  • The under the seat battery likely covers both Mercedes Benz ML & GL; from 2007 to 2020. Vehicle shown is a 2008 Mercedes Benz GL450.
Are the lights, wipers, rear hatch, signals going randomly and a little crazy. It's probably your battery. Hope this helps someone.

I have a 2010 GL 450 and I’m finishing my second aux battery replacement. The first was 3 years ago and it was an incredible pain because I didn’t think the tab holding the battery in was designed to bend, so I removed the cage, which took me 4 hours to remove and replace because the nuts are almost impossible to replace. DO NOT unscrew them. Just bend down the tab and pull the battery out. Also, don’t pay Benz $35+, go to Batteries and Bulbs and get a Duracell AGM for $14.95. My symptom has been door lock solenoids randomly clicking and/or refusing to lock automatically. My first replacement battery died because the car was garaged for a year and a half due to a bent drive shaft I couldn’t afford to replace. The battery went completely flat,

This was helpful in replacing the aux battery causing my rear breaktail light and license plate light from staying on. My tip is use good gloves when doing this if you don’t like getting cuts....btw, I took the main battery to Autozone and they tested it “good” but needing a little charge. I had a trickle charger on for a few days but could not fully charge so I think the aux battery was the problem that was draining the main battery.

Two things (from a technician): 1) The positive terminal ALWAYS goes on first when changing any car battery. Ground terminal is first off, last on. Once the ground is off, the positive terminal can touch anything, without consequence. 2) You forgot to plug the vent hole on the positive side of the main battery. If you look again at the video, you'll see there is a small red plug attached to the corner of the red safety covering that was on the positive terminal of the battery when you purchased it. You are supposed to break that little plug off and insert it into the vent hole on the other side of the battery. The battery has vent holes on both sides for use in other applications. Failing to use that plug can result in battery gases escaping into the battery compartment rather than being vented outside the vehicle.

I believe as the transmission shifters are electronic in these vehicles, the aux battery allows for you to shift the transmission into neutral if your main battery is totally dead. It may do other things but that is what I've heard of.

How did the mini Duracell hold up? I really try to stick to Genuine/OE but they have both of the ones you used here in town. I saw someone on Amazon say they bought an aftermarket auxiliary battery and did not have good luck. They did not say if it was a Duracel. I actually kinda like the idea of having a Duracel in my GL hahaha. Kinda cool. I do not think the big battery is available as a Mercedes Genuine part anymore anyways. Hoping you see this comment. If anyone else used the Duracel and sees this lemme know! Thanks for the video I think I am going to try and do this myself. I even have the trim tools already haha.

      - Hi, not exactly sure what you are asking. It's a Mercedes; my recommendation would be to not "hook up" anything (amp power cable) or otherwise; to the AUX battery. Simply replace it and leave it. The reason is that, it is used to put your car in Neutral if your main battery dies and you need to tow the car.

It’s hard to know for sure unless you test the aux battery. However if it is more than five years old - it’s due so replace it. Not sure about the connection to the latch as I never had a problem with that. Have you checked on the Mercedes forums? if not I would ask there if anyone has experienced the same problem.

If you're handy or have a mechanic friend it's not too bad. However, you will likely need suspension work (front & rear air shocks). if you replace; always use Arnott brand; they are better then OEM. Also, the cam shaft magnets go out all the time (I've got a video on my channel where I'm replacing one); only a $30 part online; but gets annoying unless you're able to replace yourself. Finally, the power steering pump is a little undersized so that fails around 80k miles. Look for one with documented maintenance records. Also, keep in mind that its a Mercedes luxury SUV; so things like Tires, Batteries, Oil Changes all cost an arm and leg. Especially, the tires...I think we paid north of $1200.

Emrah Güngör - bad primary battery causes many “weird” electronic behavior. My rear wiper wouldn’t stop or my hatch wouldn’t latch or my dash was saying all sorts of lights were bad when they weren’t. Aux battery is simply to shift to neutral in the instance the main battery is dead and you need to tow the car. If main battery is more than 3 yrs old, I’d replace it with an AGM one, and I’d replace the AUX battery at the same time. If not, I’d pay $125 to have the car diagnosed at a dealer so you don’t waste money throwing parts at it.

      Wise Adviser
Hi there. Thank you for your efforts in making this layman tutorial. I do applaud your wittiness and tenacity. However, to the contrary; WE NEVER CONNECT THE NEGATIVE CABLE TO THE BATTERY FIRST. By Connecting the negative cable first and then connecting the positive cable last, can cause minor inexpensive damages, such as a "blown fuse" or major expensive damages, such as a "blown control module". As a "principle of wallet/pocket book" when removing battery cables: ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE CABLE FIRST, THEN DISCONNECT THE POSITIVE CABLE LAST. When reinstalling cables: ALWAYS CONNECT AND TIGHTEN DOWN THE POSITIVE CABLE FIRST, THEN CONNECT THE NEGATIVE CABLE LAST. There's no contempt on my part [ONLY ENCOURAGEMENT]. Again thank you and looking forward to seeing MORE VIDEOS.

You waste too much time helping to locate the battery. Do another separate video talking about battery quality
