Shearwater Perdix Air Integrated Vlog "User Test & Conclusion" vs Suunto EON Steel in Chale Island

- I put together a comparison video between the Suunto EON Core and the Suunto EON Steel at the end of 2017 while we were diving in Truk Lagoon on a Technical diving trip.
This video prompted a number of comments from divers who were strong Shearwater supporters, stating that the Suunto dive computers weren't as good as the Shearwater brand, and in particular the Shearwater Perdix.
Having never used a Shearwater Perdix it was very difficult to respond, so really this new video was created out of curiosity.
I was very fortunate to be introduced to the fab team at 'Narked at 90', who very very kindly loaned us a Shearwater Perdix AI (Air Integrated) to take away on a dive trip to Roots Red Sea in Egypt, so we could spend some time diving with it alongside our own Suunto EON Steel's. 3 weeks after returning from Egypt we had a planned trip to head to Kenya, to dive at Chale Island.
The Narked at 90 team were only too happy to let us hold on to the unit for this trip where we also filmed this video.
The content of the video are my own thoughts after diving with the Perdix alongside the EON Steel. Neither brand has requested this review, and the Shearwater Perdix has been returned. There is no biased opinion involved.
Please do let me know any thoughts you have in the comments, and of course please do feel free to like and share this video.
If you have found this video useful then why not subscribe to our channel to stay up to date with all our new content.

We own both, my wife owns the EON core and I own two Perdix. I feel as follows. IF you are a tech diver or ever plan on tech diving, don't look further than the Perdix, it's the superior tech computer (and for tech two is useful). IF all you plan to do is recreational diving the EON is the more visually pleasing computer.
TX Defender great analogy, and couldn’t agree more....
I know I am really late to the party .. but wanted to add my 2 cents. I own a perdix 2 Nerd 2 Suunto Eon Steel Black and my latest purchase and pride and joy the Teric and I like them all. i would probably own a Petrel but I don't have a need for it since I haven't dabble in rebreathers. My wife and I rotate my shearwater when I am not using the nerd for under water videography and I don't use my perdix unless I am going on deep dives. My wife uses the Suunto and she loves it. It does the same thing but with a more of a friendly interface. I am a Shearwater fan boy but I do appreciate what other computers have to offer and do use some when the need suits me. Right now my go to is my Teric only because I can wear it in and out of the water. that doesn't mean I would not wear other watch styles with the exception of Garmin MK2 and that is just a whole can of worms their .. tried that one out and no thank you, I will stick with my Shearwater and Suunto. But before I lose my train of thought I would agree with you in your choice. I could use either one and they are great and this is an opinion from a diver who has over 1200 dives under my belt.
Great video of 2 divecomputers. Just received my Perdix AI and it feels very solid👌
Awesome choice - would have been mine too. The Perdix is a beast! Enjoy it! 👍🏻
Just one thing to note on the suunto that you didn't mention. The eon steel and any suunto for that matter will only allow you to display one tank pod on the screen at a given time. Where as the perdix allows to you to display two gases at once. 👍👍👍
Ben Rhodes very good point - good call out! 👍🏻🙏🏼
Great comparison! Great videos! Bought a Suunto Eon Steel, with pod, used for $700. Dont need, and cant afford a Perdix
Don't forget to give the EON Core a try as well. Its a bit smaller than the Steel. Great products and I love using MacDive application SW to manage all my logs and gear. I get a big kick downloading my latest dive over BlueTooth to my iPhone while my gear is in the back of my car and I am driving away from the dive site. Mac Dive app also uses the cloud to update my Mac Dive on my MacBook. Excellent dive management tools! Cheers, --> #SeattleRingHunter
Jeff Morgan hi there, yes - I’ve tried the Core and think it’s a great product.
They were early videos, but we covered the Core launch, and then did a review video of the Core against the Steel... 👍🏻
I like my Perdix. Just haven't bought the two transmitters yet I'd need for my sidemount setup, since the firmware can't combine the two tanks yet for gas-to-surface calculations etc. I hope they'll add that.
On my recent deco pro course I was very happy with the Perdix performance though. Easy to use and read, including deco stops, gas switches, etc.
Great comment, and fantastic to hear you're getting on with the Perdix. It's only really been this year we've become more familiar with the Shearwater range as we had the chance to spend some time using the Teric - what fantastic products they are!!
Many thanks for your clear explication, effectively really difficult to give a rate on these Dive computers
Nasser Said very kind of you to say and good to know it’s appreciated. Lots more to come so make sure you subscribe and stay tuned. We have plans for a comparison video with the Suunto D5, Shearwater Teric and Garmin Descent Mk1. 🤞🏼
That’s perfect very keen to see how will react this new D5.
Otherwise do you have any information if Suunto will create an upgrade to the RGBM Fused 2 for the Eon Steel ?
Thanks very much
Nasser Said we’re off on a trip next week and will be taking a number of computers with us to review.
Actually yes - Suunto will be releasing the Fused 2 RGBM on the Steel very soon. They will also be making it available to download the Buhlmann algorithm on the Steel if that’s preferred.
Have you seen the D5 review we did?
I’ll post the link below.

Black Manta Photography that’s a good news, thank you for this information.
Nope I will check you link now.
Please post any informations when the updates will be released on the Suunto website.

Thanks for your answers. In the market for a new computer, can’t decide between Perdix ai or Suunto Eon Core. Replacing a Suunto Cobra. Don’t plan to get into tec diving, do appreciate the bigger easier to read display
glock2312 if you aren’t going to do any TEC Diving then 100% go for the Core. We were really impressed with the Core, and had we not already owned Steel’s then we’d prob have gone for one.
Have you seen the review video we did on the Core? If not, there’s a link to it at the very end of the Perdix video.
I'm in the same boat. What did you end up getting? I can't get pasted the user interface of the Suunto, however everyone I speak to (Tech Divers) say the Perdix hands down.
What about getting it serviced and customer service in general. I've heard of people sending their computers into Suunto for battery replacement, so I guess it worked out. Seems like I've heard some stories about Shearwater going above and beyond. I'm curious how things are shaking out four years later.
The Perdix AI's software has been updated, and it can now pair with and track up to 4 transmitters.
superb vid, me perdix a1
About the picky point, did you change the perdix compass setting to read only 60° instead 90 (standart setting) or 120° as these last two will give you a jumpy reading, 60 is much smoother. hope this helps.👍
Thanks Jimmy - actually, no, I didn't. It has also been suggested to me that I should have maybe re-calibrated the compass which is something I didn't do. Couple of good points worth noting for anyone reading these comments.
Good Video. I run both a Eon Steel (had for 4 years approx 500 dives) and a Perdix AI, which is a recent addition. With the Perdix in Rec mode, the Eon can be set to be more aggressive (less conservative on NDL) They both give similar stop times
The Eon's screen is easier to read at more acute angles. The Perdix needs to be viewed more straight on. The Perdix has the advantage of being able to have 2 gasses side by side for Side Mount, the Eon cannot and they refuse to add this feature still. The Eon also has the water sensor which in hot humid conditions can keep your computer on, unless washed and dried
The Eon (Steel) is a heavy beast in just a rash vest, the Perdix is nice and light. The Perdix can be easily converted to bungee (surgical tube supplied) as can the Eon if you have access to a small torx bit.
I get 32 hrs battery life on the Eon that's' 4 years on and many charges with screen set to max brightness (I dive and live in the Middle East )
The Eon allows for more customisation
Perdix great for Tech divers all planning on the same algorithm but in the past I've had no issues planning across computers for depths upto 50m and deco less than 30 mins
Currently I still prefer the Eon but I need more hours with the Perdix to really come to a hard conclusion
LXProgrammer thanks for the very detailed comment here. You’ve clearly been using both extensively so valuable information you have provided here!
LXProgrammer you raise some really great points. Would be interested to how you get on between them as you become more familiar with the Perdix!
Tested Perdix with OSTC
Perdix is perfect for Tec
I did Tri mix 100 meter and Air up to65 for long bottom times
Perdix allow more customizations under water for quicker ascend
Gas mix change is very easy
Ang using the @+5 and tissues saturation is much easier
It is simply perfect
Suunto eon steel!!! Best
7:16 Eon Core linking up to 10 tank pods I think was mentioned as a feature for dive instructors to keep an eye on student tank pressures. However I'm not so sure that is accurate thinking being that the computer has to be relatively very close in range to even report another divers tank pod pressure.
Jeff Morgan very true - I’ve since found out they recommend a 6ft/2m distance from transmitter to device, so the teacher/student thing is completely irreverent..!
I originally though that too. Thought it was a great way to check they were giving me the right signals.
But no. It’s only for your tanks... when you have 10 with you haha
6:38 I dive the Suunto EON Core and from the Perdix videos noticed the compass display is only a portion of the full 360 as a ☹️ face. Can the Perdix AI be configured to show the full 360 degrees of the compass layout as is on the EON Core?
Jeff Morgan I dive a Suunto Steel - been a great DC for me..!
Yes - I believe it can show the full compass reading from some changes in the settings.
With the core, do you have to pair with your transmitter each dive or is it lifetime pairing as well
Dax Hinton great question - thank you. No, once paired the pod is paired for life on both the Core and Steel.
Good video any thoughts on how the Perdix AI compares to the Suunto Eon Core? How does the underwater screen visibility of the screen compare between the two?
Thanks for the comment and question. There are 2 answers here, and it would really depend on what kind of diving you're planning to undertake.
I didn't go into heavy detail, but the algorithms are completely different. Suunto uses RGBM, while the Shearwater comes loaded with Buhlman (Gradient Facto) which can be upgraded to VPM.
If you're going to be Technical diving then the Perdix should 100% be your choice.
The Suunto EON Core is a smaller version of the EON Steel, but with the same size screen. The Core is an advanced recreational computer while the Steel will bridge you into the world of technical diving.
Screen visibility is very good on both models. The Suunto has a larger screen with bigger bolder numbers, but with that comes less information being displayed.
Hope this helps to answer your questions...?
PiezoElectric buttons work by applying pressure to them (around 3:13 in the video!) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piezoelectric_sensor ;)
Yep - fair. I actually got the information for the Perdix from the internet as I didn't have any manuals, and on the page I viewed states "Piezo-electric Buttons on either side don't require any kind of movement or pressure to use them so are quick and easy even when wearing thick gloves." :)
Is there anything new on the market since this video came out, that could compete with the two?
Good question. At the start of 2019 Scubapro launched the Galileo HUD (we've just reviewed it and is the last video posted on our channel). It's a different concept from the traditional wrist worn computer, but will do everything and more the Teric will deliver.
There are a few tablet style DC's out now - one I'm keen to test is the Mares Genius. It's not something I'd usually go for but intrigued by the screen display.
I'm not aware of Shearwater launching any update to the Teric, but they have just launched a limited edition version that has a gold bezel and red strap - looks really cool.
Depending on how long you can wait, Suunto are rumoured to be launching a smartwatch version of the D5 in a few months. One would assume that any update will come with a better performing battery (especially if it is a smart watch!)
Also, there is a rumoured launch of a Descent Mk2 happening in Spring 2020. I imaging that this will be an updated Mk1 and would hope it has air integration. If you don't need to purchase now then I'd wait a few months. You can then either purchase a newer model, or get the current one cheaper.
Hope that helps....
Here's the Scubapro HUD review I was talking about...

@@BlackMantaPhotography yes it does, thanks!
@@999racing I actually thought your original comment was on another video - my bad..! Tablet style DC wise - there isn't much on the market new other than the Mares one I mentioned. There is however, lots new in the wearable watch style DC!
@@BlackMantaPhotography ok. Im probably more into tablet style, but not sure. Ill try some things out before i buy one
Price comparisons are really based on market, for example in the US market the Suunto EON Steel is $1,440 MSRP while the Perdix AI is $935 MSRP. I believe the Canadian market is similar.
Team Peg Leg wow...! It’s the other way around in the UK. Steel is considerably cheaper than the Perdix by some way I believe...
The eon steel can read 10 pods but one at a time. The shearwater can read 2 at the same time
Changing the shearwater batteries every 40hrs is a hassle
God kinG the rechargeable functionality of the Steel is certainly more convenient for sure.
True, but AA batteries are easy to get, unlike a charger if you forgot it or broke it. There's something to say for each solution.
Just put in the SW a Lithium AA battery or the SAFT LS14500 and your hassle will happen once a year
How do you track accurately the 40hrs of battery life with AAs, so you don’t replace too late or soon?
Unless you are a serious tech/CCR Cave diver, we are talking about who's laundry is whiter. If you are a serious tech/CCR diver buy the Perdix. If not, buy what you can afford!
perdix da best
Ps EON having 10 pod integration is pointless and frankly dangerous.
And lets be honest - anyone who needs to dive with 10 pods will be using a Shearwater anyway...
Ten years ago Suunto had the market. Now it’s all shearwater. Tells its own story. Suunto heading down hill fast
They really did Stu - you are so right! They're still a great entry-level unit for new divers, but the crown has definitely slipped! Shearwater have come steaming through with outstanding products, although I spoke to a retailer just last week who said the sales on the Teric have plummeted in favour for people opting for the Garmin Descent Mk2. Will be interesting to see what happens there...
Lets not forget the EON will only run Suunto's own bizarre and unpredictable algorithm (of which there are a few variants, RGBM, tech RGBM etc..) and won't run VPM or Bühlmann profiles with gradient factors. The only control over the suunto is a conservative setting ranging from -2 to 2... Compare the other features all you like, but with a proprietary algorithm, the EON simply isn't a tech computer. Sure it's nice to use, but not an equal contender to the perdix or petrel.
eon steel now lets you choose the algo
Thought the review was very sunto biased, imo shearwater is much better all round technical computer for example when using transmitters the shearwater allows you to view 2 transmitters at the same time perfect for side mount unlike the sunto where you can only view one transmitter at a time and you can use more than two transmitters enough said there i think… the shear water uses bulmans 16c not the rgbm used by sunto and the shearwater is fully customisable not like the sunto that restricts the user. I could go on but I’m not rewriting your review 😂 buy the shearwater people 😂
Hi Matthew - thanks for taking the time to comment on the video. I do love it when people that take the time to watch also take the time to feedback. To be fair this review video is now 5 years old almost so probably needs updating. The current models of the EON Steel do now provide the user to downloadthe Bulmans 16c which was a massive step forward for Suunto. It can also use multiple transmitters as I used a Suunto Steel along side a Perdix when I dived Truk Lagoon a few years back on a Technical dive trip. I was diving accelerated deco dives on sidemount with x 2 stage tanks and was able to switch gases pretty easily.
