Hiking the Most DANGEROUS Path to the Top of Wales | Climbing Crib Goch, Snowdon Solo

  • Crib Goch is Great Britain's infamous knife edge ridge and a possible route to take when climbing to the summit of Mount Snowdon in Snowdonia National Park ⛰
    The highest point of Crib Goch is 923m and is classified as a Grade 1 scramble! This was my 6th time to the summit of Snowdon and 2nd time traversing Crib Goch and is by far my favourite route because of the knee trembling ridge walk 😅 (love a dose of adrenalin!)
    Be prepared for this route and check the weather ☀️

    did this in my early 20's and remember thinking that it wasn't so bad. Fast forward 35 years and went up the Rhyd Ddu path with my 20 year old son - I felt that my chest was going to burst and had to turn around when I got to the ridge because it scared the hell outta me (my son went merrily on his way). Exciting venture on an iconic route.
    Wide angle lens exaggerates the visual impact of the height and exposure but it's still a monster view up there.
    In dry weather, CG's pretty straightforward; it's the sheer exhiliration of the constant 360 degree exposure which can take away some people's nerve.
    Check out the Welsh pronunciation of 'goch'.
    If you don't live near Snowdonia, stay overnight so that you don't put pressure on yourself to risk low light at the end of your hike.

    I still want to try Crib Goch but at 70 years old with arthritis and sciatica I worry that the exertion of getting up on to the ridge would leave me too knackered to get across safely. Also, if I do attempt it, I would have to be starting at first light so I would have all day to get across and back down again with plenty of time. I would hate to be racing against the dark. I could not believe it when you started and and its 3.30pm, I would be expecting to be heading down at that time. Well done kidda.

      I guess it’s all relative and depends what your experience is! I’m sure the scramble could taken on by most fit people confident in their ability but the knife does have serious consequences if you fall either side! ⛰️ Also UK has limited mountains so this is pretty extreme as far as UK hikes go I guess! 🙌🏼

      @@MorewithMat Thank you for responding. Me and my wife are avid rope climbers and would like to walk over the ridges, it is just very hard to judge by videos how dangerous this particular route is.
      If you have time to respond, would you recommend some other ridges worth exploring that are beautiful as well?

    • @MorewithMat
      @MorewithMat  10 місяців тому +1

      @@MartinDlabaja no worries at all! Yes if you have experience on the mountains and it’s not high winds/wet I’m sure it would be manageable for you! Even if you don’t want to climb over the pinnacles there’s option to go around. And at the end of the day if it goes beyond what you are comfortable with you can just turn around ⛰️
      I haven’t done lots and lots of the ridges around to be honest. I am based in Essex and a long way from anything remotely mountainous 😂 So trips are unfortunately few and far between 👎🏼 Tryfan north ridge is challenging, could be a good one to consider!

    " near vertical drops on either side" what are u on about. Its a grade 1 scramble, and an easy one at that. Bristly ridge and Tryfan north ridge are harder in the park. Ive done crib 5 or 6 times, once with my dog. These videos always make it look worse due to the camera lens used. Go and do a video on the Cuillin Ridge

    • @MorewithMat
      @MorewithMat  10 місяців тому +3

      I don’t think that’s a bad description for this hike, especially in some sections! Yeh I’ve done Tryfan a few years back! Not heard of Bristly and Cuillin ridge but will check them out! 🙌🏼 Congrats on completing it 5/6 times that’s awesome! This was my second times, few more in the future! ⛰️

      @MorewithMat think one part of the pinnacles has a big drop on it. The ridge itself, which isn't very long, doesn't have a steep drop on the left if heading from Pen y pass. Yes it is steep on the right but if u keep to the left it's fine. The Cuillin Ridge takes 2 days with a bivvy out on the ridge. Took me 20 hours of actual climbing and walking. It's the biggest mountaineering challenge in the UK

      @MorewithMat unless ur experienced and very organised don't do it without a guide. Route finding is absolutely crucial. And u'll need to stash food and water on the ridge. As u need a lot for 2 days and there's no natural water on the ridge. The ridge is 12km long

      @@robmckinley5475 id like to think I’d be able to take it on, whether I could or not is another question! 😂 Maybe I’ll look into it and do a few milder ones first! Sounds pretty hardcore! 🙌🏼⛰️
