Just finished my own version of this bench.. made it L shaped for our corner and used ship lap for the back.. but turned out great!! Thanks for the idea easy to follow video! AND thank you for being very transparent on your design! 😁😁
My last bench banquette was in an L-shaped corner of my kitchen 15 years ago. I am going to use your design for my current home to add more space to our walk-through dining room. I always like to take any dead space (cubbies under the seat) and turn them into storage also. Brilliant Laura!
@@TheUnprofessional it appears at 12:34 mins that the finished seat-back has an additional length of a 1" piece at the top. Is this true or am I just seeing a shadow? The unpainted seat-back had a straight slope of plywood attached to your 1" x 2" wall anchor.
Great job! I’m researching and getting inspiration for a small dining room we have. I’ve only been seeing benches in a L shape which we don’t have room for. This is more of what I think will work for us. Maybe another bench on the other side and not chairs. Again great job!
Curious question. How tall is your back rest piece? Building this with my son tomorrow. My put padding on the back rest as well! Would appreciate the height of that back rest piece! Thanks in advance!
This looks amazing, thank you. I'm about to build this, and I'll be using this video as my guide. Is there anything you'd do differently or improve if you built it again?
Thanks!! Great question. It has held up really well. If I did it again, I’d add a drawer to both ends instead of just one. Good luck, I’d love to see a picture when it’s done!
Could you elaborate on the back piece. I see in the video you screwed a piece of wood to the wall and then screwed the back at the top. What isn't shown is how the bottom of the back piece was attached to the wall. As its on an angle, did you cut small pieces of 2x4 with mitered ends??
Great question! I attached a 2x4 to the frame along the wall and screwed the bottom of the back support into that, which created the angle. I have a blog post with the instructions and a photo of this step here: theunprofessional.com/create-a-small-space-eating-nook-with-this-diy-banquette-bench/
I love this bench, looks amazing.I'm in the middle of making one .Can you please tell me how high your back rest is.I'm trying to figure out the correct height.Thank you
@@TheUnprofessional What paint finish did you go for?I'm leaning towards satin but not sure whether it might be a little bit on the shiny side.Any advice towards this?Thank you.
Nice design. My biggest concern about building one of these is comfort. How has this stood the test of time? Is it comfortable is it for long sit sessions?
That was my concern as well when I built this. I’ll say this, it’s more comfortable than a dining chair but not as comfortable as a couch. I think the three keys are 1) angle the back a little, 2) use 3 inch foam for the seat cushion and 3) have a bit of an overhang on the seat so your legs can hang naturally. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Most folks make upholstered cushions for them. You can DIY a very simple look or go on Etsy, etc and have some fancy custom ones made out of washable sunbrella etc
Love this project and I'm going to start something similar very soon. Can you please advise what length of screws you used for the framing elements? I assume these were countersunk woodscrews as well? Thanks again!
For the frame, I used 2 1/2 inch all purpose wood screws. I didn’t countersink the frame but I did when I screwed in the 3/4 inch plywood, but the screws were 1.5 inches. The frame was all trimmed so it didn’t matter.
I really struggled with the drawer. It was the hardest part of the project in my opinion. I followed this video with some modifications, which is why I didn’t show this part of my build. ua-cam.com/video/Ilda2kqORZI/v-deo.html
Everything including the drawer hardware, paint, trim, fabric and cushion foam were in the $350-$400 ballpark. I used cabinet grade plywood, which is $65 per sheet, soft closed drawer slides and water resistant fabric, all of which are a little more costly.
You are absolutely right! I didn’t notice until after I posted the video. It’s correct in the corresponding blog post. A very unprofessional mistake on my part LOL!
The top is ikea and I added a polyurethane coat. The legs are from Amazon. I learned from experience that the table legs need to be pillar or X shaped to get in and out of the bench easily.
It's not a Banquet bench (bank-wet), like going to a Large Formal Sit Down Dinner usually in a Hotel's Event Space to honor a retiree or award winner Banquette is pronounced bank- ett, like marionette puppet )
That was well done. Smart design on the overhang. Sometimes an overlooked feature.
Thanks for the nice comment! And YES to the overhang. I’m so glad I added it.
Nice job!

This makes my day! Good work on the bench and thanks for the comment!

No fancy shop here! That’s for sure 😜. Your comment made my day! I’m so glad the videos were helpful. Good luck with your project!

Yep you are seeing it right, there is a flexible piece of PVC at the top. It was the only way I could trim against such an uneven wall.

Probably a weird comment here... but I am going to need you to move in here and help me finish my job. Today is good for me 😁

So nice of you to say! Good luck on your build.
I have been trying to find a design that fits thank you and you saved me sleep.
This was so clear! Thanks for the awesome video!
I am so happy you found it useful! Thanks for watching
Great job
Thanks for sharing this! I'm about to build a new booth in my kitchen and am going to borrow heavily from your design! Great video!

Best design on You Tube.
Thank you! Best comment on UA-cam 🤗

Looks amazing, but can you tell me where did you get the new table? I wanna buy/build one
Thanks! I made the table with an IKEA desktop and legs I found online. I have a video of it here: ua-cam.com/video/le2M8eFeMCI/v-deo.html

@@ashtonzaranyika8222 I believe I used satin as well. A little shine makes it a lot easier to clean if you plan to use it as a dining bench.

This is awesome, well done!! The storage drawer is such a great idea!! Very inspiring! :)
How did you make the drawer?

How much did you spend on all the supplies?

I can't find the plans or materials on your website?
I wish I could do this.
Nice
try using an electric knife to cut the foam . If you don't have one ask your mom or grandmom they have one sitting in a draw somewhere
Great tip. Thanks!!
You put a 2x2 in front/lip, not a 1x2. I am building the exact same thing.
You are absolutely right! I didn’t notice until after I posted the video. It’s correct in the corresponding blog post. A very unprofessional mistake on my part LOL!
Next time you have to cut foam, just use a really sharp butcher knife. It will cut like butter!
Good to know! The saw worked ok, but it would be nice to have cleaner edges next time. Thanks!

I came here for ideas... stay for the cringe. So many more ways to do it easier and sturdier.
