Great Video.
Waiting for the new starter to come for my ML550!
Feel good about doing this job now!
Cheers!
You'll be fine, the hardest part of this job was probably getting the starter bolts loosened, but if you have access to power tools or at least a breaker bar that will do the trick.
Hello, enjoyed your video. I'm getting ready to do the same job on my 2007 GL450. My dilemma is whether to purchase the 1.4kw reman Bosch or the 1.1kw new Bosch? I noticed you went with the reman. Your thoughts? Thank You!
Hello Ann, this was actually a family members car, but she got her ordered it online from the site Parts Geek, took about a week to arrive. but you can always check with your local parts stores and see if they carry it.
also, please consider subscribing, I need some help to grow my channel.
At what point are these going out? I get some weak turning over of my 2012 GL550 from time to time and it is on its original starter at 160k. I am debating replacing it before it fails for peace of mind.
Hey Stephen, this car was in the High 170k range at the time of the this starter replacement, I myself can't say if or around what milage they go out on these cars, but I would suggest you getting load test done on your battery before going to the starter, a weak cell can also cause that same issue you're having..
@@thediyyardie7192 I checked the battery it is sitting at 12.8V and was replaced last year. It seems to be weaker after driving it and doing a quick stop of about 10 minutes or so.
@@Steven-xj2rf did you do a load test or just a regular voltage test?
@@thediyyardie7192 just voltage. I will have to look into picking up a load tester.
@@Steven-xj2rf Autozone or Advance will do that check of free..
Great video. I followed step by step. I’m sure it’s now easy job but I managed the process. I started to test awesome my engine started up. I have a question. After one started, it’s dead again. It’s went back to same problem before I replaced new starter. Everything working except start the engine. No crank no start. What should I do? Or what did I do wrong?
Hi Charles, did you check the old starter once you removed it from your car? its not that you necessarily did anything wrong, there could be an issue with some part of your ignition system, try turning on the ignition to where all the lights on the dash are on, step on the brake, place the car in to the neutral position, see if it will start in neutral, if it does, you most likely have a faulty neutral safety switch, if still no start, I would check starter relay, the battery and the new starter, even though its new, it could still be faulty.. Your ignition switch could also be faulty.. you will need to do a process of elimination to determine where the issue is..
Thanks a lot showing the details. It’s great that we don’t need remove the exhaust pipe or jack up the engine as suggested by some channels
You're welcome Ted, all of that helps to make the part easier to access, but a lot more work, I try to find the faster and easier ways to get it done..
thank you very much Nice video
You're quite welcome, glad to hear my video was of some help to you..
Withall the labor involved with replacement of the starter, thank you for the tip on testing the starter by jumping it. Good tip with all of the defective parts on the market these days.
@OCI Support, you're welcome, I hate doing the same job twice..
Great detailed video ..no need to take part of the exhaust like some videos advice to gain more space ...I am ready to do mine ..thank you
Much thanks, I do these videos to show that there are alternate ways to do these repairs without all that extreme teardown, I try to get a job done the most efficient way possible, the more I get accomplished fast and efficient the better it is for me. Good luck with your job, feel free to reach out if you get stuck.
3 hrs in shop i put in best starter
This is great video
This is actually easy out
Try taking starter out of 5.4L Ford Expedition now that’s pain. 👍🏻
@Miki Miki, I can't remember if I've ever done a starter on 5.4L Ford Exp, if its as difficult as you say it is, I guess I would remember, but much thanks for the compliments on my video..
@@thediyyardie7192 yes it’s difficult
there are three bolts bottom two are on but bolt on top you have no access.
I had to disassemble starter on the car take half bottom of the starter off than take out bottom bolt.
When I reinstalled it I never bother putting bolt back in. 👍🏻
@@mikimiki195 Wow, sounds like a real pain, if I ever get a job for that I will be sure to video it..
Nice video! Wonder what is the symptoms of a starter that is going out ? Thanks again.
Thanks much, there are a few, the most common is just a click from the starter when you turn the key to try to start the engine, it can take a few try's before it turns over, you can turn the key and it does nothing until after a few try's, also you can hear a grinding sound sometimes when you turn the key, these are a few of the most common symptoms of a starter going bad...
@@thediyyardie7192 in my case the GL starts every time just long crank sometimes. Like cranking for 5 rotations. Thanks.
@@tedlu008 there are a few things that can cause that also, worn spark plugs, a low fuel pressure problem, or an issue with the cold start system..
Very detailed information. Thank you
You're welcome Hashim, thanks for the compliment on my video...
Wonder if you have any video on diagnosis and replacement of front control arms or stabilizer bar links for 2007 Gl450? Thanks again.
No Ted I don't sorry, I've been doing this work for over 30 years, but recently started with the recording and UA-cam, my channel would have been well established if I had started in the early days of UA-cam, but I'm going to do my best from this point..
@@thediyyardie7192 wow cannot wait to see more of your videos working on the GL450.
Maybe need to put some locktite on the bolts
a little won't hurt..
How long a job is that?
two to three hours tops, if you're mechanically inclined and using the correct tools..
Thank you
@@jerrykay1137 you're welcome
I see starters on amazon from 100 to 500 dollars.
How can they be the same.
I have a 2011 450 gl
160000 miles.
I have 2011 450 gl 160k miles.
I see starters from amazon auto barn auto zone oreilly napa. From 100 to 500 dollars.
Guess there is not a torque value required for the two bolts since there is no room for a torque wrench.
I'm sure there is one, but I use my own judgement..
@@thediyyardie7192 my mobile mechanic said 45 ft lb and was able to torque to that value using a torque wrench. Took him 1 hour today replacing it on my 2007 GL450. The new starter revs much faster -60% increase in rev rpm and the GL now starts up quickly. Very glad the starter got replaced.
@@tedlu008 good to hear that, you're all set then..
@@thediyyardie7192 thanks a lot for your video. So that I got an idea about the steps needed in this job. I might be able to get it done maybe in 3 hours of time. But it’s really convenient and stress free to watch it done :)
@@tedlu008 You're quite welcome, that's the whole idea behind my channel..
Great job! Yardie, big up yuself!
