I enjoyed this conversation very much. THANK YOU! What you ended up sharing is wise and healthy guidelines for living one's life anywhere - on the road, at home, on vacation, etc. I loved the idea of doing a deep dive into one album (using headphones for privacy as well as fidelity) while one is on the road. I also appreciated the reminder of how vital it is to chat with fans afterwards, even if one is sweaty and/or an introvert and/or obsessing about the things one could have done better during one's performance. And it's great to hear that folks in Europe take such good care of visiting performers! The only thing I was surprised you didn't talk about is the environmental impact of touring and how one one might choices that are more rather than less sustainable (given that almost the entire state of California is under rain/storm/flood/mudslide warnings today due to fossil-fuel-driven climate change...)

Thank you for reminding me that I have to start touring. Maybe I'm a psychopath but I feel better on the road. If nobody minds, I will share some thoughts. I haven't toured with my original project. But I worked two times on a travelling boat with a music-theatrical group. One of those were for 6 months. And I was on the road often with musical project and other issues. and once I participated in an archeological expedition and lived in a forest for 2 months.
    1. You forgot to mention to have a pack of fuses for your synth.😀 they are small. And Always have a small screwdriver kit. you never know what you'll need to repair or take apart. even if you don't repair your gear yourself. sometimes a mild issue could happen, for example something small fell into ventilation gap. and it can damage the whole audio chain when it short-circuited. Or simply to changed a hard drive in your laptop.
    2. in terms of medicinal items. I always have pills like immune-boosters, not antibiotics. I don't pop them like PEZ, but sometimes you have to talk with a person ( a fan) and you see the person is 100% has a flu. and it's not a mild issue. Don't be a hero, you're not doing anyone a favor by ignoring at least obvious possibilities to get sick and eventually going under temperature. It can jeopardies the whole tour when crew members start getting sick one by one.
    3. Never get too excited in the beginning of a tour, especially if it's your first one. We are prone to think that positive is always good. It's not. It could be damaging when you experiencing as i call it positive withdrawal. It's multiplied in confined spaces. Especially if you're talking with a person who has gone through the same thing for several times. They don't share your excitement. And it's hard to resist. When I worked on a boat with a musical theatrical group, that first month it's always like this "oh, did you see this guy in the audience?" "oh, did you see how they react" . And by the 4th month I was the same ambivalent person and was getting tired when a new artist is very excited, I was wanted to get rest before the next exit.
    4. another advice. you mentioned exercises. sometimes you don't have space or a gym. You don't need space to move. Just don't sit all the time. I found it for myself when started teaching online at home. at first you got to get used to stand, but it goes away, so one might consider preparing themselves for a tour by starting walking more and sit less when working.
    5. If you 're going to a different climate prepare yourself. If you're going north, start taking cold showers, if you are a north person like me maybe consider trying sauna of course taking advice with your doctor beforehand. It's not a joke. I once got a heatstroke and again it can jeopardize your whole tour.
    6. Oh and it's so easy to get lost in celebration, especially if you were through rural area and small cities for long time and now you have a gig in a big cities. And everybody can handle the emotional rabbit hole differently, but moneywise it's a common issue. Partying could suck out your funds that you planned for the tour. By the way, those gas stations always have big prices. and it's so boring driving you always craving for something at the gas station. So, better invest in a cooler and stuff it regularly at Walmarts and whatnots.
    7. Before going on tour watch the show Roadies to get inspired. I'm surprised how people don't know about it. It was created by Cameron Crowe. and while on tour - of course listen to CDBaby podcast.

Love this podcast. Thank you Cristina and Rachel! There are so many Ted Talks about the importance of sleep. I remember watching a study stating the tired brain craves caffeine and sugar. When we go into R.E.M. sleep, toxins are flushed out of our system; otherwise those toxins build up in the brain. One thing that helps me with expressing my frustrations is recording those thoughts into an audio. Often, I'd delete the audio after playing it back. It's really fun to do it into a mic with headphones and cool effects. On my motif, I found my Morgan Freeman setting 🙃 The most frustrating thing for myself as a solely independent artist is tripping over my ego, lol. Confidence often is misunderstood, as well. Anyhow, thanks again. Your wrap-up about kindness was fantastic and is an important reminder. Will listen to this podcast again.

@@cdbabyvideo That's a great instrument. I'm writing on an xf8. it is actually my first and only pro keyboard. Had been playing on an old-school Casio since the late 80s. After picking it up, next thing you know, I couldn't stop writing music. That's why you guys still have an entire album paid for under my account. Had little experience with professional mixing and all that jazz. That keyboard brought my passion to create music back to life. Never released those tunes, though. Oh, wait: I released one single just to see how easy it was to publish through CDBaby. The song wasn't good but it was a fun experience. My plan this year is to finally release a debut LP. Gotta get a few singles out first, though.
