  • How young, is too young to start working?
Recently the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce made headlines when it proposed the province lower the minimum working age from 14 years old to 13. There hasn't been a whole lot of information about why this change was proposed. The Chamber has not been available to do interviews for the past week.
We'll hear from a business owner and a teen worker. We'll hear about a study looking into the longterm job prospects of people who start work at a young age.
How old were you when you had your first job? What did you learn from that experience? Do you think the legal working age in this province should be lowered to 13?

Is anyone else horrified that people are sitting and having a very serious conversation about whether or not child labor is good for the economy? Just me?

Yes. I'm horrified as well. There are too many things happening to kids these days. Would these kids have the situational awareness and street smarts to know the difference between personality and character of whoever may try to take advantage of them. Would they be wise enough to know when a job is a hazard? I saw a news article of a young teenager who did not realize a job was unsafe and they died horribly. I worked the summer when I was 15 with parental consent. Yes, I think 13 is too young, unless perhaps it's a family business.

Usually when a group like a Chamber of Commerce want to change a rule and they refuse to have a public conversation and defend their desires to the people it means that their true reasoning is exploitative. It is the nature of Capitalism to exploit but it is our duty as a society to ensure that we are exploiting the correct things. For me personally, children are not the correct resource to exploit. This change should not go forward.

Ya , it's all about getting a source of cheap labor for the service sector. Maybe if the service sector paid then they would attract more

short answer no.. long answer NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
if businesses can't find workers then they need to offer more pay and/or benefits to get people to work for them.

nope. I wouldn't let a 13 year old operate a grill, fryer or cash register. This is absolutely disgusting to even consider.

In my opinion, 13 is fine for some jobs and within government guildlines as laid out by Sean at 4:00. It will give young people a chance to have structure and learn some values of life. Amelia Watson was very insightful for a young person. I agree with her reasons why working at a young age has value.

2 hours a day might not be much but it’s more than many moms and dads out there would have left over after paying their bills each month

Now 13-17 year olds can have a lower minimum wage so they can have a chance at getting hired. At $17.40 an hour they’d be priced out so $12.50 would be fine for such trainees as they are living at home

Know kids working young on farms and family business. They usually develop great skills and become very responsible. They have organizational skills and develop great integrity that shows up in later years as a major plus. Too many youngster that wouldn’t know to clean up or do yard work at home could use some structure.

Working young allowed me to pay for college, so my parents could live longer wothout having the stress of paying.

It’s good to teach young 13 year olds the responsibility of earning $ and live a less entitled life. 2 hours a day at McDonald’s would do wonders
