Its funny that all of these couch potatos are preaching to a professional hunting guide with decades of experience what hes doing wrong in his neck of the woods. Man keep doing you and if I was you I wouldn't even bother reading the comments...except for mine of course.

right...it's easy to speak from the comfort of home lol. No different than trying to tell combat Infantry troops, do and don'ts lol...or young kids in an American ghetto, urban combat scenario, how they should feel or react to situations lol. Leave these things to people who live this stuff, not type them their theoretical handbooks from a computer chair lol

@Adam Baits I'm not sure what your position on this is, but- it happens. Almost always in the most inopportune times. In his case, it would have meant almost certain death. In either case if you hunt long enough over a period of years and decades, an empty chamber or FTF will happen, handload or not. Your comments are nonetheless, duly noted Capt Obvious......

@Adam Baits trust me. The professional makes mistakes same as the rookie. I've been a cop, a navy sailor, an army soldier, a long distance hiker, yada yada yada. One thing I've learned from my mistakes? Everyone makes 'em. Learn from 'em. And I don't care what the law says. Where I go, my 45 goes. Laws are not to be respected when laws disrespect my right to self preservation. Period

Someone with his experience I'm sure knows what he's doing. I spend lot's of time in Grizzly country, and I have had encounters, one really scary one running into a Grizzly in the dark a 100 ft from camp. It literally roared at a friend and I. Scared the bejesus out of us. But I was also, young and dumb. Cooking fresh caught fish on a camp stove, and not cleaning up like I should have, and in an area with a Grizzly bear warning already put up. I invited that Bear right in on us, and got lucky.
Now a days, I now what I need to do, and I have also learned how to act in bear country, what to do and not do. How to read a beers intentions, and the best way to avoid getting mauled or killed. If your smart, and know your stuff, it really is safer than driving to the grocery store. Bears don't want conflict with human's. They know we are a threat to them. And the occasional mauling that happens, if you break it down, 9 times out of 10, it was the humans fault somewhere along the line.
That said, I still always carry bear spray, just in case. And if I'm hunting in bear country, I use a firearm that will be able to handle a Grizzly, usually carry a 300wm. With the right rounds. Basically because I know that while processing game in the wild, that can be a dangerous time which an attack might occur. But that still hasn't happened.
And this guy has about 20 times the experience I do. So I'm sure his judgement is sound.

    • @lt.sewell2792
      @lt.sewell2792 4 роки тому +2

One thing I've learned from my years as a cop & as a soldier, Murphy's Law is alive & well. 9 times out of 10 a mauling is the fault of the human? So 1 out of 10 it was because the bear wasn't following our rules? I can make a long list of professionals killed by bears, etc. In some professions there's no margin for errors. Cop, soldier, big game hunting, diving, mtn climbing, flying, etc. Save the generalities. Always be prepared.

For those that have commented "Never trust a handload"...I had a box of 25 Fiocci shotgun shells and had two that were duds....it has never happened to me before or since...the point is.... Even factory rounds can be duds

    • @erikszy
      @erikszy 4 роки тому

I reload my own and if done properly they far surpass the abilities of factory loads. The handload that he had misfire probably had a bad primer. You never touch the primer with your hands while reloading.Use pliers to pick them up.The oil from your fingers can foul them.

I had two pistol rounds in a box of 50 that were duds as well, produced by a big name ammunition manufacturer. Other than that I've probably had less than half a dozen bad factory loads out of many tens of thousands fired in my lifetime.
The only issues I've ever had with my own handloads are ones that I could reasonably expect when experimenting with powder charges, primer seating depth or Cartridge OverAll Length (COAL). Most hand loaders are experimenters at heart, and we learn as much from the failures as we do from our successes.

You also need to be aware that Texas has just 7 million less people in it than all of Canada. The U.S. has ten times more than Canada. I'm not afraid of people either, just of needing something to protect myself and family and not having it. Three people were shot dead today within a mile of my home, and it's still not uncommon.
It's not luck to be unprepared. It's being unprepared. I make my own luck.

Ingemar Oskar Ingemar Oskar It’s not an evil circle, unless you mean it’s unfortunate People are forced to protect themselves at all costs. If you are implying when you have people with Guns bad things are going to happen...there are always going to be bad People. Bad People are going to try to take advantage of good People going about their own business. Bad People don’t care about Laws. There are bad People in Canada right now that are armed with Handguns, and I can’t protect myself, in my Home it’s a different Story though as Feet from me is a 9mm and 12ga. The US is the freest Country in the World (if it was functioning like it’s supposed to), and the 2nd protects every other Amendment. The more rights that are ignored and eroded, the worse it is getting. You can’t compare the US to other Countries, to individual States, yes, but as a whole, no. The States that are “respecting” People’s Rights and individual Freedoms are the safest. The States that violate People’s Rights the more than others are, are some of the most dangerous places to live.

    Update #2
Sadly, a storied Hunter and guide, famous on UA-cam for his near death Grizzly encounters...
Was killed and eaten by a large grizzly while filming a video on why it's not necessary to carry a gun at all times while in bear country.
    Ironic laugh out loud joke...
    Or prophetic commentary?
(Either way, I DO enjoy listening to these stories, as I don't get to hunt, and I have the utmost respect for this guy and his abilities, as well as the commitment he takes to help facilitate the experience of hunting for all those he guides, providing them with opportunities to achieve what they could never do on their own. That being said, I'd feel better knowing he carried a last ditch firearm, as the hunters in his charge are kinda counting on him to get this right???
    Thanks for the entertaining stories.,😉👍

As far as the "hand load" incident goes, I have also seen Factory ammo fail in the same fashion. If you hunt and shoot long enough, you will see this happen, it doesn't just happen with "hand loaded" ammunition, so you share no burden of fault there in my opinion. You put your experience out here for us fellow hunters and outdoorsmen to enjoy, and unfortunately, all the critics and judgmental A.H.s pop up like daisies after a warm spring rain..... Try to ignore them if you can, they aren't worth the time or the effort and you will never change the troll from being a troll.

So true. There will always be a few dud rounds in every production run. It's unfortunate, but you're not going to discover them until they fail to go off. Choosing the most reliable brand you can find will reduce the likelihood of this happening when it counts most, but you'll never completely eliminate dud rounds. As long as human beings are involved in the process, human error will never fail to rear its ugly head at some point.

I usually don't carry a handgun either, but I also don't guide in grizzly bear country. But once in September last year my brother was digging Ginseng in the Appalachian mountains of SW Virginia. He said that all day long something was breaking dead limbs and making noise. If he was in a holler, (the drainage) what ever was making the noise would be on the ridge. If he went up hill to the ridge, what ever was making the noise would be down in the holler. That evening as he was digging a four prong, his heard his wife say, "Oh my God ". It was the bear who finally came in on them, in which like Steve said, it just doesn't happen. My brother said he stood up and done all the normal stuff to run the bear off, but it wouldn't scare. He finally stomped his foot at the bear and growled and the bear lowered his head, pinned its ears back, and all the hair standing up on it. Out of all the bears I've run across, I've only had one to do me that way, and I must say it was a very uncomfortable place to be in. This one makes my brothers second time, because we were together on the first one. But anyway, he said that in his mind the bear may have done something bad if it wasn't for the handgun he pulled out and fired in the air.

I love your stories, learn a lot too! Didn't realize horses aren't worried about bears, definitely know mine freak about moose. I was afraid of grizzlies, but the more I learn about bears, I'm more afraid of black bear boars. Your respect for nature is commendable

I'll have to disagree with you on this, tbh. Even if the risk of a fire in a house is small, you always have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and garage. Same with grizz's and stuff. At least carry bear spray.

I live, play and hunt in grizzly country, walk my dogs in it daily. I know personally more than a handful of people who have been attacked including fatalities. I have considerable list of my own bear stories. I respect anyone's choice of how to gear up, especially when those choices are based on experience. That said, why no bear spray? You should be teaching that super basic safety tip as a responsible outdoor pro. That stuff saves lives every year where I live. Don't leave home without it.

bear spray does not stop an angry grizzly. Oh. and you should not be 'walking your dogs in grizzly country' unless they are a trained bear dog that will take a bear away from you.

Thank you for explaining the reason for the lack of a firearm. It cleared up a whole lot for me. I never meant to question your professionalism, and I apologize if I did. I just found it rather unusual for a guide to hand his weapon over to someone else. But you obviously know what you are doing, and I love your accounts of dealing with these great beasts. Ever thought about checking out Admiralty Island? Can't hunt there, but the brown bear there are immense. Cross between a polar and griz. Thanks again, and again, my apologies.

I respect the SHIT out of this guy and love all of his videos and I’m conscious of the fact that he’s one MILLION times more experienced than I’ll ever be. With that being said, when I head into the woods I always carry a side arm. Not because I always expect to need it, I agree that the odds are one million to one. I carry my sidearm because if I do happen to beat those odds, I wanna be damn sure I’m prepared. Often times I’m alone and there’s bears (and wolves) literally EVERYWHERE where I live. Cheers from Juneau, Alaska 👍

I'm not certain if I'm afraid of Grizzly bears, I have never seen a bear in person. I have lived all my 60 years in South Texas, and we don't have any bears here except in zoos and I don't think we have a Grizzly at the zoo either. Perhaps I may crap myself, I just don't know. Personally I really enjoyed your story, and I don't think as a person who's never seen one I don't feel qualified to be a critic. I do know that I would be armed in bear country because I live with the most dangerous predators on the planet. Other people so I stay armed at all times and since I live in Texas "I Can" legally carry a handgun on my hip and I do. I even carry it to bed. I have never had a reason to shoot anyone, but it has saved my life and the lives of others many times.

They can bite your arm in half. The bite isn't the only thing to be afraid of, the neck and the claws plus a bears bite are the deadly combo.

You should be very scared of grizzly bears and respect definetly them. Bears have really huge tough arms they can use with very long sharp claws that can tear your skin to shreads of meat. And big ass k9's that will tear a huge chunk out of you. Plus they are really smart and if you piss them off theyll go out for revenge on your ass

Closest I came to seeing a bear up close, touching distance was one that was set up in a local, private museum that has a black bear on display. It standing on its hind legs and must be 7 1/2 feet tall and as wide as almost 2 men. I couldn't imagine a brown bear aka. Grizzly standing at around 8 1/2 to 9 feet tall. Bears are huge animals. I was thinking to myself, it will take multiple shots of big bore ammo to put a bear down.

Great vid’s I used to guide for Gary Vince with Muskwa Safaris and the only time I carried a gun was when I had to go back the next morning to recover a quartered up elk or moose. The only time I took it out of the scabbard is when the carcass was buried.

One tip on ammo shake your round before loading it. You should be able to feel the powder move in the case. Unless its a compressed charge which you wount find with factory loaded ammo. Also if you notice a lot of powder movement in the case that may indicate an underload......Do NOT shoot an underloaded round!

I reload for hunting and for fun. I'm always anal about being organized when reloading to avoid stuff like a powderless shell. But as an extra safeguard, I always give each round a soft little shake to make sure it's hot before boxing it up
Edit: I don't run super hot loads, so there's always a little room. If I don't hear or feel the powder moving in the case, it can also save me from a dangerously hot round.

Loved your video about the grizzly bear and the handloading .
I used to handload all my own shells, I understand it wasn’t you loading, but someone else.
Not as an excuse but I always made a dummy shell to get better accuracy.. A bullet that is longer than factory specs and is as close to the lands will give better accuracy.
Not an excuse, but a plausible explanation.
