In California, for example, the kind of non-compete clauses that these people are complaining about are illegal. Buzzfeed is, of course, not a Californian company, so they are subject to different regulations. I think it's perfectly legitimate to say that those sorts of stipulations shouldn't be allowed in contracts in the first place. If someone signed a contract that made them a slave we wouldn't throw up our hands and say "well, they did sign a contract". That's dumb.

I like how they complain about not being able to work on their own videos but it's most likely in their contract that whatever they make, it belongs to Buzzfeed.
Fair, but when you're young an fresh it's hard to understand the impact of that, and how far it reaches when you're blinded by the name and idea of the company you work for.
It's worth pointing out that employee contracts are subject to a litany of regulations specifically intended to prevent abuse by companies through said contracts. In California, for example, the kind of non-compete clauses that these people are complaining about are illegal. Buzzfeed is, of course, not a Californian company, so they are subject to different regulations. I think it's perfectly legitimate to say that those sorts of stipulations shouldn't be allowed in contracts in the first place. If someone signed a contract that made them a slave we wouldn't throw up our hands and say "well, they did sign a contract". That's dumb.
