Lyle, this is one of your best how to videos I've seen. Corvette owners for the most part, aren't rich with 3 vacation homes and a million-dollar bank account. Thanks!!
Lyle, being a Corvette enthusiast since I was in grade school being able to help work on my uncles 69 stingray your channel is probably one of the most informative , interesting, and down to earth channels on UA-cam!! Keep up the good work! I wish your shop was in central WISCONSIN!!!
I don't even own a C5 or C6 Corvette but think I'll sleep better tonight knowing this in case I ever do buy one! Great information and what a great price to avoid all that extra work if you aren't up to speed on this. Thanks for sharing and saving a lot of headaches.
Holy smokes! I ran across this video by accident but I’m glad I did. I took my C6 in for a diagnosis last week and the mechanic said it was my rear main seal. If I had the same leak after $3700 to replace the seal and it was the plate all along?? I would look for the nearest bridge and jump! Brother, I think you just made my day, my month and my year!!
I got a 200,000 mi 04 C5 that had a grinding clutch. It's not even worn out. It's been replaced before apparently because it has the upgraded rear main seal plate. Wish I could send you photos. Your channel is awesome man bravo
I had a 2003 C5 Greenwood Le Manns Coupe. LOVED that car it had 175;000+ Miles and I just got tired of the oil LEAK! Dang wished I would have see this video!!!!
Great video, I ordered mine. Received it with scratches all over the mating surface from shipping I presume. I’m trying to smooth them out with 2000 grit and polish, hope it doesn’t leak. A single piece of cardboard between the gasket and flange in the shipping package could prevent this!
My stock 2003 C5 automatic is starting to leak a lot from the back of the engine. It has just over 150,000 miles. While sitting at a light, the oil drips on the exhaust and that smell is pulled into the HVAC intake vent. Very annoying. Your video clearly explains what is probably going on with my C5.
I JUST had all the HVAC actuators replaced...along, as per your suggestion, with the heater & evaporator cores. When the clutch needs replacement, I will deff get that plate. And I just watched your other video on the C6 FP relay carbonization contact issue. The shop I'm using has had the car for 3 weeks now trying to make it fail. Last Friday, I saw and sent the advisor your video on it. Crossing fingers and toes on this one....
That was a great, and very informative video. I am looking at purchasing a C-5 in the near future, and this will come in extremely handy. Thanks for putting out the content, and keep it coming.
It appears that there is a way to tell the difference between the old and new rear main plates from the outside. If you look at the new plate, two of the mounting holes on the right side are milled out into a V pattern. Those same holes in the old plate just have circular counterbores. With this in mind, you can determine whether you have the old or new plate without removing it from the engine.
Outstanding info! I was just under my 2007 z06 and saw wet on the front of the transmission so I’m getting it to shop for closer inspection. Of course Track Day is rapidly approaching! I’ll be mentioning your product to my guy, thanks!
Thanks for the good advice, Lyle. I did the harmonic balancer last weekend and replaced the front seal while there. Not as bad as I expected with a lift and a little help. Appreciate your channel.
Lyle I have a 1998 C5. A shop told me I have a fine line crack in my oil pan. But after seeing this, I'm not so sure 🤔 Thanks again Lyle for all the awesome content 👍
Thank you, Lyle very informative. I probably wouldn’t have paid any attention to the main seal if you hadn’t mentioned it. Although mine doesn’t leak yet since I have the torque tube out I went ahead and replaced it anyway. Thanks.
GREAT info! I just bought the kit from you as well. Thanks for linking directly to it! I know at some point I'll have the TT rebuilt on my 06, so this will sit on the shelf till then.
Absolutely great content. Safe to assume same issue with 5th Gen Camaro SS LS3/6M? Is there any means of telling which units are more likely to have the problem (years, range of VINs), or just wait for a leak to crop up?
Great information. Ironically, I have been chasing an oil leak in a GMC Yukon Denali in the oil pan area. Droped pan and replaced gasket...twice.....Changed oil filter three times (Leak appears to be in that area). Finally I thought that maybe the pan itself was warped/cracked? There was an odd bolt and may have cracked the top end as you mentioned, but just going to replace the whole pan with brand new GMC pan. Ill inspect for uneven areas as you mentioned prior to install. Thanks for the information Lyle.
Thanks for the great, informative video Lyle. The shop that I go to for L-O-F's etc kept telling me I had a very minute leak in the rear seal. Stupid me and my OG ways thinking that it had to do with the rear end and transaxle. I never could find that so-called minute dribble of a leak and the ground sure has heck never showed any leakage under the car. I have a 2000 C5 with the Z51 package 6 spd. after having a 1970, 73, 87 and 95 Corvettes. Since I bought the 70 in 1972 and being used to the old way of transmission setups being with bell housing at the rear of the engine and find that is not true of the C5 and newer Vettes. Doh (Homer Simpson style) and my knowledge is growing. Thanks for all the great videos and how they help the rest of us out.
Thanks for the info & all the tips & tricks you let us all know about. When I get into my new place I'll be ordering this for sure, just to have on hand when I need it. Take care.....
Thanks for the video. Your videos helped In my budget buying process. In the middle of a transmission upgrade and just bought this kit to fix any future problems . Thanks
WOAH!!! Lyle, you are the BEST!!!! Thank you so much for all of your content. I'm buying my first Corvette in a few months. I'm using your channel to aid me in my purchase. Also, I live in Tampa so if anything goes wrong, I'll be a new customer.
I purchased the seat track repair kit for my C5 from you and that was great, so I think you just talked me into ordering this. I have a new clutch and trans on its way.
Tanks for that information. my C5 develop a leak at the end of last year. We found when I did oil change. If it is the remain seal I'll be ordering your kit. And if it is the seal I will get the rebuild kit for the torque tube also seeing how its got to come out, its got 12500 miles on it .
Thanks for this great informative video! This is the reason I Subscribed to this Channel...GREAT REPAIR INFORMATION plus a little humor now and then. Thanks!
I love your channel and content, having owned both C4, C6 and C7, but van you do a C2 buyer's guide. That's what I'm interested in now, especially with prices going through the roof. Although my interest is in a driver. Thanks and looking forward to your next show.
Anytime I have what appears to be a rear main seal or rear cover gasket, I recommend the whole cover assembly that includes gasket, main seal and bolts. There is not much more parts price difference
Don't forget the barbell in the back too.
Lyle, this is one of your best how to videos I've seen. Corvette owners for the most part, aren't rich with 3 vacation homes and a million-dollar bank account. Thanks!!
Gun owners, for the most part, don't own a Belgium Browning. haha, I love em both too. If you have a good dog you would be three for three !
Lyle, being a Corvette enthusiast since I was in grade school being able to help work on my uncles 69 stingray your channel is probably one of the most informative , interesting, and down to earth channels on UA-cam!! Keep up the good work! I wish your shop was in central WISCONSIN!!!

I don’t even have my c6 yet and you already convinced me to buy a rear main seal plate 😮
didn’t know about this but learning about my corvettes potential problems is why i watch this channel!

Just ordered the rear main seal plate from your website. I’m in California. Wish you were so much closer!
God bless you lyle David Webster

Glad the Friday podcast is back!
Great video I have learned more from your videos on Newer Corvettes from you than anyone thanks
Just replacing a gasket only to find out that it was more than that would blow my gasket! Great info sir.
Just got my kit from you, gonna throw it on when I get the clutch replaced here in the next couple weeks on my 2002 Z06.. Thanks Lyle!
I’m taking notes! I just purchased a 2008 C6 w/47K miles. I love it!!
Great info Lyle! Just sold my 94 C4 and bought a 13 GS. Now I have to get a new memory bank of issues to watch for.
Thanks Allen! ( Welcome back)
your channel is a gold mine, TY!!
Excellent explanation of a design flaw, with a cost effective solution.
Thank you for sharing your experience.
Take care
Lyle is the man! When i had to do my clutch he told me about this. I had never heard this before but he is soooo right.
Lyle, you are a national treasure. Thank you so much for being here for us Corvette owners. I always look forward to your videos. They are amazing!!!
I do not have a C5/6 at the moment but will probably order this knowing that I will again. Haha, great video!

That was a great, and very informative video. I am looking at purchasing a C-5 in the near future, and this will come in extremely handy. Thanks for putting out the content, and keep it coming.
Great video, and $89 is a steal for all you're getting 😊. Will definitely remember this when it comes time to do any of that service to my C5... 😎
I’d feel so much better about driving my C5 if you guys were in Virginia. 😂
Same here in Michigan, but Lyle's videos have saved me literally thousands of dollars
Great to see you back. One of the best vids I’ve seen as a preventative measure. Thanks Lyle!

Thanks again for your impeccable information, and what a bargain $89.99, I will remember this.
Great video Thank you from Montreal Canada
Man good to know Im sure I will be replacing the clutch eventually, this is really good to know!

This info just helped me a lot, my 2013 has the updated plate already installed... Great catch!!!
This comment should be pinned. 👍

Great video. I wish I thought of this a couple of years ago when I pulled the transmission to replace the clutch. The seal was not leaking then… 😞
Perfect timing! I'm building an LS7 for my C5 Z06 and we had some problems with the rear main plate/seal on my built LS6. Thank you and ordered!

Excellent tip and absolutely necessary. Also, always get the billet barbell for the oil control. I recommend Sac City's over MM.
