My dog was abused and abandoned. It took him 3 months to stop flinching when I would pit my hand out to pat him and another 8 months for him to stop doing it with other people he knows. It has been just over a year and he trusts strangers to pat him now. I am so proud.

I just adopted a dog from a family friend, she had to rehome her because her man was as she put it “hates dogs and wasn’t nice about it”…it was a lot more than that. She not only winces but screams at random stuff. Like theres been a few times she thought i was going to kick or hit her which breaks my heart. She is my dream dog, well behaved and such a cuddly sweetheart. Ive beenhaving a hard time trying not to imagine what the hell he did to her. She isnt afraid of me as much but her ptsd comes up heavy with my husband. She loves him and goes to him but gets triggered way easier. As of now we are just taking it day by day and proving to show that we wont hurt her, we wont give up on her ever💗

My last pitty rescue would have bitten my face off if I got that close to him on day one lol Poor guy has a face with Frankenstein sized scars and bite marks all over it. The fur never grew back on the giant scars so he’s crazy looking to start with. He was days from being put down when we saw this sad story on Facebook. A family had sponsored him in their daughters memory who used to be involved with rescuing dogs. Then the shelter turned around and said even though they paid for his care, he had bitten too many employees and they were afraid to let him out of his cage. Then they said he was “un-adoptable” so they had to put him down. I love a good challenge and have worked with abused dogs in the past so after a week long legal battle, I had him transferred to a no kill shelter who then agreed to let me foster him.
He was so messed up, he would come over and sit in front of me on the couch and just intensely stare at me. If I tried to touch him he’d bite. Then he’d place his head under my hand like he wanted to be pet, but if I touched him anywhere but on the top of his head, like pet his back for example, he would snap and try to bite again. He also had massive issues with “resource guarding” and had bitten 3 people at the shelter just for getting to close to his tennis ball. The professional trainer they hired said he’d never be safe around kids or other animals and told me he was a lost cause.
Fast forward 6 weeks and all he wants to do is snuggle, play, get belly rubs, take walks, car rides, he even sleeps upside down with as much of himself on top of me as he can get lol Totally different animal. He’s great with other dogs, great with people I can play tug a war with his tennis ball and he just loves hanging out. Probably the coolest dog I’ve ever had and I’m 40 now so there have been many.
This video brought back a lot of great memories and is spot on. It is all about trust. A lot of things done here I did by accident but they definitely work! I didn’t know teaching him the “down” command was so important but looking back, that was a turning point for him. Anyway, sorry for the long rant. Thanks for posting, great video!

Goood jooob ;) - so you needed a legal battle even though you had experience with dogs ? (I understand that the shelter would not give the dog to a family with kids).

Xyz Same The kids are my wife’s and only here on the weekends. Even still, we had to file an insane amount of paperwork so we could just keep him from being put down. We live in PA, the Shelter was “Act Philly” and it’s took a Shelter all the way in Texas to help us save him. One of the most stressful things in my life but totally worth it. He’s an overgrown lap dog now lol

That was a good job. I have a rescue staffy. This dog is the best I have ever had. He knows what I want even before I ask him. He is obliging, considerate and obedient without being asked.
I remember his squinting and boots scared him. But he is all trusting now.

My dog sometimes winces when I bend down to pet her, but I've never abused or harmed her. Thing is, I'm 6'7 and weigh 440 pounds and my dog is an 11 pound mini-pin. That's the equivalent of a 40 foot tall 9 ton giant leaning over to rub me behind the ear. I'd be a little freaked out too, even if I knew their intention was 100% peaceful. I just give her patience and love.

I suspect my pit-lab mix was abused before I adopted him from the local rescue. He was 6 months old when I got him, and over these past 10 months, he's been trusting more and more. He still sometimes winces away when I feed him breakfast/dinner, which makes me think he was hit for being too excited at mealtimes. He's very food motivated so who knows. He has mastered many commands but we still struggle with the "come here" command (about 50% of the time). I'm still working with him but it upsets me to imagine anyone abusing this beautiful dog. He's actually quite loving, enjoying cuddles and bringing me his toys (and pinecones, pebbles, the occasional dead gecko or garden snake 😳😂). I'll never quite understand why anyone would abuse any animal, especially a dog.

In cases of less severe abuse, lots of crouching, tucking or wagging the tail against the body in appeasement, submissive grinning and fawning.
In more severe physical abuse situations, bearing the teeth, tucking the tail, raising the hackles, snarling, yelping and screeching, snapping and attempting to fight or flight.

1-If your dog was too skinny or had healing wounds when you adopted them, it’s pretty obvious that your dog was neglected in their previous home, but some symptoms are more subtle. Nails that are longer than they should be, fur that doesn’t seem very healthy, walking with an unusual gait, and having places on their body that they don’t like to be touched are all signs that they may have been abused.
2-Does your dog scarf their food down so quickly that you wonder if they’re actually tasting it? Do they refuse to walk away from their bowl in the middle of eating? Do they growl or snap at you or other dogs for coming too close when they’re eating? These may all be signs that your dog grew up in a situation where they didn’t have a reliable source of food. Food aggression can be very dangerous and should be discussed with a trainer or veterinarian immediately.
3-If your dog insists on clinging to your side at all times, even when you need to use the restroom, they may have had an unstable puppyhood. This may be more prevalent in dogs that have been rehomed one or more times. Dogs that are extra clingy may have or may develop severe separation anxiety to the point that they whine, howl, become destructive, or urinate or defecate in the house as soon as you leave. There are a number of methods for dealing with separation anxiety that a trainer can help you with, and a comfort cuddler can help soothe your dog when you must leave the house.

Thank you sm! We have had our dog since he was born in 2017, until we moved a few months ago. We had planned on getting him back, but it was just too hot in Florida for him. We asked our aunt to watch him for a few months, and she agreed. Once we got him back he had a huge gash on his back that was infected, he had fleas, he won’t leave our side, he scarfs down his food, and he’s super clingy to us now; which it wasn’t like that before.

I adopted my last dog from the humane society in my town. He was a pure Labrador retriever and became my best friend. Being someone with several major medical conditions. I needed a dog that would work great with me. When I saw him he was the only one that came up to the gate to see me. I was able to take him to the yard and that was when I knew he was the perfect dog. He didn't care about anything else that was around us but me. I went and got my mom and had her go back with me to see him. That day I adopted him but forgot my ID at my parents house. So I had to wait till the next day to pick him up. He became my very best friend. When I would mow the lawn he would lay down so he could see me. I didn't train him to do that he just did it on his own. I did do the same training that you do but not that one. He knew I had problems and would not want to leave me. I worked at a dog kennel bathing and training dogs. I would take him to work with me. I did find out he was abused by someone who used either water or a water hose. There were times I couldn't take him places like to a doctor's appointment. But he did do good at home. Then one day my mom had to take me to the emergency room and he knew something was wrong and wouldn't stay home. So she brought him with us. Turned out I had kidney stones. He was this way till I had to put him down which hurt a lot. It has been over 5 years since then. I do want a dog but I have not found one that comes up to me yet like he did. People keep telling me that the dog will get used to me over time. I tell them that is not how it works. Both the dog and I will know when it is the perfect match. I will never stop looking.

No solicitation. Now he had the greatest live with me. I love this dog so much ❤️. He has a big cage in the bedroom without doors, so he can choose what he wants. he get also lay on my bed or everywhere he want. He loves to cuddles. He's an Angel. I'm so lucky he trust and respect me. I wish people feels always sucks who abused there dog. I hate this people. You shouldn't have do this. You need respect all animals and mother nature. Because you destroyed every little trust in a dog's life. You're not normal if you do this.

I can tell my dog has been abused prior to me adopting her at a shelter bc she runs away from brooms as if she’s been hit, she’s scared of other dogs and humans, yelling causes her to hide even when though the yelling is usually directed between family members and not at her, and shes not trainable with treats. She’s very picky when it comes to food.

That is a sick mindset. Dogs don’t know any better and have no clue about human norms. It’s no different to not expect an infant to understand much. There’s a fine line between discipline that doesn’t even require punishment and cruelty. You should reconsider your thought process.
