6/29/23 update!
I can't believe this little video is still going and GOING! Guys, thanks for watching - it means a lot. I've 500+ videos but this was one of the first and I didn't even originally make it for UA-cam. I know it looks like it was made in 1984 instead of 2012, believe me. But the content is still very cool.
Please join me on Saturdays at 5pm ET for my free UA-cam Guitar Q+A livestream. Just text your questions about learning the guitar and I'll answer as many as I can in about 2 hours. If you can't make it on Saturdays, the livestreams are available to watch afterwards and soon I'll be making them into podcasts as well. I look forward to your questions!
And if you're serious about getting better at the guitar, check out my website www.song-bike.com. Lots of great content and PDFs - stuff NOT AVAILABLE on UA-cam.
I do online lessons too. Email me : info@song-bike.com
This episode teaches how to move open-position chords up the neck to create new "voicings" of chords. Guitar players do this to create new tones and options when playing with a second guitar player who IS playing the open-position chords. Also, these up-the-neck chords are useful in band situations where open-position chords can be too boomy or jangly to fit the song.
Best guitar half hour ever in three years. Thank you. Just learning 84 year old. U K
me too just learning 72age from Malaysia
Just relearning at 60 after 42 years of an initial failed attempt. Never too late to learn.
That's amazing
Jim O'Toole how is it coming along?
Started both bass and "regular" guitar at 40. In 2020. Coming along nicely here.
God bless you. One of the best things you can do.
This is what should be taught to a beginner the day they form their first chord. It illustrates what the fret board (WWHWWWH )chord recipe MEANS on the fret board and gives us newbies a a tool for playing along with other musicians...SOLID GOLD Jonathan. Thank you.
If ever someone was Born To Teach -- it's this man.

@@thecastle09 You're just mad.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!! Yayyyyy no one has ever taught me much on utube! You have!!!!!
10 years of playing 5 open chords ..you just opened my world. Thankyou
Jonathan Kehew the Bob Ross of guitar. You sir have helped me progress on guitar far more then any of these other guys on UA-cam. (As awesome as they are.)
High praise, Maxwell! Don't forget to subscribe to my channel. And I have LOTS of videos at www.song-bike.com available to subscribers. Please check it out !!
Favorite corner on UA-cam. That's Johnathan Kehew, Guitarist extraordinaire. Man, would he be a great psychologist as well Zen Master.
Three years ago I had brain 🧠 surgery and was incapacitated for awhile. I found a old guitar 🎸 in the alley. I had never played before. . I took it to a music store and had it restrung. I went on you tube and find JOHNATHAN KEHEW. You my teacher have greatly influenced me . Very VERY slowly thru much repetition i’am beginning to comprehend. Thank you 🙏 more then you can understand what a special, patience teacher YOU are. PLEASE continue!!!!!!
This dude's voice is so perfect for instructing.
Thank you Mr. Kehew a few years ago a good friend of mine gave me a guitar and told me to learn how to play it. That I’m doing so it would help me through my journey battling a couple cancers that suddenly became an issue. Your lessons were part of my medicine. After 4 years now I’m cancer free. I also have learned enough guitar to go back through my lessons. This one was a big boost, once I learned the regular chords . Thank you sir.
You're very welcome David! Join me this Saturday May 13, 2023 5pm ET for a free UA-cam livestream Q+A all about learning, playing, practicing, and caring for guitars. You can text me your questions LIVE ! This Sat. 5pm ET on my UA-cam channel ua-cam.com/users/jkehew1. See you there !
I am a 63 year old beginner who has mastered a few chords. I can be a bit slow on the uptake sometimes but Johnathan is a great teacher. Really impressive. Thank you.
Also a 63 year old beginner. No one makes me feel as optimistic about my guitar playing future as Jonathan!
@@MrBritishGent I am a 69 year old beginner and I agree how patient and thorough Johnathan is. Great Teacher. Good Wishes!!
Jonathan is sooooo underrated. He is absolutely amazing. He can spot on relate to my playing abilities & challenges. He’s so patient & progresses at a perfect pace.
I'm a 63 yr old beginner also. As of Jan 1 2023!
@@guyshaffer6156 Well, Guy. I still consider myself a beginner with 4 years of “playing” under my belt. And I’ve been around the sun a couple more times than you. But Jonathan doesn’t get the accolades he deserves, like other instructors do, such as Marty & Justin. His teaching style is perfect for me.
Hey man, you are awesome!! Thank you! I am 71 years old now, my where has the years gone!!
Good to hear from you again, @d.l.huntministries8131! Please subscribe to my UA-cam channel. If you're interested I have a FREE Blues Guide PDF & video available at my website www.song-bike.com. I finally got enough basics under the belt for this not to fry my brain. LOL Weeeee! What an eye opener. Thank you so much! It finally makes sense...finally means something. It means I'll be able to go up and down the fretboard and not be locked into just the first 5 frets. 🎈🎉❤️😁

I have just found this site. At 72 I am about to start playing guitars I have had for years. This lesson tells me that I have a good chance of learning a lot more than going for weekly lessons with a tutor. I will be looking into all these lessons on a daily basis from now. I have 36 lyrics written over the last few years and I can now start fitting tunes from my head to the words. Thanks a million from an old man in England.

ALWAYS a sheer pleasure to another video you've done. Am 74 and have played many years, love your teaching style. Not everyone can teach - lots of players "know how" , but can't explain it to a new player. Wish I was as polished as you in teaching style.Keep playing my friend. Best wishes in all you do.
YOUR THE BEST, I LOVE THE WAY YOU BREAK EVERYTHING DOWN WHEN TEACHING SO TALK ON AND PLAY ON. GOD BLESS YOU!!
That was perfect for me!!! Thank YOU!!!!
Really a great video! Your videos flow smoothly and patiently but cover interesting and achievable results. From the few videos I’ve seen (but more to see soon), I can tell you are a kind person. Thank you!!
Well done sir. Thank you for sharing your experience with me. I greatly appreciate it.

Great lesson... Thank you.

Very helpful and well delivered. Can't wait to learn more. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your wonderful personality with us.
out of all the how to play up the neck chords this is my favorite. you are so easy to learn. you broke down many barriers for me thanks for the tip
After 50 years of playing guitar its nice to watch your videos to as a refresher on techniques. Plus it gives me hints on how to teach my grandson to play guitar.
That's great, John ! You made my day. Please check out my website www.song-bike.com for more videos not available on UA-cam
Great. Very easy to understand and helpful. I’m learning upside down(left-handed) but it all works great.
I have a whole new out look on the guitar I was so ready to quit but finding you and these lessons has changed this ole mans mind !!!! Thanks you are an awesome teacher !! Thanks again !!!
Your lessons encourage, inform & are clear & I like how you accent topics & points w/observations of, & anecdotes on real-life musicians. Your enthusiasm & words build confidence, & thanks so much for conveying such relatable & conscientious comments in a genuinely friendly way, & for the great asides & tips.
There's a great spirit behind these teaching videos! A well-covered Gerry Goffin & Carole King tune says, " . . . and something happens to me that's 'some kind of wonderful' . . . ;" & it seems this describes how so many of us students feel from your teaching, so let me borrow the title and say YOU are "Some Kind of Wonderful!" Thank you!!!
I happily find myself back to this particular tutorial. Playing up the neck has always been challenging, don’t know why, but Jonathan makes it easy and for me at least, his tutorials just rise above all the others with his simplicity. Someone already said it “ if someone was born to teach it’s this man”. Thanks Jonathan, you continue to both inspire and aspire!
Wow, I really appreciate that, Ian!

Thankyou so much. I've been wondering how to do this. You explained it so well. I will practice.
Excellent teacher. Thanks!
Always enjoy your videos. Thanks for all the hard work and the simple instructions.
you are a gift to us learning guitar, thank you so much.
Thanks again for sharing one of your great lessons...!
Johnathan, I just found your videos today and have to say I'm digging your approach! At age 54 I'm recovering from carpel tunnel surgery in my left hand and facing the same in my right. This video and the classic blues riff video are the only ones I've watched so far but what therapy not only for my left hand but the soul. When my left hand starts cramping I'm going back to the blues riff video to give it a bit of a rest. Thank you for posting these videos and reminding my that I'm not working my guitar, I'm PLAYING it!!
Kenny Coinneach Hey Kenny, good luck with your recovery. If I'm playing a small part, that makes my day!

Just wanted to say thank you for posting your videos. I am learning at age 60 plus and it is a bit of struggle on finger flexibility but I am improving with practice. Your teaching style is superb, you are very clear and show exactly how to do things and offer lots of little tips that make all the difference. You have been a lot of help to me and I think you are one of the best teachers that I have come across on the web. Thanks, Ady from Cornwall in the UK.
Really great stuff. I plan on studying all your videos. Thanks a lot!! Tim.
