  • Welcome to the PRENATAL VITAMIN video you never knew you needed! Listen I get it - the prenatal market is confusing and overwhelming. Especially if you just found out you're pregnant and you really want to try to do what's best for your health and for your growing baby. In this video I talk about:
    - What nutrients and vitamins should be in a prenatal vitamin?
    - What is choline?
    - What is folic acid?
    - How much folic acid should I take if I am pregnant?
    - What are neural tube defects?
    - What is spina bifida?
    - What is anencephaly?
    - What is the difference between folic acid and a methylated folate?
    - What should my prenatal vitamin include in it?
    - What prenatal vitamins are available at Target?
Now this video might not tell you which prenatal vitamin to take. That's probably something you should decide with the input of your OBGYN or your midwife. But it might give you some information on what types of things to look for, why they are important and that you're aiming for your BEST...no one expects perfection from you :)
Remember if you want a video about folic acid vs methylated folate and the MTHFR gene variant drop a comment below so I can get to work for you! 👇🏻

Are prenatal vitamins truly necessary? Wouldn't a regular blood test confirm the actual vitamins and minerals a pregnant woman needs? Are there any studies showing that not taking these supplements increases the risk of fetus abnomalies and/ or deformities? I am asking all of these questions because I do tend to avoid taking supplements unnecessarily, meaning that if my blood tests show I don't lack a particular substance in my body, I wouldn't dose it up just to be sure it doesn't by chance go down.

If you eat a well balanced diet your provider may very well say to you the extra vitamins and minerals aren’t necessary. But I would say with almost complete certainty that very very few providers would say you don’t need to take folic acid (and some might say ok to a methylated folate too) because the risk of neural tube defects is indeed proven higher with lower levels of folate. And anencephaly, as in the video, is almost always fatal. So by advising you against folic acid they would be taking on some of that responsibility if your child does indeed have a neural tube defect.
In the end of course it’s up to you! And you’re right to ask questions, so you should. Just make sure you’re informed before deciding ♥️

Previous doctor, told me I have mthfr and to ONLY take prenatal with folate. I have a history of RPL she said there’s some studies that the variant can cause miscarriage and my last pregnancy resulted in a placenta abruption at 29 weeks. Currently pregnant and terrified.

I can do a video about it, it’s all very confusing. A very large number of people have this variant and there are lots of large organizations who say you should still take folic acid even with the MTHFR Gene variant. It’s stressful! What I can say is MTHFR gene variants do not cause placental abruptions so if that’s a concern here you can wash it away! In the end if you have a provider you trust you should follow their care guidance as they are ultimately responsible for the health and safety of you and your baby ♥️

Nurse Tina, Could you share any insight on adding Vitamin D drops to your baby’s nutrition during the time they’re breastfeeding? Curious to hear your thoughts on that!

I've been taking NatureMade, so glad to hear it's a good one! I'm currently 37 weeks. I've heard I can keep taking the Prenatal after delivery, rather than switching to a Postnatal. Is that true? What's the difference in Prenatal vs Postnatal vitamins?

Chat with your provider but yes some of them say just carry on on the same one! It’s important to keep up your vitamin and nutrient (and iron) levels post baby ♥️

Nice to see they include some choline! Also need to note they are a methylated folate not folic acid (important for people to know this element). But sadly they might be out of reach for some people financially. Beautiful website ♥️
