They used to (and still do for some of their products) buy cheaper alternatives from small distilleries and carefully selected wich ones to use and how. They've been criticized due to the inconsistency and the highest quality version they offered at a time (blue label) was considered to be an overpriced inflated alternative compared to other brands.

Smirnoff history is kind of sad. The original russian creator had to set up shop in europe due to the Russian government's pursuit of private businesses at the time. He agreed to partner up with a younger businessman from Jewish descend that convinced him to take the brand to north America. Once Smirnoff landed in the states the permits and paperwork was done under his partner's name acknowledging him as the owner and creator leaving the original owner in the dark with no chance of fighting back. Quality went down but branding took over. I believe there's a trial case against the company's owner started by the descendants of the original owner that's still on going today. It's kind of sad.

I am an ex smoker, though I still smoke when drinking. I used to prefer normal marlboro, yellow kings, or white prince.
but since I just smoke when drinking now I buy the cheapest one. When drunk it doesnt matter much for me, as long as it is not menthol.
