Being a neonatal care nurse, I've seen babies improving much faster with this method than those who cannot get one due to severe health issues or various other reasons and just lay there in the warmer all day. I wonder why they don't use it in other countries.
Hi, I am a psychologist, psychotherapist and a parent educator. Happy to see that age old, tried and tested ways are now coming back into existence (although they had to undergo re-search). This is something that should be done with all babies. Being in contact with the mother or the care giver instills a sense of security. Hence, in India, we have children sleeping with parents in their toddler days even today. "Make the baby idependent" influence unfortunately caught up and people decided that babies shouldn't sleep with parents or care givers. For example, imagine the fear of the baby if he/she woke up in the middle of night and doesn't see anyone! Having said the above, although KMC is an old practice, it used to take 3-7 days of separation between mother and the new born first and then KMC was given. But now it is being given within 2 hours of delivery which makes the process even more impactful. Its is pretty much zero separation between the mother and baby making it more relevant for pre-term and/or underweight new born. Good work by the correspondent and team.
Hi an Indian doctor here, It is not a new method. It is being practiced all over India for long time. Foreigners who assume we developed this technique because we don't have proper facilities to take care of premature babies.. you are partly right.. and partly wrong 1. Right because: here in India our government provides FREE healthcare facilities in government hospitals. So These facilities are less in number as compared to the huge number of patients who visit govt. Hospitals. Also such advanced baby care facilities are often not available in remote villages. (Did you know that poor mothers are given monitary intensive by government if they choose to deliver their baby in hospital + free medicine + free food/stay) 2. Wrong because: there is no shortage of Neonatal intensive care units in private hospitals.. but not everyone has the money to afford such luxury.
Neonatal intensive care units are more in private hospitals but avg indian parents can't afford them, govt hospital Neonatal ICU are always full hence kangaroo mother care is practiced more in india for low birth weight premature Neonatal births.
She said that since the child remains with the mother we can see the treatment given to them and keep them clean, fed and warm combined with the bond between mother and child helps in improving the child's health.
Right.. you should know the news is showing government hospitals.. That does not mean we don't have private hospitals where there are a large number of NICU equipments.. In India the medical care provided in government hospitals is FREE.. absolutely zero bucks.. poor mothers are even awarded money if they choose to deliver in the hospitals..
