- Renovation work continues this week at the homestead on our little stone home. After weeks of prep, the ring beam formwork has been constructed, rebar added & it's ready to receive some concrete!
But as we continue to battle with Portugal's toasty summer weather, maybe our eyes are too big for our bellies & our ambitious goal of getting the old house ring beam poured in one day is just too much? Join us to find out how it turned out!

How delightful to have fresh, ripe figs right there! Instead of buying less-than-fresh ones twice a year at the store. My parents had a brown turkey fig tree in Arizona, and when figs are ripe, I can’t imagine a better breakfast (along with yogurt and coffee, just like James Bond in From Russia with Love!)!
Ricky you sound like, at times, your doubting yourself. DON'T ! You and Victoria are doing an outstanding job. Plus your coming up with unique ways to overcome the cost like the vibrator for the concrete. Ingenious idea to use the sawzall. So far it is looking good and hope everything goes exactly as planned. Vicky those figs are enormous and beautiful. I made fig preserves and syrup last year and it was fantastic. Good luck on continuing the build.

A solution to the sawdust may be to use a plumbing pipe angle that could fit inside the end of the saw's exhaust. That way it would shoot the sawdust to the side not as a direct path to you. Covering the moistened hessian with plastic to hold in the moisture could help slow the drying of the concrete.

Sheeesh! I can’t wrap my mind around how you’re figuring this all out but those rebar forms you made are fantastic. The other part is doing all of that in hellish heat. I hope you get to go into that plunge pool often. This cottage is going to be amazing. Hugs to the pups 💕

I did a small house build in South Spain where we live now...I welded our ring beam joints. Never moved

Not bad. I recommendation regarding concrete mixing: when mix it in mixer, first water, second cement, third aggregates. When mixing by shovel: mix aggregates with cement, then add water. Good luck.

We always encouraged our painters to get their shirts and hat wet in extreme heat, it really makes a difference. even a wet neck wrap.

I helped a friend recently on a similar project using my gasless mig welder running off his generator to weld the corner right angle bars. The welding gave it a lot more integrity.
Good effort getting as much done as you did under the circumstances. Keep moving forward 😊
Welding is a skill that I really want to learn next year!

I can’t believe how much work you have both accomplished in such a short amount of time! My deceased husband and I carried concrete all around our in ground pool 30 yrs ago in a wheel barrel & spread it. It was a huge job & afterwards I would have pd to have it done because concrete work is very hard on the body! I can’t imagine doing it up high on a roof. I thought you guys were having it delivered ….God Bless You both 😮!🙏🙏🙏
