Space hulks exist, as a thing in 40k in general. I don't think this'll be much more than a nod to Space Hulk, and just Kill Team as it's been lately.

which would be cool. a space hulk/zone mortalis type setting with confined corridors would make for a fun kill team setting. I can't imagine a situation where the guard enter a space hulk on their own though. elite kasrkin or not - the astartes are who they call to lead the way because anything could be inside and none of it is good.

just to say as someone who is a big lover of the fluff of 40k, the reason SPACE MARINE chapters send in the terminators is because No.1 they're the most durable unit of infantry they have but also because only the first company, the veterans, the best of the best can use terminator armour. they're the most prepared for whatever is lurking in the darkness.
however not every imperial navy unit or imperial guard force will have elite space marines on hand to go and check out a space hulk, and therefore that responsibility would fall to the imperial guard. and lets be honest, the imperium isnt shy about throwing lives away.

personally I was thinking Space Marines vs Tyranids with a Terminators vs Purestrain Genestealers box (I know we just had Space Marines but then we got Chaos twice in a row with chosen then blooded so Primaris followed by Firstborn Terminators doesn't seem too out there). honestly I couldn't care less about whatever the Imperium/good guy side is (and since one of the models is an imperium robot I'm feeling pretty certain that at least one side will be an Imperium faction) as long as the other side is Genestealers.

But they showed off a CAT, which is both not advanced enough and too Imperium to be Votann gear, they'd be using something that looks more like a Tau drone than an edgy version of a Mars rover. Tyranids are basically guaranteed to be one half ( _maybe_ Chaos Daemons as the only other monster faction) and the other is almost certainly Imperium-aligned to be bringing a CAT with them.
Unless GW thinks short people are as grotesque and monstrous as genestealers then sure, maybe

I think this is just Kill Team aboard a space hulk, which could be pretty fun and thematic in my opinion. I don't think this will have anything to do with Space Hulk the game, so hopefully that won't stop them from reprinting it. You are right though, not having Space Hulk in print seems like leaving money on the table - especially with their current model - they could put out all kinds of expansions for it (Want to play as CSM? How about Scions? How about add some GSC allies to the Stealers, etc.).

fun trivia, back in the days of Citadel Journal (late 90s-early 00s) there were rules for using Imperial Guard in Space Hulk. They automatically died when a Genestealer attacked them but iirc they could move faster than Terminators, didn't block LoS for each other, and could do fun things like set up weapons teams at intersections.

So I envision that the next two-team box set will be squats and somebody else, maybe tyranids? With the terrain being more space hulk-like, corridors etc, same 22x30 play space...
Space Hulk as we knew it will still be ignored. Leaving money on the table...
Of course I still have two copies of the 3rd edition. Sold off the terminators to a friend running blood angels and incorporated the tyranids into the army on building now. I use the corridors and doors for my own DIY games.

As for Kill Team as Space Hulk, I bought a game called Space Crusade back in the day and it was what lead me to buy the 2nd Ed 40K box set, "for the kids". The thing was, it used four cardboard tiles that could be set up any way you wanted to. They were 12" x 12" and fit the standard base size of the day for Marines. That would not need the more space hungry corridor tiles of the official GW versions of Space Hulk and would conform more closely to the Kill Team format.

  • @TimPoley
    @TimPoley 2 роки тому +2

So it's important to note that "Space Hulk" is both a game, and a setting/place/thing in the 40k universe. So in this case I'd say this is an addition/expansion of the game Kill Team but with the setting being a space hulk. No doubt it'll come with some new rules making it a bit "space hulk"ish, like what's around the next corner kind of thing, but it'll be kill team, not the game space hulk. And I suspect it won't be limited to tyranid vs. kill team of choice, but team vs team w/ tyranids being a team option (my guess the box will probably come with some tyranid models). As for the fact that a space hulk is not a suitable place for normal human troops, I suspect they'll just be assuming that the ship/hulk being used just happens to have perfectly working life support for any team that would require it. I'll be curious to see how they do the terrain, tiles like the board game would be kinda weak, so maybe wall segments that you could put together to form corridors and rooms. And to do that right, IMHO, means a lot of plastic, which means this box will probably be pretty pricey.
Agree completely that 1) Space Hulk is a great game for introducing people to the hobby 2) It's a shame, and arguably stupid, that GW doesn't do regular prints of SH to keep it on the shelves, I do so hate they're obsession with LE and 3) This will defiantly not serve as a SH replacement. Do to both complexity and I suspect price. So if GW is thinking that, well, just see statement (2) about GW being stupid.

I also assume that there will be no LoS between levels as these are supposed to be encased in a Space Hulk.

Sounds like they are just going to be taking Kill Team indoors, which could affect how certain things work in the game. Like not being able to go over a wall because there's a ceiling in the way.

Sad that you skipped mentioning the best edition of Space Hulk; 2nd edition!
It was a very refined and no nonsense version, which I think makes it the best. Easy to teach, great mix of missions, and models that are not too busy. I'm in the slow process of fix9ng up an old copy on my UA-cam channel.

Space hulk was basically a kill team deployment, this seems like the natural next step to me. Especially because you get a generic rule set that all your other teams can jump in.

Maybe yes but the old space hulk game was so much more. It was asimmetrical gameplay and playing as terminators or genestealers was a completely different experience. Not to mention the booklets with all the lore inaide and the world building.
Seems like gw has sorta given up on world building lately and kinda went "meh, if you are willing to pay 200$ you already know the lore"

When they first introduced Space Hulk, there were rules in White Dwarfor bringing a squad onto a hawk whether it was guardians, Harlequins, squats, etc. These were based on point values and you could just bring even regular space marines in regular power armor.

Space Hulk was/is amazing. Of course it's totally inspired by Aliens and better for it. I've always found it tragic that Richard Halliwell (it's sole designer) never really got enough credit for his contributions to Warhammer as a whole, since he eventually left GW to do other things. Rick Priestly is often regarded as the godfather of Warhammer, but Rich and Rick were school friends, they developed their own games together as kids and I believe it was Rich that wrote the first draft of the rules that later became Warhammer, Rick et al continued to develop it years after Halliwell had left and he seems to have become a bit of an obscure forgotten figure in later years. Unfortunately I remember reading Rich Halliwell died a few years back (only 62). Considering the guy made one of the best standalone table top wargames (Space Hulk) and the original Warhammer ruleset, I feel he definitely should have been lauded more.

@Tabletop Minions: You have a point about how deadly Space Hulks are and in theory you are right that you should only sent your best equipped troops into it. But think again from the 40K view of things - equipment is much more expansive and precious then a life there! Especially when it comes to more or less irreplaceable things like a terminator armour. So sending in some expandables is more likely - especially when your enemy can tear apart your terminator armour like paper (genestealer claws in Space Hulk).
But I share your bad feeling about burning the good name of Space hulk.

What i see is... space hulk tiles, genestealer specific space hulk style rules, space hulk style movement rules for kill team (basicaly space based rather than ruler)... all inside kill teams combat rules.
Which... might not be so bad when I think about it. At this point... another space hulk release (which I would love) might not be necessary if they are trying to get people in to kill team and 40k. Release a box, with some simplified kill team rules, some terminators and some genestealers. As I have avoided all kill team since it's recent version, for a number of reasons... I may actually buy in to that one though.
I kind of like the idea of space hulk with orks, or plague marines... not kill team in a space hulk, but just being able to change out the faction fighting the genestealers... Or as siomeone else mentioned, throw in a little space crusade feel to it as well.
In fact, the more I think of that.. the more I get excited about that idea.

The other thing about Space Crusade was that different missions focussed not just on Nids. You had the pre-cursor to Necrons, Chaos Marines with a cool Dread' model. Orks and gretchin and multiple SM teams with variable load out for weapons. It also had random event cards and was quite the fun game. So I would not see that GW would need to restrict this Kill Team to just Nids. It was released under license by the Hamlyn group.

Maybe it will be the first modular tile kill team battlefield. Airlocks to block line of sight for long corridors until some kind of opening activation. Maybe two airlocks at opposing sides of the board for team entry. I do wonder if the number of tiles, for my vision of what it could be, would be limited so the overall size of the hulk is still semi limited to the size of a traditional Killteam board for tournament purposes.

Totally agree with you. I think as its branded under kill team just being a space hulk themed battle field seem right. They may introduce elements like blips in the way the genestealer cults deploy in 40k. Blips being very space hulk thematic. Kill team may be a mix of stealers and hybrids as in the classic space hulk expansion. Its possible this could pave the way to reintroduce space hulk proper further down the line especially now they have the hybrids and GSC to mix things up a bit. Personally I would have preferred if they had gone down the route of advanced space crusade.... kill team location in a tyranid vessel to take out vital organs??? Still love space hulk in its pure form. Sorry for the ramble! Love the videos though keep up the great work.

Boarding a Tyranid vessel is something I’d love GW to explore again. I guess the only problem is a Tyranid vessel is going to be Tyranids vs X so GW might not consider it a versatile enough setting. A Space Hulk on the other hand could have anything on it and anyone could board it. But I agree a Tyranid vessel would be so cool! Really I should just make my own Tyranid vessel Kill Team board!

The way things are worded on the article leads me to think of the loot based skirmish games like Stargrave and Frostgrave. A desolate space hulk is a lot like the concept for Quarantine 37 (which also obviously harkens back to the original Space Hulk, which was basically Aliens: The board game). I think this is GW's way of saying "Hey, we can give you that too! and you like Space Hulk! and now you don't need to leave our ecosystem to get it. that will be $299 please."

With the release of Ash Wastes shifting the focus of Necromunda, I think this is just an excuse to keep the Zone Mortalis terrain going. That's a ZM door in the video. So I wouldn't worry about it supplanting true Space Hulk. Now that I'm thinking about it, I wouldn't be surprised if they go heavy on the ZM in Horus Heresy as well.

It possible it could just end up being a nod to Space Hulk rather than a replacement for it. Tyranids are due for an update as are the Deathwatch (note in the Inquisitorial "I" on the CAT) so its highly possible its a 'nids and marines box set on a space hulk setting.

I mean Space hulk is more a local then a game to me as the 40K RPGs used it that way. Which you can have guard, Orks, Eldar all fighting it out with Chaos on a space hulk just as much as Space marines verus nids... In fact Tech Priests, Inqusition, Choas, Eldar, Orks are all normal and all have good reasons to be on a space hulk... So my guess is this is a Tech prests box with more choas or Orks mayby even normal nids.

I dunno, man. The very first Space Hulk edition was my gateway drug into 40k, and what made me loyal to GW at least as far as their stand alone games, 3rd Edition Space Hulk remains IMO their absolute best product, and all the way up to current year when I swore off everything with their name on it. Considering that Space Hulk it'self was basically 40k's tribute to "Aliens", and I now own the whole kit and kaboodle of the official Aliens mini's game, do I really need it?

It could be that they start making boards more claustrophobic, so more terrain in boxes? Like when Stargrave gets better if you have more stuff to use tactically. Perhaps with a similar mechanic of non-player entities muddling up the tactics of the players. It might also prepare for an Aliens inspired vs box with Tyrranids. Also, cute robot.

Bringing back Space Hulk would be fantastic, and there possibilities to implement this in Kill Team...if they release a Terminator kill team. The whole idea of Space Hulk is that claustrophobic, horror type of feel and it is almost not possible to do this on a kill team board. I am curious to see this Developer further however as I have a soft spot when it comes to Space Hulk...even if it is for pure nostalgia alone.
