I have watched him for years.
I guess I just happened to miss his grumpy, growly moods.

Growls and hisses along with looking at you like you are a stranger.
The only way to know for sure if he is ailing in any way, is to have him checked out.
Everyone who looks at these videos knows the amazing pet parent you have been to Max and to the other wonderful creatures you take care of.
Max always looks amazing in all his photos. Love the shots you take of him.

HI Bernie and Max. I hope your little angel doesn't have a wee demon of an ailment. I've never heard Max growl before. It's kind of scary. Has he done this like this before? Maybe a checkup is in order. But he's your baby and definitely know him best. Even after seeing this side of him, he's still an angel to me. You both take care.💕

Pero de hecho, como dije antes, simplemente lo escuché de una persona que tiene una pantera, y que dijo : probablemente ella cambie su carácter y tenemos que estar preparados si eso llega a suceder.
Noto también que Max tiene una mirada agresiva, ya no la dulce que tenía años atrás. No se si se deba a un proceso de "maduración" de las especies.

@Anthony Colangeli - Exactly. I like to show all aspects of Max's behavior so people don't think that they can get one because Max shows gentleness all the time. He seemed to be in a loving mood this morning with purrs and hand licks. I brushed and touched everywhere and he showed no signs of pain or irritability with the brushing. Go figure.

I think it was a suckling act going back to kittenhood. Perhaps it comforts him when he is stressed. But that brings us back to why is he stressed?
@Vasilii - This is the first time I've seen Max snooze like that. He was purring, snoozing but still listening to the squawking blue jay.
@Jeff - Yes, a suckling act. He groomed himself and then it was time to snooze. His behavior seems normal in regards to everything else. I still keep an eye on him.

March is mating season for Canadian lynx, I’m not sure if you were ever aware of that? So, it could be the reason why he’s more aggressive around this time.
@Friedrich Wulfgang - No, I actually didn't know that, but Max was neutered at 6 months old and he's almost 12.

@@wildlifebernie I think Friedrich has a good point. I wasn't sure when mating season was for Canada Lynx, but I was aware that bobcats mate in March and bobcats are indeed members of the Lynx family. Here in MA, we get news reports every year of people seeing bobs in their yards, when normally, these cats are very elusive. And, as you have observed many times, Max always seems to be more frisky and unpredictable in March. You can take away the "family jewels", but I am not sure that completely removes the instincts and urges that are wired into his DNA. I think you've mentioned before that you caught him humping a soccer ball, so there's some evidence that his brain still knows he's a boy. That said, I can't say we've ever seen him act quite like this toward you. Food aggression, yes, and once in a while a quick growl when you try to take something away from him, but he seemed pretty grumpy here. Probably something to watch. If it is stress due to mating season, hopefully it will pass soon.

@Donna Ryan - We were without power today for 14 hours. I locked Max out of his large enclosures because we were expecting heavy snow, and yes it happened. He was thrilled with fresh straw in the covered enclosure and spent much time snoozing in his doghouse inside. It's his typical March behavior.
Max may be grumpy occasionally,but he is so handsome!❤🐾❤🐾🐅💋❤ am really sick of seeing these jerks posting killing ,trapping bobcats, its disgusting and should be outlawed. Thanks for sharing your furbaby Bernie.❤💋🐅❤

The grumpiness may be due to hormonal changes with Spring coming on. Or perhaps you have a Bobcat or other critter in the area that is bothering him. I would get a vet check if it continues. And back away!

And never approach the soft tender underbelly. That never turns out well, no matter the size of the cat.
I think if she reached in there, he might grab her, but I think that when he feigns lunging, that's just bluster. Even a cat of Max's size seems to know that he's no match for a human. If a Lynx were to attack someone, they would do some damage for sure, but in a knock-down, drag-out fight, they know they will lose. Cat's are pretty smart critters.
@Kevin Madore - Yes, it was a bluff charge but what I didn't get on camera was when I reached for my tote bag hanging above him, he stood up and started slapping at the small cage panel that was between us. However, when I returned carrying a broom to defend myself, and fetch the stool, he ran. I need to be mindful about what I wear or carry into HIS enclosure because if he becomes possessive of it, things will not go well for either of us.

@Kathleen Benak - He had been constipated and I got things moving again but it's challenging with all that fur! Keeping a close eye on him.

The way Max sounded, I almost thought there was chicken involved. That tongue thing was adorable. Has he done that before? I hope it's not a sign of a problem.
@Samantha Dreiling - LOL. No, never done the tongue thing before but then I'm not always around when he's sleeping. Max seemed fine today but still watching him closely.
Animals are just like people. They have good days and bad. When they don't feel well, they get grouchy. Patients, love and a lot of caution.

@KARI NA - Yes, I've noticed that he's getting age spots in his eyes and I sent a photo to my vet but he didn't seem too concerned. I wonder if it's his vision degrading or just spots. He has a vet visit this year for rabies and will get a full workover.
Maybe he's not feeling well, or just needs more attention. Really it could be anything. We all get grumpy from time to time. 🤔

@faeryhill1 - Although my gut says Seasonal Behavior, I got to wondering...what if. So, Max has a scheduled appointment on April 28. Max sends his purrs. 😻
We are worried for Max please maybe call in vet to check up on him. He might be getting ill.
@Timur Kainazarov - He has been having bathroom issues and I changed his feeding arrangement to splitting up his 1.5 pounds of meat into two feedings and been dosing him with cod liver oil. I've talked with the vet and he says to keep him updated. His stools look okay but now I'm thinking his grumpiness could be arthritis in his hip BUT you'd never know it by the way he was running around this morning. However, I've got my eye on him and he's growled at me before.

@Glenn Griffon - Ever see the video of him growling at me with a chicken leg sticking out of his mouth? Well, he took over my tote bag which had a bag of his fur inside, my camera and the brushes. I had it hanging on that small divider and every time I tried to reach for it he growled at me. It was his. Along with the stool and his t-shirt. He actually attacked that divider but it was between us thankfully. Today he was fine until he got annoyed with the brushing.
@@wildlifebernie I suppose at the end of the day Max is indeed still a wild animal and can sometimes be unpredictable.
I just hope he doesn't attack you or anything.

Well, Max will always be an angel so that his Alpha Mom Bernie won't have to behave like a demon. Right?! I recall sometime ago when you were feeding him raw chicken inside and he growled & acted hostile as if daring you to try to take his chicken. Maybe you had chicken for lunch and brought Max no 'doggie bag'? Perhaps he has gas- that'll make anyone grumpy. Or maybe he's pissed remembering how you once let that cute little 'demon' female Lynx (Kayla?) stay with you all a while. At 4:22 it almost looks like he's dreaming of when he was a baby feeding from a bottle. At any rate- Max be a good kitty; you have a great mom. Love You, Linda 😘
@LINDA YOUNG - Yes! No chicken smell but he fell in love with the t-shirt, stool and my tote bag in the same manor. He actually fell asleep right in front of me. One minute he's grooming and the next snoozing, purring and the tongue dance, but you can see his ear move listening to that darn squawking blue jay.
I do not know if Max have been sterilized, but it could be hormonal seasonal response...

@Erik Bruner - Max is neutered but I have seen him carrying around his purple fluffy ball mewing and then humps the soccer ball. Perhaps the desire never leaves.

Max does not appear to be feeling well. Even my house cats would tell me through their behavior that something is wrong. I hope this is not the case. Good luck with your upcoming vet appointment.❤

But seriously, vet check for pain & hormones is in order. He’s too strong to allow him this behavior. I would suspect a hidden spinal strain?????
@Mousie Brown - You know, he does get grumpy sometimes when I run my hand down his back towards his hip. Could be arthritis too. He has a vet visit for this year for shots, bloodwork and all else.
@@wildlifebernie Thanks for taking this seriously. I got seriously bit by a gentle old house cat with an arthritic hip. She was in pain & I tried to lift her up. She bit my hand & spasmed, & could not let go! Lots of pain, soaking of the wound and Rx antibiotic for me & lots of pain Rx to live out her life. Love to you, Mad Max and all the critters.
@@mousiebrown1747 I was bitten accidentally by a cat when I was a kid. I was trying to separate a fight. We had to find the cat in question or get rabies shots. Luckily we knew who owned the cat and verified that it had their shots. Yes, painful! Glad you are okay. Max seemed fine on all fronts today. Go figure.
@@wildlifebernie Good deal! I got the very easy modern series of rabies shots when a 🤬raccoon mistook my hand for some instant oatmeal. Very little damage. But the SOB has hidden my bag with credit cards & car keys! Raccoon thinks he’s funny!
Hi Bernie, looks like Max is trying to tell you that something is up. Often it’s not you unless he’s had a scare but something with his health. Big and small cats can get very ugly when they have an injury or internal problem. I really hope it’s not the case for Max. Has he been playing with his toys or doing his normal activity lately ? It’s always difficult to tell. I hope you and Max can find a solution 😢 He’ll always be a baby boy and is most probably confused with his own reactions 🤷♀️
@Roswitha Acatos - This is typical March behavior or when he gets a bit constipated. I've watched him closely since and he hasn't been snarky with me once. His normal activity is sleeping as with any cat. He ran and jumped the other day, so normal too. A few weeks ago he was carrying around his purple puff ball.

@trippyvortex - I've been keeping my eye on his behavior and he gets nasty when he gets excited either overly by brushing or possessive over a toy. So I'm more diligent about our interactions. Take nothing for granted.

No demon, he's just a baby who is tired of photos probaby. I think he can feel a sort of disturbance in a sense from all of us looking at him, we are all connected. I'd give him some space and let him be.🏞
