The funny monkey lyric is a reference to Pitchfork’s 2006 review of the album Shine On by Jet. It was rated it 0 out of 10 and rather than a written review of the album, there was simply an embedded UA-cam video of a chimpanzee urinating into its own mouth entitled “Funny monkey peeing in his own mouth EPIC”.
Thanks for the info. God, that's so needlessly cruel. Then again, that was kind of the vibe in the early 2000s. People talk about things like MySpace for example like it was the greatest nostalgic thing ever. Some of it was fun, but the amount of brutality you'd regularly see in comments sections makes 'X formerly known as Twitter' look like a church.
You absolutely should listen through more Porter Robinson! Tyler Joseph of Twenty One Pilots talked about how much he loves Porters music earlier this year, it's very emotional stuff
If you're reacting to Porter songs -- especially Porter _videos_ -- do Something Comforting. One of the best visual metaphors for depression I've ever seen.
A frequent motif in the album this song is from, “Smile :D” is the relationship between Porter and his fans, as represented by a metaphor of a relationship (or literally, as a parasocial relationship). This song, Russian Roulette, is about Porter’s experience in the music industry. He talks about being privileged to be able to employ his best friend full-time, or the power that critics like Pitchfork have over artists. In many ways, these experiences can apply to everyday people as well. Life can feel like a gamble. But we have to live it.
This song makes me cry every time I listen to it, but in a good way. Happy tears. I'm glad you reviewed this, I just found you in my suggested video feed, and your take on this song was very positive and upbeat. Thank you!
I've got an entire sleeve dedicated to Sad Machine and Shelter by Porter Robinson. Dude helped me through some shitty times. 100% listen to more of him. Both of those, Something Comforting, Get Your Wish, Mirror, Everything Goes On, he's got so many insane songs.
you gotta to react to the whole nurture album! it's truly life changing. "Is there really no happiness?" from his newest album ahs also made me cry buckets.
Hey man!! I absolutely loved this video!! When this song came out earlier this year, I was going through a really hard breakup, and it came out at the perfect time for me. I remember what it was like for me to hear it for the first time, and it was really cool and nice to see you hear it for the first time and to hear your thoughts and your reaction!! If you haven't heard it already, I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Porter Robinsons album "Nurture". It is probably my favorite songs of all time ever. If there are songs engraved on my soul, these would be the songs. Keep making vids man!!!
youtube recommended your channel to me, and i'm glad you liked this song from porter so much!! his music means so much to me, and this song is one of my favorites from his new album. to give a bit of background, he came out with an album, Worlds, 10 years ago and then was in a musical slump, going into a deep depression feeling like he couldn't make anything and struggling with his mental health for a very long time. he had a side project, Virtual Self, 3 years after that which explored a style of music very different than Worlds, but then he nearly radio silent for a long time after that. seven years later after Worlds, he released his album Nurture, which was an entirely different style from both Virtual Self and Worlds, and it tackles many of the feelings he had about self-inadequacy, struggles with making music, depression, and more, but it also kinda stated the fact he felt like he finally got over that musical slump. now, just a few weeks ago, he released Smile, which is what Russian Roulette is from. I HIGHLY recommended listening to his other music if you liked this so much. Porter has gone on record to state he has OCD and ADHD, which are both things I have, and it might sound kind of silly, but I can *hear it* in his music. there's just this deep sense of comfort I get from his music. ANYWAY I hope you enjoy his music!! I'm glad I stumbled upon your channel! enjoy!!
You should react to Easier to love you by Porter, its about how we view ourselves and how we should learn to love ourselves. Probably a better content for a therapist react, I'd also shove in 'Blossom' in there
Hey, this reaction was months ago at this point, so maybe you already know all about it, but I thought I would do my best to try and explain the song a little bit in case you were still curious about it. So, knowing about Porter as an artist is somewhat important to this song and in fact a lot of songs on this and the previous album. Porter has a reputation for changing up his style with every new album he does, which sometimes alienates his fans when he goes through such drastic changes in style and genre. For the most part though, a surprising number of his fans have gotten on-board with his constant shifts in approach even despite in his earlier years intentionally trying to alienate his fans from his music. Porter has mentioned fantasizing about the idea of like... just alienating everyone and disappearing entirely. He mentioned in a stream once that he likened his constant shifts in style to playing Russian roulette, spinning the barrel of the gun with each new album and pulling the trigger on each new release waiting to see if this will be the one that gets hated like crazy. In this song he mentions "the team" and his friend he makes a salary for, how there are people who rely on him to be successful for their paychecks now, all while he toys with how appealing the idea of his career bombing is to him. He also quotes some famous lyrics from old popular songs of his to make this point. Others have pointed out that the line about the "funny monkey" references a famous scathing Pitchfork review of an album by the band Jet, lamenting on just how brutal people can be toward music you put your heat and soul into if it isn't liked. That particular Jet album was criticized for being cliche, "just the same old slop", and the album Porter released this song on also included way more pop music cliches than any of his previous work, a point that was absolutely going to be brought up as a mark against it by critics, hence the little monologue at the end of the song about the chord progression and cliches in music. I think you grasp the third verse well already. All that stuff from the previous verses building up into a feeling like nothing matters anymore, and the "russian roulette" metaphor morphing (imo) into something much more literal, fantasizing about just putting an end to it all. I think that is what makes the bridge so therapeutic to me. It feels like taking a step back from it all and recognizing the things in life that matter and are immediately tangible to you, like kissing your cat, heh. Anyway, would love to hear you give some of his other work a try someday. The album this is from, SMILE (as others have also mentioned) primarily focuses on the relationships between fans and artists, while Nurture is more about exploring the different aspects of the creative journey, and the struggle to create something you feel has value or makes you happy. Cheers~
Omg never expected a Porter Robinson reaction it defiantly suits your reactions! Should 100% check out his album Nurture that took 7 years to create as he dealt with writers block, depression and issues with nostalgia
I used to listen to this song and just jam with it, then i started paying more attention to the lyrics more at the end of the song and burst into tears.
I feel so lucky for youtube bringing me here :D You should definitely react to a lot of porter's songs. especially from Nurture or from Smile. His songs talk a lot about mental health and his journey in this life. Great video and you got great energy keep it up!
Most of his songs are not this... Uhh... Sporadic? Im a BIG fan yet I hated this one when it came out becauae it just seemed messy. I think that was part of the point in hindsight. It has grown on me a LOT since then, but it will never be anywhere near his best work IMO. So for anyone that this is their intro to Porter's music, do yourself a favor and listen to some others.
@@FerquesMquenelJimmyDojo-og5st he should make more anything, anytime. I will listen to it and 95% of the time I will like it and 80% of the time I will love it. No other artist hits these numbers for me.
