Hey everyone, an easy way to support my channel is to shop at Sweetwater using this link: sweetwater.sjv.io/9gyjrQ
    Thank you !
    6/29/23 update!
I can't believe this little video is still going and GOING! Guys, thanks for watching - it means a lot. I've 500+ videos but this was one of the first and I didn't even originally make it for UA-cam. I know it looks like it was made in 1984 instead of 2012, believe me. But the content is still very cool.
Please join me on Saturdays at 5pm ET for my free UA-cam Guitar Q+A livestream. Just text your questions about learning the guitar and I'll answer as many as I can in about 2 hours. If you can't make it on Saturdays, the livestreams are available to watch afterwards and soon I'll be making them into podcasts as well. I look forward to your questions!
And if you're serious about getting better at the guitar, check out my website www.song-bike.com. Lots of great content and PDFs - stuff NOT AVAILABLE on UA-cam.
I do online lessons too. Email me : info@song-bike.com
This beginning rhythm guitar video teaches The Shuffle Pattern. Guitarists substitute this rhythm guitar technique if strumming open-position major chords like E, A, and D sounds too jangly, boomy and "big." Blues and blues-related guitar styles employ The Shuffle Pattern frequently. Come Together by The Beatles is a great example of the D shuffle and the A Shuffle. There are lots of creative variations on the basic pattern taught here. Take it slow and enjoy the learning process ! You can do it !

I find long videos like this more appealing than the short ones. Looks like a real one-o-one class. You give time to think, to adjust, to understand, to repeat. You are a very good teacher, Jonathan.

Being a beginning guitar player I ran across you on UA-cam, sure a lot of the videos were old but after looking it over the information it is not only fresh but more valuable then you'd realize at first glance. After buying the "Easy Guitar Chord & Lead Tricks" and having the physical book in hand and re-watching the accompanying videos with it, eventually it began to sink in. Being 72 years of age has it's challenges both physical and mental, there must be millions out there that share the same problem. However, after struggling for a good while(well over a year) I am now watching your videos on your channel and my confidence is overwhelming.
I have traveled the world many times and done things most people could only dream of but, learning to play a guitar was one of the biggest challenges for me. It was Song Bike with Jonathan Kehew's videos that opened the door for me and I am certain it will for many who try. The Secret is: if you don't get it? Do it again, and again, and again until it comes, eventually it will. Thank You, Jonathan

He sketches ideas that ive known so long i dont know how i learned them reminding me how i got started and what my bad habits have become. He teaches me how i should teach. Sometimes i learn something about the guitar on here, but really its what he teaches me about so many much more subtle things. This is a true master of instruction. Before i tackle a "heavy" music lesson i like to watch him teach some old basic stuff my dad taught me and remember how it all builds from very simple things. I love showing my girlfriend and being like "ok, remember what i showed you, well this is what i meant to say."

Thanks Johnathan for your Guitar Instructional videos. I had almost lost hope at learning this instrument again. I used to play Guitar in church when I was in High School. A few of us had been taught by an older lady from another church in her home. She one told me in front of the entire class that I was not cut out to be a good Lead Guitarist BUT I would make a Great Rhythm Guitarist. At the time I wasn't quite sure how to take that comment. A few years later while I was riding my bicycle home from work, a drunk motorcyclist crossed over the center line and head me head on. I ended up with a crushed right wrist. So of course I had to quit playing guitar for awhile. And even when the wrist got better, I just never got back into it. Although I never got rid of THAT guitar. I still have her with me 46 years later. Recently my wife and myself moved from Denver, Colorado (where Guitar Teachers are Plentiful) to a town of 7,000 in Iowa and not a Guitar Instructor to be found. So I was forced to go to the Web to learn. Now that we have moved I am now really motivated to get back intro playing Guitar. So much so that I had to hang my old time friend on the wall because she needed too much work on her and they could not guarantee the sound. So I bought a used Washburn Acoustic / Electric Guitar. This video here of yours I discovered is amazing and at the right pace. However I do have a question for you and see if you have any creative ideas on how to solve my problem. You see not only am OLD and No Physical guitar Instructor, I am also legally blind. Which means I have 20/ 2100 corrected so I must sit really close to the Computer to read or see something. So that is where my problem lies, if I am sitting that close to the screen, I can not be holding my guitar in front of me and playing along with you. So any ideas would be appreciated. For anyone reading this and wondering if my vision problem will hinder me from playing guitar, NOPE. I have had this problem all my life and I player guitar once and I will be playing it again. Thanks for you time.

Jonathan I just started playing and have spent so much time looking for teaching videos. Although I only have seen the one on the blues shuffle it was explained and demonstrated in a way that a beginner can actually understand and actually learn. It’s almost like a lot of other videos are instructors wanting to show you how well they play. They go so fast you end up more frustrated and feeling worse about not being able to understand or come close to actually executing what they are trying to teach you. Good job and please keep it up.

I ve got an issue with practising this tho, when you play it, the open string sounds muted, which gives it a bluesy vibe, when i do it is a nit loud and really kills the nice groovy sound, should i mute the open string somehow to make it sound better?

I am a 67 year old living in the highlands of Scotland and have watched literally thousands of guitar teaching videos over the years but have yet to see to see a more technical and gifted teaching methodology, will be seeking out all your videos in future - tonight was my lucky night. I am a college lecturer (part time now) and I appreciate how difficult it is (and how good you have to be) to make it look that easy? Power to your elbow my friend and hopefully my guitar playing will improve significantly from watching your videos.

I love this video ! I am a beginner, and have learnt about the fretboard and how the notes fall in order, but I can't put it into practice yet. But this video I can totally relate to. I'm going to add this to my exercise list. Thank you !
