    I can confirm that you can shake a round and tell if it has gun powder in it. I can also confirm that is the only way to know if gun powder is actually in the round. You can't tell the difference between a round with and without gun powder just by holding them. You are talking just a few grams difference in weight. What an awesome story! Your guardian angel had your back those few weeks for sure! Keep up the great videos, hunting and Sasquatch, love them both!

    I watched your videos ( and I love your stories ) ok, I watched this story, I watched your video of almost dying in a foreign country of an insect bite, I listened to your video of thoughts on death ok -- I will say it again- when your out in the woods and u listen to the quietness of the day with the warm breeze blowing LOOK UP with the heat of the sun on your face and see the beauty of the sky and whisper Thank You - there’s someone watching over you my friend. Maybe it’s your mama prayers , grandmothers prayers, but God will honor them and thts why you are standing telling these stories. Thank you again sharing your stories and the people you meet.

    I had the same thing happen to me back in about 1988. I shot a hand load and the round made a silent "pop". No recoil.
    Ejected the shell and ammo, couldn't see any daylight through the end of the barrel. Went home. Took it to a gun smith where he hammered a boat-tail bullet back out of the barrel.
    No powder in the shell. The primer exploded and only wedged the bullet into the barrel.
    I quit using hand loads for hunting or self defense after that. Only use them for target practice. Now I buy the best high quality ammo I can find for hunting and self defense.
    Those machines in a good factory are one Hell of a lot more accurate than most of us.

    Best storyteller on youtube.
    I don't trust handloads except for one guy i know.
    A guy once loaded some shotgun shells for my dad when he was the guys teacher back in the late 1970's. He and another teacher went out and shot at some geese or ducks or something and nothing happened. They lower the guns and the shot came rolling out of the barrel.
    Another guy, the son of my hunting partner made a bunch of rounds of 30-06. He was shooting at a deer, hit it either seven or eleven times and the bullets never expanded....the deer crawled out onto the road and he had to pull his handgun out and blow it's brains out in front of a car. He was using too much gunpowder and non-expanding bullets.
    Same guy a decade later has built up many ar-15 rifles and has one that someone screwed up. They forgot to put powder into it or just a little bit. The bullet is now stuck in the barrel and they have bent a few rods trying to get it out.
    His dad, my hunting partner is goingnto have to make him a steel rod with a screwed in brass end and we will try to pound it back out from the front. The steel will not bent at least.
    The one guy I trust buys dies before he buys guns and his stuff is usually before WW1.

    Ok so, here's a story I read in a popular magazine quite awhile back 70s, not sure if it was Field & Stream or another. There was a Canadian Indian guide/trapper that hunted with a British .303 (common in Canada I am told) and he located and shot a huge Grizzly, but only wounded it! He took off tracking it with his horse but there wasn't much of a blood trail (bears typically don't bleed a lot) and after some time he gave up as he was losing light and headed back. As he was riding out to the main trail he was ambushed! The bear lunged from some tight brush, broke his horses neck and spilled him on the ground and finished him. He never had a chance to get his rifle out of the scabbard! A search party later discovered his and his horse's remains being guarded by the bear and killed it. The bear had his .303 round lodged in it's shoulder (none fatal wound) and after doing some tracking of their own realized that the bear let him pass by when he first went after it, and started following him! He was tracked! It may have been someone's exaggerated imagination, but I still remember that all these years later! Knowing that bears are very intelligent as animals go only lends more credibility to the story.

    Ive had federal 308. Misfire in my AR 10. Your right though. I can only recall around 3 misfires from factory in the tens of thounds ive put down range. I only trust one person for reloads, he doesn't drink and he is a gunsmith. There are alot of factors that go into reloading. If you aren't precise and guaranteed not impaired. It is still easy to miss something's. Better to do it yourself or have a very trusted friend.

    I have done my own reloads for years. And cannot imagine e the cartridge being empty. My reloads...I measure the powder by weighing it according to the field tests done and noted, seat the bullet and cap into the cartridge and recheck everything...so curious as to hos that cartridge could possibly be empty. Omygod...so crazy. I have never never seen that happen...also have the proper dies for the right rifle...just so surprised on this video...

    Back in the Dangerous Games Days. 1800 Black powder to the 1940's. Think Africa and all the wild stuff over there that can kill, most all the Prof Guides used Factory ammo. In my view, it is bad luck to hand ammo out to anyone. For me, I have handloaded for 44 yrs. I have popped primers from 40 yrs ago and they all worked for me, But I will never Give or sell any of my work. DG reloading - is a whole level of squeezed butt cheeks I will not tempt. MY DG was bear, a 12 bore, SXS with twin locks. one trigger per barrel. One will always go. I also disbanded the safety. When you levered the gun open, it reset the safety. Consider the brown shorts, when you pulled both barrels and nothing happened. Blame it on Lawyers down south. Cheers!

    Whoa! SOB! What a story!
    I just came back from an Elk hunt in Canada & felt guilty for using factory ammo & not my hand loads.
    Well, that guilt is gone now.
    I think of myself as a careful hand loader, but don’t we all.
    I may well never use a handloaded round again on a big game hunt!
    That was one hell of a good job story telling. Damn!

    • @motorgearhead
      @motorgearhead 5 років тому +4

      Robert Nation - I hand load. I have had a squid load (no powder) but only when running pistol calibers on fast progressive press (Dillon 650) and not using a powder check die. All hunting and precision rifle loads are loaded on a loading block and powder trickled to weight and then bullet seated and crimped (if necessary). Also, I don’t load for other people (as a general rule). I’ve been reloading for 30 yrs. squibs happen in your using progressive equipment.

    • @robertnation3077
      @robertnation3077 5 років тому +1

      motorgearhead yip, I use a Dillion 550 & never have had squib I did however with a Federal factory 9 mm in my BHP!
      I trickle my rifle rounds as well I always say ‘ I load handgun for economy & rifle for performance.’
      I will not hand load for other people!
      After hearing this tale it really drives home the Murphy’s law thing! This story really gives me pause.
      Good to hear from a fellow hunter.
      This channel really rocks!

      Great video. Yes the handoader friend skipped the part where you take a flashlight and look into EVERY charged case in the block to confirm powder before seating bullets. Then checked ALL loaded cases in a SAMMI case gauge for that caliber. I’ve F’d up lots of ammo getting in a hurry or getting distracted but it’s always been plinking ammo. Hunting ammo gets extra special attention. 👍🏻

      @allansmith6140 5 років тому +1

      There's a lot more that can wrong with handloads than just that dumb mistake of not having powder in the case. For one thing you are using recycled brass for the most part. There is the point of rounds not having been resized properly and they won't chamber or cause sticky extraction. There is also possible contamination with oils/sizing lubricants to the primer or powder. I go to GREAT lengths to assure quality handloads including washing the cases to remove all traces of oils after sizing, call me paranoid but I have had one round go poof and lodge in the barrel with unburnt powder making a huge mess once I got the bullet out which was another story, once was enough for me. The other thing I do is Full Length Resize all my hunting ammo. Its printed right there on the die box or in your reloading manual. The problem is that once handloaders become more "experienced" they load for accuracy or extended case life and they do not realize they are getting into the target ammo domain by doing so, its no longer hunting ammo. The more you tweak your reloads by stretching the SAAMI spec, the less reliable you are making your ammo, to the point of idiocy of having no tolerance whatsoever. I do not even use progressive presses as its too difficult to assure quality with them. I have 6 single stage presses that I set up for production, I may not use them all all the time, depends what I'm doing. Look... if you are shooting woodchucks at 500m do what you like with your ammo as you are just target shooting basically. But for anything else use some common sense.

    Good real story pal enjoyed it. Similar story in New Mexico hunt with my son in laws. Elk hunt good stalk on three bulls running cows in late October. Weather shit falling snow two days temp at 20 and below. Told boys to take rifles out of scabbards and sling em. Pussy’s don’t carry guns in bags strap and hump it with your gear. About 9k feet we circle ridge found the heard in valley. Son in law #1 lock and load take the one on left, son in law #2 same take one on right. We’re going for a twofer. Range 120 yards, rifles (270 Weatherby mag & 300 H&H) both sighted in the day before zero 200 yards. On three !!! Ready !!! Both guns go CLICK yea clock is running now. I said reload let me quickly see the rounds before you chamber again. Has some experiences with “squib”loads in past. Both FACTORY rounds no hits on primer. Shit..... alright load we fire on “now” out of time. Ready NOW.......CLICK.....heard gone adios MF. Back down to base camp told story with local old timer. Said you Texas boys may can shoot at home
    and asked if we had greased our weapons before the hunt today....uhhhh yes.......fell off the log laughing you SOB never re-grease your guns up here after you sighted in with this weather. Yeah why???? Because the firing mechanism froze in the assembly with all your lotion you put on it. Let it warm up and try again. They both fired. Picked up two nice antelope the next day same area no big bulls around. Finished off the trip with steaks and Jack Daniels. Will always remember that trip....Shit....

    My bet is that Grizzly learned at some point early on, an association with people and food. The camp was too populated, and at noon, decided to follow you two up the trail because you guys were going to be easier to knock off. But once you guys started up, he was sniffing for food and didn't smell it coming off of you two. So he trailed you guys until he could get a whiff of food emanating off of you. It never happened as he followed you guys back to camp, to where the cabin you decided to change in was right near the cook shack. Bear was desperate at that point and could smell food and watched you walk in that cabin. He finally got the connection he was looking for.

  • @MuskratOutdoors
    @MuskratOutdoors 5 років тому

    Hand loading really is better, you can "fine tune" the ammo to your rifle, and it will be more accurate, but it has to be done right for sure! Where the "fine tuned ammo" really shows up and is noticeable, though is at long range. Hunting shots at 100-200 yards really won't make much of a difference over factory ammo. 300 plus shots, more consistent feet per second ammo, can make the difference between a hit or a miss.... or worse, a wounded animal. At long range, inconsistent ammo can change bullet impact by 6 inches or more. Personally, I like to shoot under 200 yards at an animal, under 100 yards is even better. Sometimes that isn't possible. Loading bullets for accuracy instead of just saving money, is an art. There are a lot of powders, and loads to try until you find the one your gun likes best. Every gun is different.

I'm not a hunter but I'm a huge outdoors person, I hike regularly, I have several trail cameras and I ride horses. I would absolutely love to go out there for a week and experience it. I wonder if that's even a possibility?!

      Even if you aren't hunting? And paying for your own food and equipment? That seems extreme. I understand they need to get paid, feed their horses and hunting season isn't very long, so I certainly understand they need to make the trip plus make a living.

      Honestly, if that's what it costs just to tag along, or if he thought having the extra person would be too distracting on a hunt, I would pay that to have him just take me out there and experience remote BC. I would rather pay him than someone else! My life would literally be in his hands.

    Some of the Grizzly and Lions we have here in Montana have figured out that if you follow a hunter, they will leave a nice yummy gutpile for you to eat in the worst case, in the best case the Grizz may end up with the whole kill if the hunter doesn't get a clean shot, the animal bolts and they lose track of it. Either way, the cat or bear ends up with a meal and very little effort. Maybe he was waiting for you guys to shoot dinner for him and got pissed because you didn't, lol.

      Hi! I was referring to those who pay outfitters for guided hunts. After some research, I found that the horns, hides and skulls are cleaned/processed by the lodge, and the hunters are charged for each animal processed. I was curious if the hunters got to keep any of the meat, or if it automatically goes to the outfitter's kitchen. In addition, what happens to the remaining carcass, such as the claws, teeth, bones, etc.? Do the customers have the option of taking what they want? Sorry if it sounds weird, but I hope that makes sense. Thanks for the response though!

    Funny, but I only trust my hand loads. Plenty of factory loads fail. Bottom line is if my round doesn't go off I want it to be my fault.
    And I can't stand being in Griz country myself. My least favorite hunts and outings are in Griz country. Had three run ins with them, one bluff charge, and have seen a bunch of them. It just sucks being around them cause chances are they are gonna win if things go bad. Too sneaky, fast and strong.
    They are much more stealthy than people think. Master stalkers they are. Dogs are probably the best defense.

    • @johnjacobjingleheimer-schm491
      @johnjacobjingleheimer-schm491 5 років тому

      555Trout - You say “plenty of factory loads fail”. Is there a certain brand and caliber you’re referring to? I’m pretty sure you can look up fail rates on most specific brands, but those published fail rates are basically sayin’ statistically you ain’t ever gotta worry about a bad round. That’s why I’m curious what your experience has been. If you’re hand loading I’m pretty sure you’ve shot a lot more brands and total cartridges than I.

    • @555Trout
      @555Trout 5 років тому

      @@johnjacobjingleheimer-schm491 well, been shooting for 50 years and instructing for 30 years. Range master, personal defense, hunter Ed, etc. Killed hundreds of big game. 40 wild pigs just this year. So I've probably seen a million rounds shot. Quality factory defensive hunting rounds will rarely fail, but it happens. Bulk factory fails often, but not relevant for hunting or defense. My position is this, I can make a quality round as good as any factory. Two modes of handloading, bulk then quality. And I have a system for quality rounds and they are made to a virtually perfect standard And if a round is going to fail me at a critical moment I want it to be my fault. I'm not willing to let someone else determine my fate when I can be in total control.

    • @555Trout
      @555Trout 5 років тому

      @@johnjacobjingleheimer-schm491 as a side note I have never had a quality handload fail. However my bulk handloading fails often. Which I actually desire for training. One needs to be able to recover promptly after a fail in defensive shooting or hunting. And failing bulk rounds provide the opportunity to see how good you really are. In Steve's situation here I don't happen to agree with him that had he had a fail on the bear he was in trouble. I train so that I'd get the next round off in 0.4 seconds with a bolt action. Fundamentally I train and teach that the gun is rechamberrd instantly every time it is fired, without exception. And I mean instantly. And you would be shocked how fast a bolt action can be run by an expert. It's his training that is in question. He's "not a gun guy" per his own words and it shows. So many hunters shoot without rechambering instantly, which is such poor technique. To each his own, but dangerous game requires excellent recovery skills when things go wrong. I kill a lot of wild pigs, and though they are not Grizzlies they are not to be trifled with. And I'm frequently in situations I'd be a fool to be in without excellent recovery skills.
