Man, the more and more i watch you guys the more I relate this stuff to Aviation and want to learn Diving so much more. When we fly, we have to adjust for the Magnetic Declination as well as different variances that acceleration and deceleration has on it. You guys are truly awesome! This channel is going to go so far.
Another tip with the perdix if you’re diving with a group that may be doing skills or training you can adjust your end of dive cut off from 60sec to say 120 to avoid it coming up with logging multiple dives because you had to surface with the group or your buddy for only a matter of seconds to a minute as part of the planed dive resulting in one log not 2 or 3
I think your understanding or at least your explanation of magnetic declination is off. I don't think changing this is safe for most divers also. There is magnetic declination anywhere you go because the magnetic poles move in regards to our maps. If you are using a map to determine your heading, then yes, you need to compensate for that just like when backpacking in the Sierra Nevada's where there currently is a magnetic declination of about +13 degrees. My NatGeo maps for backpacking actual tell me the approximate annual declination deviation amount so a person can calculate the declination based on the current year and the year the map was printed. If your dive guide tells you to follow your compass to a "Heading" of X degrees, and you have a declination set, then you will likely cause the situation you are trying to avoid. This is because the guide is using a magnetic compass reading based on experience, and not calculated declination. I can see this feature being useful as a cave diver (I am not a cave diver as of now) who might follow maps drawn to previous declinations, but not navigating open water or based on directions from other divers. I'm a new viewer to your content, liking what I've watch so far. Keep putting out good information and trying to make diving safer for everyone. Cheers, and Safe Diving
+1. Setting the declination is only necessary if you need to follow a bearing based on "true" north (which maps use)... and you don't want to just add/subtract the declination from the given number in your head.
I love your vids. These tips are awesome and though I don't use shearwater, these options are on my dive computer and your description of what they are and how to use them is very very applicable to other devices! Thanks gus!
Yeah. Though if I wanted a bottom gauge I'd get a Peregrine as a backup. The guy at my lds uses a perdix ai/peregrine when diving. If I didn't have my Zoop I'd consider his setup.
@@DIVETALK I'm just not sure what you are doing to make it not log dives. I've been googling to find information but can't. I don't see it in user manual either. I wish if you deleted a dive it would reset the numbers, but it doesn't. Feature they need to add.
@@scmsean late answer but for the others ! If you delete a dive the number (x for exemple) of this dive still stay in the computer. You have to reset the numbers by yourself saying next dive is dive number x. Delete the dive and reset the number right after you have done the dive
What happen to my perdix dive computer if I dive 1 to 2 dive then the battery is getting lowbat early even the battery is new.i hope you can help me thank you 😊
Hi, for adjusting to True North on dive coms without True North adjustment, could we just re-calibrate that dive com at the dive location itself? Would it be the same as manually adjusting for True North on the Perdix setting? Been trying to decide between the Perdix and Atmos. Thanks!
The compass will not point to true north after calibration, it will point to magnetic north. The difference between magnetic north and true north on a map changes depending where you are on earth. That is why there is a feature to input the deviation of magnetic north and true north. If you only care about pointing the compass at an object and staying on the heading underwater, then changing the deviation doesn't matter. It mostly only matters if you are referencing a map or instructions that reference true north.
@@DIVETALK As far as safety goes I’m sure you’d want to use your regular computer as well. Redundancy is always good. Then you just make the personal decision of the extra expense on a piece of equipment that is occasionally lost. I’m not sure, I don’t dive. But this channel has me wanting to reaaaal bad.
My twin boys are 14yrs old, we have just started diving. I am a rescue diver and my twins have just past their advanced open water with Padi here in Ireland Last I dive a Suunto and my twn James dives a suunto also. My other son dives a shearwater perdixj, it took me weeks to save the money to buy the Shearwater for him. His shearwater was stolen from a dive site 2 weeks ago. Can you help as I know you are a shearwater ambassador. Please help if you can. We live in Ireland. Thank you for any help, i am a great fan of your talk show.
Hi Jim, first of all I’m proud of you and your boys for diving as a family, that’s awesome. I’m so sorry his computer was stolen, that’s so awful to hear. I’m not a Shearwater Ambassador (they actually don’t have any ambassadors) but if you have the serial number I can submit it to Shearwater and have them blacklist the computer so if they ever get it in for service or whatever they will know it’s yours.
Thanks very much, I will look for the box and paper work. My boys and I watch your channel all the time, you and Woody have so much information and the way you share it is brilliant. Keep up the good work, one day I hope to dive CCR. Again thanks for your help
I know this video is over a year old and I'm not sure if the feature was available then but you can now add text to the startup like name and number and even a startup image! Not sure if it's across the board but at least on my new perdix 2!
Excellent informative video spoilt by the background music playing over the narrator's voice. Keep up the great work but ditch the background music......please.
Supeeer ! Another Features that have the Shearwater its the TagPoints during a Dive ! Thats pretty awesome when you need to know at what direction and depth are some interest points ! Try on !
Great info. Maybe it’s just me but the background music was distracting and didn’t add to the presentation. Maybe most people like the music and if so, ignore this comment. If you’re doing a tutorial or review maybe lower the volume of the background music? Or remove it? I actually bailed on the video before you finished because of the music. Sorry. Great info though. Really well organized content too.
Love the content. Just please lower the music volume its hard to hear and stay focused. Love the vids
You are definitely correct on that.
Nah we love the music diving ain’t for OLD people! Hehe hehe
Thanks! I appreciate your description of Gauge mode. Extremely helpful.

These guys just got me started on diving. I've been pursuing a private helicopter license and so much of aviation applies to diving.
VOR don't work under here

Agree with other comments. Music made it really hard to focus on great content.
The gauge mode setting is sooooo helpful!
Awesome job. Excellent talk on the compass setup. I didn’t know that.
Thanks for watching!

What brand is there orange cover on your DC
I knew about gauge mode but never used it, and never thought to use that for classes, thanks!
Can we get a tour of the podcast studio? Always curious about how many monitors you have crammed in there lol.
Can you please lower the music volume a bit? Thank you for this video!

What do you think of the sage
Thanks for helping us out
I remember getting a digital bottom timer when they first came out, and thinking that was some pretty high tech stuff.
Amazing how far we have come and how much more is coming.
Yeah. Though if I wanted a bottom gauge I'd get a Peregrine as a backup. The guy at my lds uses a perdix ai/peregrine when diving. If I didn't have my Zoop I'd consider his setup.
I do GUE, and we are required to be in gauge mode. It always logs my dives. It is only reason I use it over just a depth gauge and timer.
Good info. Thanks

I just got my Perdix! Thanks for this!!!!
My husband and I just bought the Peregrine and we love it so much! ❤️❤️
Music too loud compared to voice
I couldn’t care less about diving but I still love the channel
Thanks Daniel!
This was useful, thanks! Could you some day explain, how do you use the SGF (surface gradient factor) on your Perdix?
Sounds like a good topic! Thanks.
What do you think about the Teric compared to the computer that you are using in this video?
Keep up the great content 👌
👌🏼
I liked the info but at times I really couldn't hear what you said because of your loud background music
We have recognized this and improved sound balancing going forward. Thanks for the input.
How many computers do you use for rebreather diving?
2 or 3

Hey Gus! What is that multi-button device with all the lit up buttons to the right of your camera? Great tips in this video BTW!
Curious. Where can one purchase the protective case?
Shearwater dealers or online
Thx again Gus.
So I am in rec mode and I don’t see that gas switch in advanced configuration 1
What happens if you go to other modes? Like OC Tec?
Instead of manually putting in plus or minus numbers for the compass, wouldnt it just be better to just recalibrate it once you are at your location?
The compass will not point to true north after calibration, it will point to magnetic north. The difference between magnetic north and true north on a map changes depending where you are on earth. What do you think of masks with a HUD?
I’ve never tried them so I guess I have no comment on them. I do use a Nerd 2 when I dove my rebreather and I love it.
@@DIVETALK Any thoughts just on the concept?
@@patrickhenry8637 I think it’s cool but what if you lose your mask? It happens, I lost mine 3 weeks ago.

The Background music really should be left away. It’s really tiring and in some way annoying. Otherwise thanks for the nice video. 😊

Great content! I love your videos. Do you have got problem with function button of the peregrine ?

I don't and you should definitely reach out to Shearwater, they'll take care of it if it has a problem!
