc. Probably killed 25 to 30 percent. Running around on grass has its benefits. Also my lawn is packed with clover and a haven for bees.
Jesus relax I don't hate anybody save for 1 or 2 people and that's on a purely ideological, some what humorous level
@@CrimePaysButBotanyDoesntif you're ever in Central NJ, The Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge and Duke Farms (my neck) may be of interest. Few people realize NJ is a peninsula.
When I say “hate” I mean to just prefer being alone or with a few trusted people. honestly when most people say they hate something nowadays they usually just mean they don’t like it. I understand comedic disdain is different than genuine malicious hatred. I hope I did not offend or get taken the wrong way. I just meant it seems pretty funny that we all like this person who understands why people suck as a species and we find his lack of enthusiasm for his fellow man very endearing. If you wanted to hang out with someone like Taylor swift or someone else who’s mega famous you would understand that they don’t associate with their fans because…..they’re Taylor swift. I feel like if he had a reason for not wanting to hangout with a bunch of random fans from the internet it probably wouldn’t be because he thought he’s better than everyone else……..it’s probably just because unassuming looking plants growing in a roadside ditch are more interesting than most of our personalities and I was saying that’s probably why we like this channel so much, buckwheats are more interesting than most of us. Because I similarly prefer nature to other people and I’m sure other fans of the channel feel similarly, it seems that this channel is probably so popular because of the antisocial vibes which is ironic and funny
Can you do a parody of living in an HOA?
That selenite looks like it used to be a turtle shell
*Waves at Alan* ~ Hi all!
Calyxes are just a conglomeration of sepels. That's Bingo on my Crime Pays Bingo card.
Have you been to the red wood forest?
Would love to see you go diving to study marine plants! Kelp Pays But Botany Doesn't when?
Bonus points if you bring Alan to get some marine fungi cultures
18:36 amazing scene, wow!
Come over here talk stuff
no really cause what WAS going on in the cretaceous??
jaysus, this was an incredible landscape to see with your commentary. i also feel validated knowing i’m not the only nerd whipping out a macro lens to better see a flower or some shit in public.
Why is grass so hard to label?
Interesting biome!
I adore lichen...
i thought i was the only one to ever fiddly-fuck around.
Lesser Known Beans
💚
thank you. rainy and cold in Los Angeles.
Atriplex kinda resembles strawberry blite.
How safe (Cartel activity) is the Baja area?
Where can we see Alan's photography?
The Mushroom Observer website or his social media pages
Fascinated by Fungi is his YT, he’s got terrific vids on Mushroom Wonderland, and others.
@@canadiangemstones7636 that's not Alan lol
Aint no pollinators anymore
i read there are possibly too many bees now with all the trendy backyard hives made of plastic on the other side of the planet
Silly string ! 😅
Before it gets hot and humid
Id rather look at plants than tik tok any day
