It is truly not said enough just how much Jaune embodies the role of the support character. Even down to his very soul, his semblance is made to heal people, bring them up, help them to unleash power they never could imagine on their own.
His and Ruby's realtionship, in my opinion, is the absolute strongest in the entire show.

Jaune has always been Ruby’s most recurring foil on the heroes’ side, Cinder being her most prominent foil on the enemy side. Other foils have come and gone, but Jaune has remained a constant, both to the story and Ruby. He always asked questions she didn’t or wouldn’t. He pushed back against Oz and Qrow for the sake of his friends, because he didn’t trust their intentions. And when the group started doubting Ruby’s leadership he mediated, played the peacekeeper, as Ruby had when he got heated about Oz’s lies.
Jaune wears his emotions on his sleeves, when he suffers he can't hide it. Ruby bottles her emotions up, always running to the next crisis, pushing her suffering to the side because "you need to keep moving forward." Jaune gets angry, he gets loud when he's in pain. But that means eventually he addresses it, works through it. Ruby's never had to confront her pain, because she's always helped others confront their own first.
Their similar drives, interests and personalities. But their differing methods, how they lead, why they lead, and the cores of their characters. Their differences bring out the best in each other, and cover the other’s shortcomings. Jaune gets the way Ruby thinks in a way that only other members of her family do, people that have known her for her entire life. Their mutual bond of support and understanding, one of the strongest and best written relationships in the entire show
Ruby was there for Jaune when nobody believed in him, not even himself. Not even Pyrrha. And Jaune stayed by Ruby’s side when she lost her team, he walked side-by-side with her across a continent on a hunch because he trusted her.
And now when both need that confidant most, their pillar of support is gone.

Also if we are seeing things as Pyrrha only saw that due to a trauma bias Ruby could have done it due to her excesive innocence in conjuction with a bias due to see Jaune as someone in the same position as her, a novice leader that feels uncapable to play their role, and if she can't believe in Jaune why believe in herself?

When has Ruby bottled her emotions up? She's talked about them constantly with her friends, INCLUDING Jaune in Volume 4. Wearing her emotions on her sleeve IS a major part of Ruby's character. I can't believe you chose this of all things when talking about their alleged differences. You seem to want to frame Jaune as the more reasonable one, even though he's literally had decades to work through his trauma over Penny like you claim, all the time he could ever want to, yet hadn't. And going against Oz and Qrow wasn't Jaune's idea, either. I don't want to shit on him or downplay what good he has done, but some parts of your comment are really weird and seem like nothing but headcanons.

It makes me wonder if this is possibly the beginning of the end for Jaune. Just remember that every single member of team JNPR are based off of mythological characters that end up dying. (Jaune= Joan of Arc, Nora= Thor, Pyrrha= Achilles, Ren= Mulan)
Joan of Arc was burned alive
    Thor was poisoned by Jörmungandr
Achilles was shot by an arrow

Technically Jeanne asphyxiated on the smoke, victims of that particular execution method weren't actually burned to death. There wasn't any screaming, just coughing. And if someone sentenced to burn at the stake was to catch on fire or audibly suffered in a more uncomfortable way, an archer was on standby to shoot them. That's how the Medieval Europeans did it. The Catholic Church didn't want to be too cruel (by their standards).

    • @dragonwolfy7599

It would be Jaune, Nora, and lastly Ren if we go by how it would seem the deaths would happen. If it does come true.
Jaune being himself would be killed by Cinder. Possibly like Pyrrha, he would die of valor but would be a terrifying death. Not to mention if he is a legend, he would seem his life could be set in stone knowing he would be like in the books of fairy tales and it wouldn't change what has happened in the bed time story.
Nora would maybe turn into a grimm and die a grimm/live but be like Salem as she would be forced to live like a grimm and even be a evil twin of herself. Unless there would be a giant snake that would gobble her up instead.
Ren being the last one would be the guy to give up after losing his last teammate/girlfriend on the team. He does have a rational mind but I imagine even he will have breaking points that kill the mind aside from the body.
This is my thoughts from what it seems if the team would be doing deaths based on their myth.

Interestingly I think between Jaune and Ruby it can also be said that their teams are also foils to each other in the way that they support their leaders. Because Jaune's suffering and grief is clear and out there, the rest of JNPR always knew what he was going through and could find a way to address it with him, a great example being in Vol 5 when Jaune finds Pyrrha's statue in Argus after he exploded on Oscar. He apologizes to Ren and Nora only for Ren to tell him "Jaune, this needs to stop." and he and Nora finally get a moment to talk about their grief.
On the flip side, team RWBY has a lot of strong personalities, most of whom have a tendency to bottle things up and/or find ways to compensate. Ruby is always trying to pick people up, Yang resorts to anger self-reliance (like many abandoned/neglected children), Blake compensates with either isolation or various attempts at reconciliation (as seen after her return to the team in vol 5) Weiss, much like Ruby, doesn't talk about it or shrugs it off. Ruby's team has seen her plans and tactics, no matter how slapdash they were, succeed and for that they trust her judgment and wait for her to make the call, but because of that, they fail to notice when she's bottling things up because they're all caught up in their own shit, they can't see her suffering because they've been conditioned to think "It's Ruby, I'm sure she'll be fine."
tl;dr- their team dynamics are conducive to the way they grieve and has contributes to their dynamic as foils

My bet is, the only reason why Lewis is not in the story and Alyx is portrayed nicer than she actually was is because the one who returned to Remnant and wrote the story was actually Lewis. It would be way easier for him to write the story about all those characters he met and cared for, as opposed to Alyx who was cold and cruel to them. Why would she want to remember or even commemorate them by writing a book about them and sharing it with the world? Plus it's easier to write a book about someone else than yourself. The question is this however: if Lewis escaped, what happened to Alyx? The opening clearly has Neo's painting at the end transitioning into Alyx on the beach. Could Neo and Alyx be connected in some way we haven't considered yet? Their hateful natures are already very similar after all...

this is my personally interpretation and I doubt it’s right, but I feel like the most recent episode flips ruby and jaune.
jaune, the white rabbit, is constantly moving. he’s late, he’s running out of time, he needs to keep moving, one moment of rest and everything falls apart. but this cycle, while emblematic of jaune’s form of grief and coping, really highlights ruby’s flaw in her get up and go approach.
ruby is speed, she is momentum, she drives the story forward and never stops. in volume 4, where everyone got to grow and have their own very defined arcs, ruby was the vessel to keep the story moving. she had to keep going, not a moment of rest. it leads her to volume 8, where she finally breaks about ‘accomplishing nothing’. all of her forward momentum, atlas still fell, mantle was still destroyed, penny still died, the relics were still taken.
she looks at jaune, constantly moving and not accomplishing anything in his current state. he’s still stuck, all these years later, physically and mentally. how much has ruby positively changed since the start of volume 4? she cycles viciously in optimism and momentum, and it’s done NOTHING for her.
and as personal growth goes, WBY has exceeded ruby immensely. this roll of a hero has stunted her, and through jaune, we can really see that. even though they’re polar opposites in term of their way of grieving, the outcome is the same. always running out of time and always running in circles, changing nothing.

Stunted, all this time, and add in that she's a teen, younger than everyone around her, thrown into a world of adults she thought she was ready for. And for a while, she was. But she's still young, still a kid, and the weight of the world, combined with her own traumas like with her mother, are especially crushing.
A leader, a fighter, a hero, and all of that is challenged, fully challenged, here in this Womderland, where all she is is questioned. "Who/What are you"
A bit rambling, but hopefully the point gets across. That being, sometimes things have to break to make something better. Hopefully Ruby can find that better self

I feel you're exactly right that Ruby did become stunted. Ever since seeing Pyrrha's death she has been cracking, that mask she has worn for so long breaking piece by piece. Her method of dealing with grief is expressed at the end of V4, to carry on "If not for us then for those we've already lost". But she puts her mask back on and changes it to, "for those we haven't lost yet." She expresses this same ideal in V5 of carrying on for the sake of Penny and Pyrrha, and shown once more in V6's memories. Her dearest memories (Pyrrha dancing with Jaune, Penny confiding in Ruby, her mother) are all of the dead.

I honestly think you hit the nail on the head here and with Jaune being Ruby's Ultimate foil she's his they both highlight the similar and different ascpects of eachother. Jaune has been both Ruby's best foil and honestly her only real remaining support pillar ever since vol 3. He's been with her for so long even when her team wasn't. This question has been on my mind since this latest episode but in terms of Friendship's team WBY to Ruby seem more like coworkers/ friends from work where Jaune seems more like Ruby's actual best friend.
I mean think about it aside from Beacon (Which they spent most of their time chasing Roman/White fang) have they every really spent time together as a whole team outside of missions, just them getting to know eachother and learn more about eachother on a personal level? I think if Jaune had arrived at the same time as Ruby on the beach he'd know right away something isn't right with her simply because their much closer than WBY are to Ruby.

I remember the scene in vol. 1 where Ruby told Jaune that he had to be strong because he was a team leader. to me, it seems like Ruby forgot that and her having her breakdown just made it seem as though she didn't really believe he could be a leader. the worse part is how Ruby arrived in the Ever After and ran into the others less than a few hours later while Jaune had been alone for possibly well over 20 years at this point before seeing them again. it was only when they started talking about how crazy he sounded that he realized they didn't really think about if he had survived the fall or if Cinder had just killed him. you can see at the end of vol. 8 as he's running, Winter tries to reach out to him only for it to be too late

And I watered it in fears,
Night and morning with my tears:
And I sunned it with smiles,
    And with soft deceitful wiles.
And it grew, both day and night.
    Till it bore an apple bright;
And my foe beheld it shine,

This is incredible. I have taken my hand at analyzing their relationship before, and based on this last chapter, but I did not go as deep or as meta-analyzing every detail as you've done here. I can't believe that I missed so many parts. Even from the start, Ruby and Jaune were, in Lindsay's words, "two sides of the same coin". Your explanation of their parallel paths and the idea and ideals of Destiny was inspired. I need to rewatch the series from the start and look out for these details.
You almost brought me to tears (again) upon reflecting on their relationship, I didn't pick up on each trying to hurt one another, but it makes so much sense. Ruby knew exactly what to say to drive that arrow deeper into Jaune, mocking everything he had done for the past decade or so. Jaune, in turn, knew how to twist the knife towards Ruby. Blaming her for their failed plan. Each one's guilt very clear in their words and reactions. Ruby seemed to want Jaune to react in this manner and blame her, but at the same time, it seems as if she wanted him to comfort her, as he did in Kuroyuri. I didn't even consider that his reaction would cause Ruby to doubt Jaune's past sincerity at Kuroyuri, but it likely did. That is tragic and makes this situation tenfold more sad.

Its also depressing because they're the exact person who can fix the others issue if only the other person wasn't mentally breaking themselves. Ruby needs someone to lean on, to take the weight of leadership that is overwhelming her. We have seen Jaune do that in the past and he's willing to step up and hold that weight, to make the tough calls when Ruby cannot. Even when around others who would theoretically fill that niche better like Ozpin or Qrow, its Jaune that she relys on when she feels overwhelmed, because even without her asking for it he will throw himself into a task to help others. She needs that hand to pull her up behind his shield and lift for her so she can regain her footing.
Jaune needs someone to believe in him, to pull him back to his feet. Even if Ruby isn't overtly checking on his mental state before v9, she's relying on him to fulfill tasks which makes him feel useful, like he's providing something to the party. Jaune is a person who at one point basically all but yells out in the Cinder fight that he's basically just thwre to be another body to throw at the problem. Despite his front, he's often the one who struggle to see his own worth, and Ruby's constant use of him as both moral support, another leader to bounce ideas off of, or in actually making use of the martial skills he has (Jaune isn't the most skilled but he's insanely tough, pretty physically strong, and isn't afraid to take a hit, all useful skills to have when the party lacks more tanky fighters). In his broken state, he needs Ruby's fauth in him to make up for his lack of faith in himself (Ruby thinks I'm useful so I have to be useful even if I don't see it myself).
Both basically instinctively reached out for the support the other gives subconsciously and found nothing there which is the breaking point. If either was in a better state they would be able to provide the aid the other needs perfectly, like they have so many times before. But they're not so they both shatter even further, feeding into each other's spirals unknowingly until it all comes tumbling down.

Now I love my friends dearly, they're a second family to me. I think Ruby and Jaune Definitions of Destiny are flipped actually. We're made to ASSUME Jaune never would have made it and Ruby was Destined from Birth. Looking back now, knowing what we know about Ozpin and everything. I think Ozpin KNEW Jaune was Destined to be a hero from the very beginning. Possibly having been Lewis in the Ever After. Ruby he just saw potential in. And because of this and being brought to Beacon too early Ruby is failing. We've seen from the very beginning that despite wanting to help she KEEPS losing. None of her plans work. But because everyone THINKS she's this Destined Hero she has this pressure on her that is making EVERYTHING so much WORSE! Every lose, every failure. She's struggling with the weight of this supposed Destiny when in reality she's just trying her best to be what everyone sees in her. What she grew up reading about. Jaune on the other hand, started off badly but he's showed significant progress and his plans tend to work out. When he has the time to carry them out.

But instead they hurt each other from going too far that they need time apart. Jaune & Ruby need each other to bring out their best, which I am sure they will find out since Blake & Yang needed each other too.

I have wondered why JNPR almost seem as central to the story as the title characters at times. I figured it was either to show RWBY need friends to reach final victory or to demonstrate consequences of failure. The writers cannot kill off a member of RWBY. But they make RWBY watch a team on the same journey suffer and die for confronting Salem and failing.
Funnily enough what really stood out to me the most was , "it's not about if someone was right or wrong." Thank you for saying it. I have seen so many stupid arguments for Team Ruby/Team Jaune the last few days.

Another possible foil is their parents expectations of their career:
The way you talk about Ruby's destiny reminds me of how it's implied in Red Like Roses II that Summer never wanted Ruby to be a huntress. And considering everything that has happened to her, we know why now.
Jaunes parents on the other hand didn't have much faith in him to begin with. They assumed he'd fail. And in a certain point of view, his own specifically, he did.
Ruby's mother never wanted her to bare the burden of a huntress. She'd be good at it, but it at what cost? Jaune's parents never thought he was fit to be a huntsman. He'd eventually fail and possibly live with the shame. Their very lineage had negative views on their decisions that, so far, turned out to be true. Only time will tell if they can still prove them wrong or overcome that fact.

this is an excellent video !! you did such a good job analysing the foil dynamic between these two. I especially loved how you went into destiny as a theme and how RWBY explores it through two schools of thought, both of which question whether or not a person has free will (determinism shenanigans). it made me think more about penny as a character and what she meant to them both through the lens of this theme, and although I definitely think she represents hope I also think she represents innocence. both ruby and jaune have experienced a loss of innocence, except jaune’s came as a result of his own free will (he kills penny himself, or in this case “hope” and “innocence”) whereas ruby has it forcibly taken from her. she had no choice. and it’s interesting because looking at V9 and how ruby and jaune evolved, it’s clear they’ve become disillusioned by their own philosophies and have had some kind of role reversal as a result. after killing his own innocence, jaune (literally) grew old and fulfilled a destiny he didn’t even know he had (the rusted knight) and has taken on the burden of it. meanwhile ruby is starting to reject her preordained “destiny” of being a hero, to the point where she even wonders if she has to be “ruby rose” anymore. but ultimately, they both think too much in black and white terms, never seeing the nuance that exists between these philosophies and always placing the blame on themselves. it’s no wonder they blew up at each other
but anyway those are just my thoughts! thanks again for making the video, it was really well made

She knows a lot about the Ascension thing works, which is a possible reason why Neo had gotten powerful because when she crash-landed, she may have snapped her neck. So, in a future episode, there is a possibility of Ruby wanting to commit suicide within that land to improve herself.
    She is that broken.
Yes, I copy and paste my comments. It's easier that way.

Damn, just damn. Ruby and Jaune have a lot more in common than I thought. Kudos on the analysis.
I hope these two reconcile and become the heroes they always wanted to be. Even the heroes need saving.
I also hope Penny, someway somehow, comes back to life or at least as a spirit to reveal the whole story about what happened to her while apologizing to her and Jaune for leaving them again, for not listening to them and for what she made Jaune do. That way it reveals Penny DID actually regret her actions as well as giving Ruby and Jaune closure.
10 lien (That's RWBY currency, BTW) says Little is Penny "ascended".

I dropped RWBY after volume 6 because I couldn't handle the writing anymore. I was so focused on any character other than Jaune and Ruby that I'd just dropped it because I didn't care anymore.
Your video helped me realize that, despite the extensive cast and the jumping attention between characters, that I can still enjoy just one thing. I've loved Jaune and Ruby's relationship from the very beginning of the show, and it was remiss of me to forget that because a room of writers didn't take _everything_ in the story to their fullest potential, or didn't go down a route _I_ would have preferred.
There's plenty of media out there that I enjoy still, despite not agreeing with some of the messages or routes taken, because of a character, plot device, or relationship between characters.
I'll pick RWBY back up now. Thanks for focusing on the positives of the narrative, and for not making light of the recent, *_ahem_* , memes.

This is why I ship them. Because through it all they've been together and they understand each other perfectly. Oscar and Ruby are pretty much just an attraction. He doesn't know Ruby and he's not on an intimate level like Ruby and Jaune are. Like minded souls make the best couples. And you just don't get that with Oscar.

Personally, I think Jaune might sacrifice himself to the tree so team Rwby can leave the everafter, which would be very heartbreaking. He failed at every turn to be a hero, suffered loss after loss, and, in the end, performed one successful act of heroism as a broken, worn down martyr.
...I made myself really sad just now

Jaune and Ruby are the deuteragonists of RWBY as the show seems built around them even if they may not be the main focus of episodes sometimes. Even though the show is called RWBY, Weiss, Blake, and Yang act more as supporting protagonists, but are not the main ones if that makes sense.
I feel like everyone has felt like Jaune or Ruby before. You either vent and blame yourself or you repress your emotions and thoughts until they mentally exhaust you.

Hey Joe! This entire volume I've been waiting to hear your thoughts. Why just now bro? Why?!
Anywho, I've always liked the way you highlighted the things most people would've glossed over. Especially with this video. I've always known Ruby and Jaune were foils to eachother, but only now did I see just how much.
How you broke down their argument and summed it up with how Ruby and Jaune knew each other so well and so knew how to hurt each other the most, mmm *Chef's Kiss*. Lovely. Never would have noticed that.
Sadly I was sat more on the fact they fought and why, but not the depth of it.
Thanks for this. The scene hits harder now. Hahaha!

The weakest part of RWBYs story telling is literally team RWBY. There's zero chemistry between the four girls but somehow we're supposed to cheer and support them 😂 Jaune and Ruby have a better on screen chemistry than anyone else in the story, and somehow it works any way you look at it. Friends? Yes. Siblings? Better than Yang and Ruby at least. You can even say their relationship is romantic, too. But yes, team RWBY is the focus.

this is exactly why i think volume 10 is gonna be so important. i know it's probably not gonna happen and that the show has taken too many hits to the point where v10 is more unlikely than not, but i feel like there's so much more to be said for ruby and jaune's relationship. leaving them in shambles like this feels so wrong and i think there's more expanding left to do in order for them to either reconcile or things change entirely (for better or for worse). if v10 is the last one, so be it, but it needs to end the show in a way that makes enough sense, not only overall but in regards to jaune and ruby

This episode seems to be pulling together all the little story threads I felt were loose for so long. Ruby being unsure but always optimistic after so long, it felt believable that she would finally break after all that stress. And poor Juane going crazy after not having anyone help him through his trauma for years. So seeing them take their anger out in each other hurt to watch. I even speculated after episode 6 Ruby was gonna say something about being upset that her team seems to be totally fine. But I didn’t expect her to be so bitter toward her sister and Blake the way she did. Like wow

Right from V1, Jaune and Ruby's platonic relationship has been my favourite 2 person relationship in the series. I've loved the beats of V9 but not how the writers got there, but this video made me realise I might be too tunnel visioned in what I'm dissatisfied with. You've haven't me confidence, but also heartbreak because I don't see Jaune making it out of this and getting back to Remnant.
I really want him to see Nora and Ren one more time at least.

Beautifully well said ☺️, Ruby and Jaune are my favorite characters of the series they have potential to develop into great characters and admittedly I’m kinda a shipper for them too 😊, they compliment each other so well I’m surprised that people don’t see it, they only see what they want that they gave Jaune so much hate and only like him for Arkos 😔. I’m really hoping they have an emotional forgiveness moment and that Jaune returns to normal age ( he deserves to grow up with his friends and family to get heal by them and not be alone 🥺)
