Joey, thank you for this video, I sincerely appreciate the jokes at the start about shitty family situations. Feeling very blue and grey, with a climate destabilized foggy rainy Christmas in the Midwest (50 damn degrees), and spending today alone.
I already planned to do plant stuff today to make the day my own and sew my weird Astro cultivars, and it feels comforting and serendipitous to have seen this posted. Ngl, I found some tears when you were shitting on family Christmas, which was surprising cause I didn’t know they were there.

Hey at least your mess is in a garage. I grow all my plants in an unused bedroom and i get in trouble quite a bit when my garden supplies start migrating everywhere.
My tip for cacti is also to use either distilled or rainwater if you have a well for your water, the minerals build up in the soil and make it less porous so the water absorbs poorly and can cause some weird nutrient issues. For bigger cacti water heavily and infrequently so excess nutrients get cycled down through the soil especially if you tio dress with fertilizer and use a wide shallow pot instead of a tall deep one.

Tony I have another way .. break open the fruit into a big cup and fill it halfway with water and then put the fruit into the cup and you open up.. add some Dawn or some other cheap dish soap, and let that soak in then be able to pour off the goo which will be broken up from the soap and you can pull the little skins out of there, rinse the water a few times nice and slow and you have just sweet seeds that you can plant in anyway you want like individually and threes or fives but you know we always try to keep it oddwith me kind of odd

Also dragonfruit can go crazy indoors since they are scrabblers in their native habitat so if you wanna grow them inside make sure you have space, and also plant them along with a sturdy pole to attach to and cut off side branches until it reaches the top and then allow branches to trail down from there, at least if you wanna try for fruit. Think of then like the cacti version of ivy (including growth rate, they grow FAST for a succulent)

I agree. I have a couple a grew from seed that are a couple years old and I cant get over how fast they grow. So weird to have a vining cactus that grows so fast, it literally climbs up the side of my tent, flops over and crawls on top of all my other plants in my indoor garden. Have to do my first real pruning on them to see if I can encourage them to flower. Getting into more varieties but dragon fruit was a good place to start since seeds are easy to get and the plants are really forgiving.

@@musicman9901 we ended up using our extra to give as treats to our iguana and parrots, they say it's delicious when we rubbed off the spines (also I hate dragon fruit spines, they stick in my skin and itch like crazy!). @@iamjustkiwi wait, you feed them the branches themselves or you're talking about the fruit? Funny you should mention the spines; was just cleaning out and rearranging my plants in my indoor tent and had to move the dragon fruit. Got loaded with little tiny spines that break off if you touch them, they really are annoyingly itchy unlike san pedro cactus spines. Couldn't believe when I moved my plants that some of the branches must have been around 6 feet long, just hard to tell when they are left to climb everything. My zone isn't warm enough for them either so I keep mine inside but they are so huge at this point I think ill take some cuttings to put outside for the summer just for fun.

Regarding damping off fungus. It is far better to prevent it than to try to treat after it has established its self in a tray of seedlings. Always treat the seed with fungus and drench the soil in the pot before planting. Add fungicide to the water that is used to water the seed directly after planting

I have some Tillandsia seeds that I'm trying to sprout. I had two plants bloom at once, so I rubbed the flowers together without using lube and both plants made seed pods. I took the seeds from one of them. It seems that there is only one seed per pod. I'll get the seeds from the other plant later, since I have no idea how to tell when the seeds are ready. Since Tillandsia don't grow in soil, I took one of my pieces of bark and put the seeds in crevices in the bark. I'm using natural light and I spray them every day, as many times as I remember to. Wish me luck. I also think that making pizzas etc. is good for that Seasonal Affective Disorder, and I usually end up going into a sort of hibernation as well.

I gave one to my doctor (with a little instruction sheet) and told him that if he takes care of it, it might bloom in 10 or 15 years. I think he thought I was kidding, but no. They are in no hurry at all, since they are essentially immortal.

It seems like it would make a lot more sense for someone who has never grown cacti before to pick a common species rather than a rare one. Not because common ones are easier to grow, necessarily, but they're cheaper and you don't need to feel bad if you screw it up. I have ordered from Mesa Garden a few times before (first time more than 20 years ago) and will say that they really do have a nice selection and I have no complaints about their service. I have also done dragon fruit seeds from the grocery store. Not recommended: Most Opuntioideae (often hard to germinate and grow into hard to handle plants), Blossfeldia (the moss will be bigger than the plants for years), commercial mixed cactus packets from the hardware store (lots of Opuntia, hard for a non-expert to identify plants), anything illegal in your jurisdiction (of course, perhaps you don't care about consequences).

Instead of a 500w background heater to keep frost out of house , i swapped heater for 2 250w growlights and grow all my winter herbs and salads for same cost! plus i don`t need lights on in the living room !

I know I'm risking getting lectured by the organic crowd, and I'm not sure if Phytophthora and related Oomycete parasitic algae is a problem with Cactuses, but for those who have problems with them killing their started plants there is a new great spray consisting of Dimethomorph+Ametoctradin. Made by BASF, commercial names vary, it's called Orvego here. It does wonders, it stopped a full blown late blight infestation in my tomatoes, and works on Pythium that causes damping off of young seedlings as well. Best used preventively.

Oh man i started some little yoties and figs from seed when it started to get cold. And then proceeded to start cherries and tamarind since they made me feel so good! Thank you for encouraging folks to be around nature even when its cold! Also do you use straight vermiculite for cactus seeds? ive seen good results for yoties but i havent had good luck this time
