There is a couple of us at work that have C5 Corvette's. We call it the stupid button. One can do some stupid stuff when the button is pushed. I rarely turn mine off for fear of doing something stupid. It is defiantly a game changer on my 98' M6. Easily fry's the tires with TC off. Be prepared. Another great video Lyle!
I just bought a C6 and own a C3 I learned more here in a few days than I ever could on my own Thank you Lyle your info is literally a life changing experience!!
The Competitive mode has saved my bacon many times in my C6 Z06. I love it and would never turn that off. The problem with burnouts is these cars will get traction and when they do they will launch wherever they want.
Thank you so much Lyle. I am picking up a 2008 Corvette convertible today you really taught me what years to look for. I wanted a C6 and I waited two years for the price to come down. Two years ago this car was $32,000. I waited and paid 21,000 yesterday. The car has 69,000 miles on it and the Corvette mechanic I brought it to give it two thumbs up, the dealership had to fix a couple of items and now it is ready. Lyle, you are awesome. Thank you so much again.
The C5 does turn everything off. If you have AH, pushing the button once turns TC and AH off. Go do doughnuts. If you hold it for competitive driving mode, it just turns off TC, so you can do burnouts, but if you get sideways the AH kicks in.
I listened to Lyle say this out loud well before I found my '04 but didn't understand exactly what it meant. After a year and a half, I can say for sure that this "magic button" does indeed reveal my Vette's other "personality" and has reminded me on many occasions that is to be respected 🤫
I love the magic button on my C6, and I use it all the time when the roads are dry, and when it's not too cold for the tires to maintain sufficient grip. My 5th Gen Camaro SS has a magic button as well, and the same rules apply.
Great info Have an 04 convertible. Didn't know this existed till 3 years ago. Probably saved my life a few times😂 Replacement visors are awesome, Lyle!
My 2000 has active handling, yet I've had the thing fishtail really nasty a couple of times. Typically a combo of little tread remaining and a heavy foot. I countersteered it no problem but wondered why the babysitters didn't come to my rescue. Perhaps they determined "he's got this" and just sat around watching the show. 😂
Always great advice attached to great information. Knowing what to expect when the magic button is pushed before you push it is very important. Your knowledge and advice is always very well respected.
Lyle, Lionel here in central California. That's good stuff. I'm basically a Harley rider and been a Corvette owner for about 50 years. About 4 years ago I got a 06 C6. Absolutely love the car. I ride my Harley year round and so when I have to drive I want something that is fun, as well as enjoyable. I knew about the magic button, so I thought. Didn't realize it had more magic. I read my owners manual as I do for all my vehicles, but must of missed the magic section. I like the use of props, nice. Your must see for Vette owners. Thanks for info.
I was looking at a C6 that the owner decided he preferred a Z06 for extra performance. I asked him if he ever activated the magic button. He said he never heard of it. I said try it out and then let me know if you still want to sell and get a Z06. Never heard back from him. Guess he decided his C6 was now fast enough.
Lyle, I am so glad I found your company. I have done a lot of business with West Coast Corvette in California and I am glad to find your company. I have a 2000 C5 Corvette 5.7 LS1 with 34,000 miles on it. I did sign up for your VIP Membership but it won't let me in. I will try tomorrow and see. I live in Honolulu Hawaii and Corvette parts out here is hit and miss most of the time. Even the Dealerships at times don't have parts and to SPECIAL Order it will cost you. We will be doing business. Thanks again for what you do. Mahalo and Aloha Joe V. Cruz
Hi Joe! The VIP program has been set aside as I don't have the time to make two sets of videos--one for everyone and one for paying members. I prefer at this point to just do my best for everyone and rely on them to return the favor by doing business with us. I look forward to helping you! Lyle

Love your show, very informative, I think because of your show I believe I now know what is causing my slight noise, harmonic balanceer, yup , dam. Beau
That moment where you say screw it and put your foot through the floor, because every VW Golf and soccer mom SUV wants to race you off the line - but you end up looking like a chump because you forgot to turn off that goddamn babysitter mode and suddenly it feels like you're towing a boat! Yeah... I don't know what that's like at all. 😂
I have a 2002 C5 Z06. Start the car and traction control and active handling are on. Hold button for 5 seconds and Competitive driving mode turns on, which leaves active handling on, but turns off traction control. In other words, you can do a burnout and spin as much tire as you want, but if you start to go sideways active handling kicks in and tries to save you. So if you want to have some fun but with a little saftey net behind you, competitive driving mode it is. Push the Button once.... traction control and active handling are turned off. This mode allows you to do doughnuts or slide around however you please. The only thing saving you is your right foot.
Great video I always tell my friends about your channel 👍 more C5 videos hell yea . Would love to get one about the common leaks on the C5 and how to fix them.
His C5 info on traction control is almost correct. If your car was equipped with active handling, pushing the button once turns TC and AH off. Holding it for competitive driving mode leaves AH on and turns TC off.
@@HusseinWN I have a C5 and its complete dry. There is no Leak. Maybe the Pre Owner of the Car fixed it, i dont know. But i have it since 4,5 years, and it dont Leak.
I have a 2000 6spd manual and recently replaced all four original hubs, rotors and brake pads, at 140,000 miles. Still has original clutch. Prior to hub replacement, I had abs light on as one of the wheel sensors was bad. After replacement abs came back, but the magic button doesn't do anything and I'm getting active handling warming up constantly through info center then service active handling warning. Oh btw, my car was also equipped with magnetic ride control. When I try switching between sport, touring, etc.modes nothing happens. Is it possible something is wrong with the control panel/magic button, wiring, switches, or a fuse?
Even my V wagon likes the magic button mode... no lift upshifts activated, stiffer feeling steering, by far GM's best feature...the magnetic shocks...they flex-up and keep everything flat cornering hard... and yeah it toovwill run a lit tle harder unleashed!! 🥰💕
Just an extra information I picked up from the owner's manual on a 2006 Corvette. If your TPMS light is on or your TPMS system is malfunctional then all you could do is go into traction control off and that's about it.
Its funny, I had the nanny in my C5 try to kill me on a wet road when I just pulling into traffic once (wet road). The car just fell on its face and I was hoping no one plowed into me... several years later after adding a supercharger the nanny's level of intervention seemed to be much lighter. It would Engage but only in a limited manner... I left the control "ON" and the car would spin going into 2nd and the nanny only intervened slightly. I asked the shop if they "tuned" or changed the traction/active handing and was told NO. It was certainly different then when the car was stock. As a reference, I never applied WOT on wet roads and even cold temps (below 50 degrees limited traction SIGNIFICANTLY and could get you into something unexpected. Here is a 0-60 pull that will show the traction control engaging on the 1-2 upshift (RPM A4 w/3.42) with the nanny fully engaged. The supercharger was a Vortech V3 SI @ 9 lbs... A&A Corvettes Kit. It was bullet proof... $,$$$ well spent if you want to add 150+ Wheel HP (472WHP/442TQ) on stock motor without headers and stock internals (except valve springs & injectors). 0-60 pull with nanny active on 1-2 upshift... ua-cam.com/video/vmAYGxwxqcw/v-deo.html
Greetings Lyle love the magic button but on my C5 2000 I also next to the magic button have a selector switch for different driving modes which you have never talked about in conjunction with the button, maybe you could explain to others how this setup works as well , thanks as always great stuff fyi im talking about the touring, sport , and performance switch thanks again
Those would be for your active suspension. Touring is soft, sport is moderate, performance will be as stiff in a corner as the magnetic fluid will allow
Hi Lyle, thank you for all the wonderful information that you put on your channel. I have two Corvettes, a 2019 Z06, and just purchased a 2011 Grand Sport with 5K original miles. Is there a supercharger that I can put on the 2011 that won't force me to change the original hood on the car? Again, thank you, I'll be looking for your response. Sincerely, RJF
I believe that the ProCharger system fits under the stock hood without issue. I would contact them directly to confirm this, but I have been surprised several times when finding that system on a completely stock-looking car. Lyle
You should do a video about c5 top replacements, now that the parts are all gone, even if you just broke the glass part, the frame OEM pieces are the only way it seals properly. Flying roof club is one thing, but if you improperly latch your top, you might bend your very impossible to replace frame pieces and a "new" top might not fix it unless it was really from GM NOS prior to the end of production of parts.
Hey Lyle , m'y 97 c5 start to randomly Says traction control enable something like That ... around 50mph and i get the feeling That the Rear brake are apply until i press the tcs Burton .. may IT can be a bad speed sensor?
As a GS owner, I have never even touched the magic button because I do not think it is safe to even take this car to 7/10 of what it is capable of. It’s funny you even said that because I say it all the time. I REALLY want to experience this thing on a track this summer to open it up more and see what I am capable of taking this to, which I am sure I will never see what the cars limits are.

If you guys saw the timing retard tables of the C4 in traction control, you would shake your heads. It's bad. I not only zeroed out the timing table but also zeroed out the other tables associated. Even with the traction control programmed off in the Jet DST, the computer still wants to activate it so I had to zero everything out. And this is first generation traction control. I can only imagine what the other generations do...
Hey Lyle what happens when you push the button and nothing comes up on the DIC? I have no active codes. I have an 07 base automatic. Just bought the car and cant figure it out. Fuse maybe? Car runs and shifts fine
I'm more conservative than competitive, but I love taking my 2001 C5 on twisty roads like the Tail Of The Dragon and the Arizona Sidewinder. However, I've had problems with the heart of Active Handling - the EBCM. I've had to replace it last year, with a "good used" salvaged EBCM from the best Corvette shop in the Mid-Atlantic area -- but do you know anyone who can rebuild that EBCM if it ever goes belly-up?
Good info, though a little theoretical. May be a good to show the difference with a car in real on a parking spot or safe, deserted, road? Have the 2000 car since 4 years, did one track day, kept all on and it was challenging enough for my ability. My advice, take track driving education and have fun safely. Those machines can bite.
I would love to have that kind of budget and time! Doing a physical demonstration as you suggest would be awesome! Unfortunately, our shop is so busy that I cannot take a day away from work to film on location with multiple cameras and a crew. I appreciate your feedback and will do my best to expand the channel as income and time allow. Lyle :)
I've been having an issue with my 2004. at times my left front brake will grab and pull the car left, very scary! If I turn off traction control it will not do this. I get a C1282 code. Does this mean my yaw s ensor is bad or could it be another problem? Hate to just start changing stuff
If you're troubleshooting problems you can unplug the steering wheel position sensor to disable Active Handling completely. Unplugging a wheel speed position sensor will disable Anti-Lock Brakes.
Have you seen any new owners manuals? They look like pop up books with the way the give you information. They don't even tell you how to do vehicle services anymore, just to bring it to a mechanic.... so sad
Talk to car enthusiast groups near you to find out if there are any lapping days at a race track near you. They have instructors that can help you get the most out of you and your car.
I have an 03. I see only 3 different messages: Trac/Act Hndlg On (default), Trac/Act Hndlg Off (pushing button once) and Competitive Driving (holding button 6-10 seconds). You say that pushing the button once Only turns off Traction Control, but leaves Active Handling in Full mode, which seems safer for burnouts. Then I think you are saying that Competitive mode is almost like Tr/Ah Off, except that Ah is in a Weaker mode? You did say that in a C5 the AH is always on. Also, there is no way to turn off ABS, is that correct?
On is "on for both". One press of the button is Off for both. Hold the button for Competitive mode which is Traction off and active handling subdued, but still there if you get too out of shape. There is no way to turn off ABS. Lyle :)
When I hit the button once on my C5 Z06 the DIC reports "traction control/active handling off", are you saying that active handling is neither reduced or turned off when it is in "traction control/active handling off" mode?
On the C5, if you just hit the button once it turns TC and AH off completely. Competitive Driving Mode turns off TC and gives you a modified version of AH. Lyle
@@lyleaulwurm9486 That's what the DIC indicates, Thanks. With 600 rwhp via a Procharger, the TC activates pretty frequently in the lower gears, but it still allows a little throttle induced oversteer. Fun stuff.
I believe you are wrong in regards to c5 function of the button, on my 2002 c5, one push of the button will turn off TC and AH, although if i hold it down for 5 seconds it will turn off TC but AH will be on.
When I just hit the button, my 03 C5 will burn out, and go sideways almost instantly. If I go competitive driving mode, it burns out and stays in a straight line…mostly. I’m also fairly sure he misspoke. With TC off, it feels like all systems are down. In competitive driving mode, it feels like traction control is gone, but the car stays in “please don’t crash me” mode with active handling keeping the car pointed the right way.
Hi Lyle, what would you say is a good price range for a clutch/ rear main job? I did it myself on jackstands back in October but unfortunately I installed the rear main I bought from you guys incorrectly and it’s leaking just a little.
A 'friend of mine' had the clutch (and all associated parts) and rear main seal replaced earlier this year at GM dealership for 5k. But, I wouldn't say it was a 'good' price.
Hi Lyle I have 2001 and sometimes service active handling and traction control pops up on my dash.i never use the magic button is this a serious problem that needs attention .
Hi Lyle i had a bunch of codes come up BO432 B2587 B2592 B2593 B2809 also have alot more is there a specific one maybe this will be easier, sorry about this, appreciate your help, thanks
Can confirm if you hit the button once, all is off. It says it on the screen and also lets you spin out/spin tires. No help whatsoever... ask me how i know 😂
About a week after I got my 2000 frc, service ABS and traction control appeared on my dash and has been on ever since. I've done a reset and cleared codes, yet it still appears on dash. How can I make this go away?
I can put my 2000 in competition mode and it shows "competition mode" on the dash, but it still acts like it is on. Case in point, when I put the pedal to the medal or try to do a brake stand from a dead stop it bogs down like the throttle is being cut out and/or timing is being retarded. No codes in the computer though.
Im mean less helps. I wouldn't say there is a sweet spot as they are pretty reliable. Its more about price. If you could find one under 80k miles thats not bad.
Sounds like the old cars we drove back in 60s and 70s that advertedly ended up wrecked in the ditch. We had to actually drive the horsepower down the road. No way would I wish to go back in time and drive like that again.😮👎

That is odd...I have no idea why that is happening.
Brandon at ABSfixer.com can repair most of the codes on the Later C5 and C6 EBCM modules. Lyle :)
Does this mean my yaw s
ensor is bad or could it be another problem? Hate to just start changing stuff
Was wondering why my 99 didn't have competition mode. Thought something was wrong. Do you know the build code # in the dash?
Just curious, can all the magic button features be removed on a c5 zo6. Mine has issues
If you're troubleshooting problems you can unplug the steering wheel position sensor to disable Active Handling completely. Unplugging a wheel speed position sensor will disable Anti-Lock Brakes.
Does no one read the owners manual anymore?
Probably not
I do just to change a fuse .
Love from Mexico 🇲🇽.
I guess not
Have you seen any new owners manuals?
Lyle :)
My Button appears non functional. The screen says "Service Traction System" and "Service Active Handling System". I am located in Texas.
Same. 02 here.
Thats what i was thinking all the Time.
But this Man is a Corvette Expert. Maybe he is right.

Okay, thanks
I love my 79 c3, my 01 z06 not so sure
DO you know what code is being set? You can access them through your instrument cluster. Lyle
@@lyleaulwurm9486
Hi Lyle i had a bunch of codes come up BO432 B2587 B2592 B2593 B2809 also have alot more is there a specific one maybe this will be easier, sorry about this, appreciate your help, thanks
Ran a 13.5 until… I HIT THE MAGIC BUTTON
Can confirm if you hit the button once, all is off. It says it on the screen and also lets you spin out/spin tires. No help whatsoever... ask me how i know 😂
About a week after I got my 2000 frc, service ABS and traction control appeared on my dash and has been on ever since. I've done a reset and cleared codes, yet it still appears on dash. How can I make this go away?
What code(s) are you getting?
@@lyleaulwurm9486 28-TCS C 1243 H , 40-BCM B2578 H , BO-RFA U1096 H / U1064 H /U1016 H .
When I turn on the magic button and loose traction all of my ebcm lights turn on until I reset the codes 🙃
What is the sweet spot on mileage on a C5 Z06 To buy?
Im mean less helps. I wouldn't say there is a sweet spot as they are pretty reliable. Its more about price. If you could find one under 80k miles thats not bad.
Excellent, going to lose some rubber this weekend in a local abandoned parking lot, maybe finally "drift?"!
How do I know I have that I have the button it it a Option I have a base c 6 20 13 that's it have that or is that an option
Its standard. In a 2013 you definatley have it.
My 05 base c6 only let's me "turn off traction control" but no matter how long I hold or press it won't say anything else. What do?
The Car have to stand still. It dont work when the Car is Driving.
@kallo182 it still wont changes
I press and hold for about 10 seconds
Did not know that C5's 2001 and up had active handling
Why did it take 5 years of ownership for me to figure this out last summer after losing a couple street races?
and I thought only my gf had a magic button....😁
Aka the burnout button
Do you need to do that every time you start the car or does it stay off??
The system defaults to the "all On" setting every time you start the car.
I have Corvette. I am RaceCar driver. (sigh)
Guess you don't own 1. 🤣
Sounds like the old cars we drove back in 60s and 70s that advertedly ended up wrecked in the ditch. We had to actually drive the horsepower down the road. No way would I wish to go back in time and drive like that again.😮👎
Damn I would. It was a blast . But true, some guys died.
Electronics suck
Crashed my 09 ls3. Be careful turning that off. Turned into an animal lost it on an on ramp
Does the function of the magic button change if you have a tune or any mods?
