      I see a lot of posts on Reddit about parents and their kids playing OPR as an introduction to the wargaming world. Its really cool that you can make the game play as simple or complicated as you feel comfortable with.
      With the next generation of wargamers coming up; GW seems to be forgetting an entire target audience (and their parent's money).
      OPR seems way more content-oriented vs. money-oriented, and that is likely one reason it is gaining more traction.

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 Рік тому +24

      @@kingodacheez3416 Another reason why OPR resonates with a larger audience is that, in a way GW games don't, it _respects your time._ Both in the sense that games are much faster to learn and play, and in the sense that you don't need to make "keeping up with the game" a second job. OPR's rules don't change every few weeks, you don't need to buy and read books on a monthly basis. You aren't juggling points costs against Detachments and Stratagems and Relics and Warlord Traits. You can just pick up the rules sheet and your current list, and start playing.

      @@Bluecho4 They kinda do. I tried playing sisters of battle in OPR, then the next update gave them space marine terminators and librarians for some reason. OK, cool, fine, librarians completely break their fluff but maybe it's some sort of saint or something but I am puzzled what models we're supposed to use for these. Buy actual space marine terminators? Then the next update came out and now terminators are 3 models instead of 5 and armed with two power claws instead of power fist and bolter as default gear - wot? If GW turned the unit loadouts, sizes, and points upside down each update there would be no end of complains, yet OPR does it constantly making it kinda hard to build army. Then there is the fact all sister tanks are horrifically overpriced in points (besides armed transport which is very cheap for its guns for some reason) pretty much forcing you to build all infantry army unless you want to be THAT GUY then it's the (empty) transports swarm armed with three heavy flamers each to trip up usual army composition...

    • @travelminipainter
      @travelminipainter Рік тому +12

      @@KuK137 The thing is, that OPR is miniature agnostic... Difficult to get your head around when you come from the GW way of doing things.
      You don't HAVE to use the army books provided by OPR, but can make your own adjusted to the models you have, with the army-builder, which makes army building a totally personal thing. But you have to detach yourself from the way that GW wants you to think by indoctrinating the community, by using their codeces or battletomes to sell more models.
      Just built your own tailormade army with the army-builder and use whatever models you want! You don't want to use librarians, because they brake the fluff in your opinion. Don't. And BTW, OPR is creating their own universe and their own fluff, so the factions provided by OPR will most certainly differ from GW. But as I said, you can always create your own!

But even the older editions suffer from rules bloat and expansion power creep - there has never really been a point where all the armies where even in parity with each other, let alone balanced.
      And secondly, if you want to get people to play a "non-standard" version of the game, you have the hurdle of "but I need to relearn rules" to overcome. If you're going to need to do that anyway, you may as well use a more streamlined rules system that avoids the unreasonable mental overhead of a 40k game.

      Having a ready-made "product" that you can just download, that lets you get right to playing, goes a long way towards helping people into the hobby. GW has _attempted_ products in this ballpark, but in the style of a magazine subscription that sells a few models per issue and part of the game rules that teach you how to play over the course of many _months._

Not only are they more cost-efficient, they are easier to produce, color, print, replace, and store than metal/resin/plastic 3d painted miniatures. There is also plenty of room to "deluxify" them by having printed plastic sheets or acrylic with different front/back graphics.

Hands down, Saurians beat Seraphon on sculpts for a direct comparison, but most of the options are going completely unique and that's been super-neat.

    I really love the systems, especially the skirmish versions as that's my preferred play style. The great thing about it is that if you learn one version of the skirmish game, or the fully army game, you've basically learnt the other version as well as they use the same "engine" across both fantasy and sci-fi. The other great thing is that they play so quickly that you can easily get multiple games in during a single session. If you're into the 3d printing side of things then they're also one of the best value Patreons out there providing units for both fantasy and sci-fi each month, generally it takes about 3 months to get the complete army list of units, as well as fleets for their starship battle game. They also provide faction specific terrain and objectives.
    The discord and facebook groups are very active, so much so that you're unlikely to keep on top of all the different discussions that are going on. I'd highly recommend them to anyone and since I introduced it to my local club it's become one of the main games we play with a game running at least once a month.

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 Рік тому +1

      That all the games use the same "engine" is a big selling point here.
      For as many ways that they share mechanics, there's far more of GW's games that differ wildly from each other. If you liked Kill Team but want to expand to 40K, you are obligated to also learn a whole new system. And not a simple system, either. Virtually every part of GW's business model seems not only geared towards making you buy more plastic, but to take up more of your time and brain space to learn and keep up with it. Which has the cumulative effect of crowding out any other hobby you might have had in your life.
      With OPR, once you learn how the game works, you know how it works, and you can play it whenever you feel like. Even Age of Fantasy: Regiments, their rank-and-flank game, is functionally just Age of Fantasy but with simple rules for moving in blocks. It makes it easy to play.
      And isn't that just a royal indictment of GW games. They make it harder to play than it needs to be.

    I haven't had that much fun playing a tabletop game in years, nay, decades. Honestly, the old magic fever that drove me into this whole thing when I was a mere boy is there now back again. I didn't think this was even possibly.
    I'm aware that this sounds like exaggerated praise for this company, but it is how I genuinly feel. They gave me back the joy of the hobby.

    It's also the best game for teaching younger players as it's just so accessable, my son's 7-12 love it but has enough tactical dept to still engage me at 44.

    I perked up at the point you made with the leg up when you alternate unit activations. That's actually super smart and keeps the game going rather than one player waiting until the other finally moved all of his giant swarm army. And the leg up you get for going first after some of your units have been killed off is also a very interesting mechanic.

    OPR has amazing STLs in terms of quality and *quantity*. The amount of models you get each month is a steal compared to most other patreons (you get double the models basically). This past month they even included a new set of models; usually it is Lizard and Jackal/Gnoll models but this month they included demons which are great for Reign in Hell. Love their content. I have kept and still play (skirmish) with the first 40k Starter Set (Space Marines and Orcs / Gretchin) I bought back in around 1999 / 2000 (into Kill Team as well now).
    It actually has "1 page of rules of Battle " - covering the Battle basics including model stats / capabilities etc, all you need to play, with the 3 preceding pages covering miniature assembly and explanations of "movement, attack, shooting etc".
    So eady to follow and play without spending hours searching through "Warhammer Tomes" for rules etc, just a single, one-sided page to reference if needed. Quick, fun skirmish games either solo or with a friend.
    Love your many intersting videos - thanks.

    Having been a 40k player for almost 25 years.
    (Collected smurfs,nids,SoB,orks,necrons and knights and a sizeable HH mechanicum army from FW! In that time) I got sick of the bloated requirement for buying new rulebooks,codexes,mission books ect.ect.ect for every edition every 3 years or so. on top of that the price gouging gw inflict on us. Especially for FW!!
    Ive recently d/l'd the grimdark future basic rules .. and their awesome.. defo joining the patreon once my new printer arrives.. and with the money imngonna save not buying gw products new anymore will go along way to buying the occasional figs i do want 2nd hand from ebay (because credit where it's due,they do make some fantastic sculpts!)And plenty of resin for all those sweet stl's sitting on my H.drive
    And given the absolute level if gaslighting from GW over their pandering to amazon.. not a moment to soon.. bye bye GW!!
    (P.s. the my minis factory are super cheap for ready printed models as well.. about 60£ for approx 34-38 model "starter" sets of figures from their "official" figures . That absolutely blows GW's prices out of the water! ) and every month theres a different starter set of stls to grab.. thats a great starter army every month for (including resin costs )for about 25£ !!!

This page along has Rulebook, Army Books, Starter kit, Player Tools and link to the OPR Wiki (strategy guides, pictures, lore, etc.). A quick look at the other OPR games shows pretty much the same.
    I love my Slaves of Darkness army i build, but never used in an AOS game. I just refuse to purchase a rulebook, an army book and a generals handbook. Just for them to be out of date a few months later. Just because GW needs some more cash.
