    Hi Chris, from what others have said (using the OVF focusing) - if you place an AF point on your subject to begin with, it locks on and won't let go, wherever that subject moves (as long as the subject remains within the AF points, obviously).
    I'm wondering if you're not used DSLR focusing systems any more, because in honesty, I can get better focusing results from an 80D than you showed with the 1DXiii and they're world's apart in focusing abilities. I shoot tons of bursts of joggers and cyclists and I don't get out of focus shots and sometimes they even momentarily disappear behind an object, but 8 have the camera set up to pause for a moment if the subject is lost. I bet you'll get great results once you have more time with the camera. Gordon Laing had no issues with the AF keeping up with formula 1 cars. The normal DSLR AF was far better at tracking fast moving cars than the DPAF.

    • @niccollsvideo
      @niccollsvideo 4 роки тому +2

      That IS exactly how it works and it did try it's best to follow and track just as you describe it and it DID sometimes lose track. I have to reserve judgement until we have a full unit to play with and we will push it.

    Ill keep rolling with my Pentax Spotmatic II. It has some features with which the 1DXIII cannot compete. I can use film with the Spotmatic. Thats a big plus for me as I only use film. The Spotmatic is M42 mount so I can use my vintage lenses without an adapter. What I love most about my Spotmatic is that it does not have a distracting LCD display. That saves on battery life. In fact, with my Spotmatic, I dont even need a battery to shoot. Just a few things that Canon can work on for the Mark IV.

    The last couple of years I've always said that mirrorless will be the way to go - you don't have to be a prophet to see that - but it will take some time until they are able to replace the DSLR. I don't think that anymore. I think the 1DX3 could have been a mirrorless camera if only canon would have enough native glass yet. I also think it could be the last but one pro DSLR from Canon. The last beeing the 5D5.
    I myself have currently both systems at hand cuz I haven't sold any DSLR gear when giving the EOS R a try, but despite all the flaws of the EOS R I hardly find myself picking up one of my DSLRs. Even for action. The framerate might be crap, but the tracking, the eye AF and the keeper rate is awesome.

    Any answers to these two questions:
    - How is the rolling shutter? As bad a the EOS R or closer to C200/C500II?
    - Is there anyway to sync timecode through any of the ports? That's one of the best features of the S1H over the other mirrorless/dslr competition (and the reason it got Netflix approved, a long with the All-I 10-bit 422 4K).

    Wait a minute - let me get this straight. Every time you scroll your thumb over the AF-ON button it changes the point of focus? On the 5D3, it only changes position if you hit the M-Fn button first. You're saying that with the 1DX3, you do not unlock the AF position first to then move the point of focus with the new toggle AF? That it is always unlocked?

    Good job, the Canon representative told me on the Live View LCD mode you get 20 FPS vs 16 FPS thru view finder. This was during the CES 2020 in Las Vegas that just ended. This could be the most robust and durable of the pro camera that can shoot 20 FPS. Unfortunately no articulating screen and so when shooting in LCD Live View mode the camera could be a little awkward in a fast pace fashion shoot. The eye focusing is much better than the EOS-R but not quite Sony level, could be the new processor.

  • @krazyfrog
    @krazyfrog 4 роки тому

    Chris, HEIF does not necessarily mean the images are HDR. It's just an image format like any other but with better image compression and support for animation. You don't need special displays to view these files. HDR displays are meant for HDR video, which is a different standard entirely with different EOTF. It's not meant for images and images don't support this standard. This was wrong and misleading when you guys said it in the iPhone video and it is still wrong and misleading. The iPhone captures wider dynamic range by image stacking and the files are still standard dynamic range but using tone mapping to compress all the visual data into an SDR file.
    To Canon's credit, they are actually using the higher compression afforded by HEIF to increase bit depth to 10-bit and also capture wider dynamic range but these still aren't HDR. HDR is a video standard only.

    • @thatjordandrake
      @thatjordandrake 4 роки тому

      If you display HEIF files on an HDR display (that is programmed to accept the file type), you will see additional highlight that an SDR cannot display. Sure, you can view HEIF files on an SDR display, and edit some of the highlight information back into the final image, but if you just shoot and playback on a compatible device, you will get an image with greater than SDR dynamic range. Also known as HDR.

    • @krazyfrog
      @krazyfrog 4 роки тому

      @@thatjordandrake I just went through the whitepaper released by Canon for the camera and they indeed mention that the HEIF images from this camera use an HDR PQ for encoding the files with higher dynamic range that specifically require an HDR display to view, so I was wrong about that. I still don't think HEIF files from the iPhone do this, however.

    Holy Smokes! It looks like it REALLY was cold in Calgary this past week (up to Jan 6, 2020) and it also looks like the NEW Canon 1Dx3 Camera CAN take the extreme Canadian Cold and some hard knocks! That bodes well for general sports/action use! The C-Log for 10-bit+ video is great for videographers and the Deep Learning autofocus is great for Sports/Action photographers.
    It looks like it has all the features people want in Ful Frame camera systems and the ONLY THING Canon NEEDS to do now for new hardware is to bring out a MEDIUM FORMAT MIRRORLESS Camera in the same body-style and having the same ruggedness and weather sealing as the 1Dx3 but with a 65mm 50+ megapixel SGLOBAL SHUTTER SENSOR shooting at 16-bits per colour channel (i.e. 48-bit RGBA/YCbCr pixels) with 30+ fps burst rate to dual CF-express cards AND having Super-Low-Light-Sensitivity for almost NO NOISE at ISO 12,800 to ISO 25,600 !!!
    THEN Canon would TRULY HAVE the ultimate PREMIUM MONSTER of a Medium Format Pro Sports/Action/Wildlife/Landscape camera!
    Have at it Canon!
    NOW bring us that 65mm Sensor MONSTER Medium Format Camera !!!

    Battery 10.8V nominal (12.6V max 4.2V per cell), USB voltages 5V.
    It's easy to drop voltage and maintain a high current through the conversion, but not so much when boosting voltages.
    Typical lithium cell charge amperages is 500ma (slow) to 1A (fast), this maintains regardless of voltage of the battery pack as the pack for this is a 3 cell series battery pack.
    While it's technically possible to boost 5V up to 12V at 500ma to 1A, the circuitry is quite large for such a high current and it will produce substantial heat even at 500ma. many usb charge camera's either run on a single cell voltage (4.2v) or have a small battery that will charge in a few hours with just a couple of hundred milli amps (much smaller circuitry).
    Charging higher voltage packs with high capacity batteries via USB, not a good idea generally unless you have some specific kit that has an adequate boost converter for using with 2A+ power banks.
    They could probably add a small slow usb charger to these cameras, but then they'll be condemned as being too slow and virtually useless by reviewers as it'll take 14-18 hours to charge one 2700mah battery @~200ma.

      Sorry for the long reply but I'm trying to cover the bases as to why it's not really much of a benefit to have in camera usb charging in camera's like the 1DX due to the capacity of the batteries.
      Still requires a port capable of delivering 20V for 20V negotiation.
      This means that you cant just plug into any old usb port and have it work.
      A lot of phones have a USB-C data and charging, yet those still plug into usb type A chargers limited to 5V. You won't be able to use a phone charger with USB type C to charge your battery., still requires a separate charger.
      Sure it can be done with a type C wall charger designed for 20V (but isn't the point to get away from the wall), but it will require special power banks built to deliver 20V and not what most people are carrying around with them which are 5V. For comparison a 20V 4000Mah (@20V) 80WH battery pack is 600-650g and larger than most dual battery dual voltage (wall and car) chargers. You can plug a car charger into a solar panel, but for the 1DX battery you'd probably want a 12W panel per battery @1A (3 hour charge) or a 6W panel for 500ma (5-6 hour charge) making sure that the panel can output the correct voltage (20V regulated down), but that's more stuff to carry and those wattages even folded aren't pocket size.
      If you have to plug into the wall, then USB in camera charging is only a convenience for people who don't change their batteries (and don't carry spares) which is outside of the target market for this camera. The USB-C charge units are all the size of a 90W power brick (go figure?), just go look at the usb-c 60-100W chargers for size comparisons. USB type C charging doesn't solve the problem that the convenience of USB charging eliminates, which is the need to bring a wall socket charger unit when you're travelling. The solution for that is the ubiquitous 12V car charging units and swapping your batteries as required.
      Just plugging into your macbook and draining its battery power will leave your macbook without much left. The canon 1DX battery is 2700mah (30WH) and the macbook pro's battery is 100WH, doing the conversion you could maybe charge a battery three times theoretically (with perfect conversion) but realistically after 1 charge your macbook pro's battery will be down to 50% and you'll soon be looking for that wall to plug into.
      If you look at the current USB charging camera's their batteries are at biggest 7.2V (8.4) and 1025mah , converting to watt hours that's roughly 7.4WH or about 1/4 the capacity of the 2700Mah 10.8V 29.16WH 1DX battery most are half that (3.6V 1050mah 3.8WH)
      Oh and just for laughs, 20000Mah 20V power banks for your laptop, can't fully charge your selected laptop (100WH) as the 20000Mah is rated at 3.6V which gives you a total capacity of 72WH or 3600Mah@20V, which is 3/4 of that 16" macbook pro's capacity. Oh and for those paying attention, we can regulate the 20V output of those power banks to suit a 12V car charger and some of those chargers self regulate from 12-24V input.
      There's no ideal solution for usb charging such large capacity batteries away from the wall and at the wall the battery chargers are no bigger than what a USB charger would need to be.

      You're using a wall charger, the canon usb charger is also a wall charger.
      Both those chargers are 5V or 9V and do not do 20V.
      These are custom jobs using USB type C plug @ 9V to fast charge a 7.2V (8.4V) battery at fast charge rates.
      9V is not official USB type C spec, you could not charge a laptop with those, even slowly.
      Neither could charge up the 10.8V (12.6) 1DX battery.
      The battery in the EOS-R (LP-E6N) is 1850Mah @ 7.2V or 14WH or half the capacity of the 1DX Battery (LP-E19).
      The size of the USB charger is similar to that of the battery charger.

      Don't need much more than 20 for sports. Plus less megapixels means larger actual pixels which means better low light / high iso performance thus better in badly lit or the need for high shutter speeds.
      Don't need an insane amount of megapixels anyway.
