    Several options:
    - switch to a different game system like Grimdark Firefight
    - keep playing the previous edition
    - wait until they release the proper lists (ie: ones like the Krieg and Kommandos) for each faction and use those
    - wait to see if they add mixed kill teams / points in a future General’s Handbook style release
The thought of cutting up finished models makes me wince, especially when the Compendium is just a stop gap.

Second that. You might play the old version again at some point and just bite the Bullet, or as I see it in my Case, cease the opportunity to build some new Teams tailored for the new rules. You probably have enough plastic crack laying around to build something or use the chance to maybe build something new which might be a new challenge. Don't get so down about it Uncle Atom 😁 You can crank out something cool, I know it 👍

Yeah, especially because some of those rules ARE going to change again when they expand the new Veteran/Kommando style teams. Until then, I would keep the existing models as is and just expand them as necessary into full rosters. For example, Uncle Atom's Necrons are all still part of a legal roster, they just don't make a complete kill team. I would keep all of those models and just work toward expanding each type into legal fire teams, starting with the ones I'm most eager to play with.

@@dillonrinehart8319 Correct. The biggest value of a published rule system is its commonality. When they publish a newer version, they take away a lot of the value of the old one. This is hopefully not an issue because the new version is so good, you are happy.
When they pull this crud where they offer up a half finished new version that intentionally is set up to force new model purchases, they are taking your old value in a big way without really giving you the goodness of a new version. And, let’s say your faction doesn’t get a new codex in the first year. Gratz, the next update will likely push it into the closet again, so you got a fraction of its value simply robbed from you. (Puhleeeez, do not argue the generic or proxy solution, not only is that sad, if it’s good enough, why buy the codex?).

My personal recommendation is: play a game that isn't so restrictive, like Grimdark Future: Firefight from One Page Rules. It's a free ruleset, so you have no reason not to try it.
For anyone who is dead set on playing GW's games, I suggest holding off on jumping to the newest Kill Team edition until whenever expanded rules for your preferred faction come out. Hoping that those rules are more permissive about what you're allowed to bring. Assuming this current book is the "Get You By" army lists, and GW do put out the "proper" rules later.
Better yet, don't switch to the new edition at all. If you've already got functioning Kill Team books, why should you even bother updating? You'd only need to if you were planning on buying new Kill Teams that aren't covered in the existing rules.

Sounds like a lot of those teams can be salvaged by adding one or two extra models. Since the new Kill Team uses a 20 model roster that you draw from then you should have some flexibility.

I got into Kill Team right before they announced this new version and I was in the process of building a Space Wolves team and had this wild idea that I was going to make a few of them Bladeguard Veterans but "shield maidens". Ya know, viking stuff. Then this new edition came out, kinda nuked that idea. But I was already neck deep in doing some heavy conversions to the Bladeguard vets I'd gotten in the Indomitus box. Ground off some of the Indomitus crosses, glued on female heads from AoS Eternals, a few select pieces trimmed and even melted from a space wolves upgrade sprue. The whole 9 yards.
So now, that model is a Death Watch sergeant and I bought a Death Watch kill team box for the rest. Sure, she's technically a Primaris model. Ok fine, my leader is a bit taller than the other guys. And yes, the sculpt has a pistol on the belt... thats just "decoration" now. Kinda like all the Death Watch models themselves have knives on their belt but dont actually get combat knives. I imagine this is fine.

This is why all my Skitarii special weapons are on dudes with the bare, cybernetic skull heads. A lot of my combi weapons and other sergeant stuff is magnetized, or I just make spare sergeants with different loadouts. I usually try to future-proof stuff like that whenever I can. I started wargaming with KT2021 a few months ago, my first realization with the kriegs, was that i cant build all the different options from one box, and i heard that playersusually magnetize the weapon options for bigger models. So since that point i magnetized all of my 10 kriegs, (and printed a new proxy team from MMF with magnets again), built 20+ SMs with magnets (the phobos strike team models has magnetized backpack to be able to be able to change between icnu/infli/reiver), and kitbashed a GK team from Sigmarians again with magnets. now i have all the options in the world to build teams, change loadouts. With this i can play basically all my primaris marines in every possible roles just need to trade some arm bits. If a new GK or DW team is popping up in the future, i just need to grab the extra bits, and done.

Question for you Atom... With how important ROSTER building in KT21 is, compared to LIST building in KT18, have you considered just getting extra boxes to add to your current teams? Sure, you can't use for example the Frag launcher and Inferno Heavy Bolter in the same fireteam but if you have it in the roster you can pick and choose what to use depending on who you're fighting.

It's a bit like Power Level in 40k, choose whatever loadout you want, it's all the same cost; but what people actually want is BALANCE. But in this case, it's worse, because whilst we've lost balance, we've also lost choice.
Of course, as a game system, Kill Team 2.0 probably didn't generate many model sales, since players mostly used what they've already got. So, from a business point of view, selling Kill Team specific kits for 3.0 will make more money for the shareholders by forcing long term collectors to buy even more.
If the new Kill Team kits are actually new and shiny, then people might buy them. But if they're existing kits with an upgrade sprue and some rules cards, I can't see that going down well.

Back then you had to call them from the number in the back of the magazine in the middle of the night when It's day in UK and they send a box full of lead. I got a ton of original dreads with all left legs. They weren't very careful back then. I ordered with two other people with different armies. I had to learn to cut and kitbash metal minis. My first alterations were cutting half those dread legs at the knee and making them look good as right legs. I ended up with an ogrin with one leg and one arm missing. My buddy had extra legs and arms for his Ork Dreads. I made a cyborg Ogrin with the extra dread parts. I find that kitbashing is one of my favorite parts of the hobby. When everything started coming out in plastic, I found it to be so easy and had honed my skills to the point where other people used to come to me to kitbash their minis. It's easy. Just practice. Cutting up models isn't anything to be intimidated by. I've been doing a ton of that with these new monopose models to give them variety. Weapon swaps hardly even register with me anymore.

They will likely change again at some point in the future…and I don’t want to Frankenstein my existing finished models to appeal to a company who’s goal is to give existing models a shelf life so I have to buy new models to keep up with trends.

I had been excited about this new version of Kill Team, but as things unfolded, it started to look more and more like a pile of books I'd need to buy that I really don't want to spend the money on. So right now, if I were playing KT'21, I'd be buying the core book and compendium - $86ish for both books (just did a shopping search, it is potentially cheaper elsewhere) to just look under the hood and take it for a test drive.
Okay, it will be fun and I'll get a lot of hours out of it, so maybe it is worth it.
But the compendium doesn't have Elites and Commanders. It has just the basic troops. We are gaslighting ourselves if we think GW isn't going to put out at least 2 more compendiums at 40 bucks each.

I've decided to make the models from my old kill teams "Sergents" for their own squads. That way the leader is very unique, and stands out, and I also don't have to break off bits. It also helps explain why they are painted a little different. "After many successful operations, each member was given their own squad to lead in covert missions." It's how I'm making it work.....but hate that I have to do something like that in the first place to keep (some of) the models I put so much time into playable.

I have been screwed for so many years from GW I started magnatizing all my models since the time I converted 30 Black Templars to storm shield and Chainsword then having to cut them all off and put bolt pistols back on a few months later. . .
The other option is to have more models than you need for you kill team, a back bench as you will where you keep both your Grey Knight heavy weapons and just add more models then you can just swap models and team composition to suit future changes . .
Most of my Kill teams have around 5 extra models that I keep painted up and just change it up when I feel like it or fancy a slight change withing the team.

In that situation, I'd add new models to my kill teams to make them legit.
In a similar kind of issue, do not forget Warhammer battle players who had to switch from square bases to round bases 4 years ago just to learn that their armies will not be legit in the next 'oldworld' version of the game switching back to square bases :(

This is whats so frustrating about this whole thing. Its our hobby, GW just sells stuff for it. We have brains that come with imaginations, can't we just rules-bash or mod the rules to actually work? I'm more of a painter than a player but playing seems so depressing to me. It just seems crazy that teams that make sense can be "illegal".
I wish someone would create a "Warhammer Forever," type rule-set where stuff from all additions can be plugged in and made to function.
IDK, playing Warhammer 40K just seems so lame. Its like so many people sound like they are being held hostage, its really weird.

As a Tau player who magnetizes a lot of my bigger options, I don't advise magnetizing infantry. It adds a lot of prep time to games as you need to root through your bitsbox which feels weird in kill team. It also adds lots of small bits that are easy to lose or (in the case of infantry) break.

It can be really hard to realize your models aren’t “current”. However if things don’t change we would never get to have new experiences and find new joys.
It may be that this edition won’t be the greatest. But as you yourself said “they can’t all be zingers”. I feel on a whole GW has made a lot of improvements over the last few years no? On the other hand this could become a wonderful edition with new experiences.

I feel like it's DELIGHTFULLY easy to start over, especially with Astartes. Infiltrators are clearly awesome, the models are awesome and you can make a fireteam of Infiltrators and one of Incursors from a single box. That's a positive.

  • @YoGramGram1

I bought the Tau Pathfinders box when Killteam first came out and it was perfect. Ten pathfinders (one being the "sarge") and then three drones. Now, out of those thirteen models, I can only use seven max, and only one can have a heavy weapon. My force in Killteam 2.0 by default has so much depth and naunce with different weapons and now kill team just feels like running 5-8 generic infantry soldiers against each other. The rule changes were great, but it doesn't mean anything when the roster creation is absolutely kneecapped beyond recognition.
The point of warhammer is getting to be nitty gritty with your squad/army creation and this moved away from the "soul" of warhammer. I understand they might want the rules to be this way as a proper gateway game for a more complex 40k, but I feel as if new players want to be able to obsess, care, and nuture 5-10 models just as much as a veterans obsess, care, and nuture 100 model armies. Probably going to kitbash the roster rules from 2.0 and the ruleset from 3.0 and just not play this version in stores for the time being (pandemic is still going on so I guess it's a good deterrent anyways, thanks GW).

I love it when you show pictures of your painted models: they look amazing, despite the fact that you don't go in for much edge highlighting, thus giving hope to those of us out here who find that technique almost impossible to pull off well, or within a reasonable time frame (i.e. a squad takes 2 months to complete! 😖) If you could make some more videos about painting minis "Atom-style," I, for one, would be very excited! 😁 Anyway, thanks for all the fantastic content; long may you reign!
