Sperm whale 'asks' a diver to be freed from a fishing hook

- Sperm whales 🐋 are intelligent and social creatures. Here , a Sperm Whale is 'asking' diver for help as there is hook stuck in its mouth & let the diver help him(or her) out.
The brave diver does a fantastic job freeing Sperm Whale from hook.
Sperm whales are the largest tooth whales and apex apex predators of the Ocean in addition to Orca. However, they are gentle and prey mostly on squid deep down in Ocean.
With such a beautiful creature like Sperm whales and countless others,. My request is
Please DONT POLLUTE OCEAN in any way!
The diver name is Hugues Vitry, world famous Maurician environmentalist and underwater photographer.

Translation for those that don't speak French -
Pepe LePew - I saw this whale pass by me and was opening it's mouth like it was talking to me. It made a funny noise but just floated there looking at me. Cautiously, I went to rub it's nose and that's when I saw the line leading up to it's jaw. On closer inspection, I looked in it's mouth and noticed the hook lodged in there pretty good. The whale grunted at me and tried to pull the hook out but was afraid it might bite me. I was thinking, "This whale is probably trying to trick me so he can eat me." Anyway, I carefully yanked out the hook and I was relieved that he didn't try to bite. As he turned and exposed his backside I gave him a little nudge. The whale made another sound and it sounded like he was thanking me. He stayed a few more minutes and I kept giving him gentle rubs. He seemed to like it because I could see his eyeball following me. He left after a few minutes. So please be careful and help protect the seas by not throwing garbage away at sea.
Fyp
I’m French, after taking the hook out he never mentioned being afraid of being bitten. At first he didn’t understand why she opened her mouth to them and he saw the hook, was a little hesitant because he had to yank pretty hard but once the hook was out the whale made a sound he thinks was her way of saying thank you. He then wanted to show her that her « hardship » was over and he « petted » her and came to her mouth and talked with her. But he didn’t think the whale was tricking them to then kill/bite and/or eat them.

I doubt most people would realize just how rare that moment is. Sperm whales are incredibly reclusive and sightings are very low, plus they can be very aggressive. I fact that it found someone and was willing to even be touched is incredible.

Yeah, but regarding the message at the end of the video, it is estimated that Western countries contribute combined less than 1% of total ocean plastic, with the vast majority coming from China and India, and the rest coming from Africa and South America. So the problem is the audience this is directed to are already doing a good job of waste management, and they are too afraid to call out those that are the problem out of fear of being called racist.
Here is a list with countries that have banned plastic bags.To my surprise I saw the Netherlands in the list, but plastic bags for groceries are still widely in use. However, I also see several African countries, India and China in that list.
Its not about countries, its about regions with percent contribution. For example, if the UK makes up 0.07% of all ocean plastic waste, then banning it in the UK will have no impact. If India makes up 24%, banning it there, AND more importantly enforcing anti-ocean dumping would have massive impact. @@silydeveen2570

@@ImieNazwiskoOK yes, for recycling and processing, but they pay top dollar for it to be done properly. They typically audit, so that part is done well enough because they don't want to lose the money, but for their own domestic waste China doesn't police it so they dump it in rivers.

For those interested, the guy (an overseas French, I’d say Reunionnais but he could from another island) talks about how strange it was to see this sperm whale come to them with its open mouth yet unagressively, how he saw that its mouth was bleeding, and how after the hook was removed he took a little time to try to make the whale understand it was over, hugged it, and how the sperm whale stood by for a while after that, showing signs that could be interpreted as gratitude.
Thank you for providing an English paraphrasing of what he was saying.
I'm sure the whale knew exactly when the hook was no longer stuck in it's mouth. It like you or me when we dig a splinter out of our finger. What a relief!

I was in SE Alaska from 80-94 working for a Large fish/shellfish processing Co. I was out on one of their Tenders as a Worker/Diver/Mechanic. One calm day a smaller Orca (Killer Whale) surfaced near the boat and followed us. It was clearly tangled in commercial fish netting, mostly around the tail. We stopped and I suited up for a dive. That creature let me cut all that netting free w/o panicking and did a couple of "drive by's" afterwards to either test his/her new freedoms or to say Thx. Orca's are thought to be smarter than Dolphins, and from what I've seen, that's probably True.
I worked in Alaska at trident fish processing plant in Cordova. Alaskas' nature is beautiful. Never thought I would ever visit it, being from Kyrgyzstan myself.
Trident & Peter Pan were our biggest competitors. I was at Petersburg Fisheries (Icicle Seafoods) on Mitkof Is in SE Ak. 15 of the best yrs of my life. I spent every opportunity out sport fishing w/ friends on my boat. Winters I'd head for Seattle. Good Times !
Thank you for your generosity in using your skills to help an Orca and for sharing your story!
@@douglasstemke2444 SE Alaska was Good to me. Mitkof Is had only 3300 residents when I moved there in 1981. There were 3 Seafood Processors on the island and 9 whole miles of paved roads. I never locked my house or car until around 87 when the Canneries started hiring Mexicans by the busload out of Los Angles. Suddenly crime went thru the roof w/ assaults, theft, robberies, stolen cars and even a murder. The Company was paying all the Medical insurance for every employee until the Mexicans piled everybody and their dog onto the benefit bandwagon which broke the Medical Ins. If the place hadn't become so polluted w/ crime, I'd have stayed.
Anyways, I was a commercial certified diver before I moved to town and as it turned out, there were only two of us, the other diver being my neighbor and a cold Storage engineer at the Fishery I worked at. We were busy in the summer diving on boats that had scraped bottom, or merchandise overboard, photography and surveying. So anytime a company buying station or contracted fisherman needed a diver, they sent me out w/ the Co. Pilot in a small Cessna on floats. Good Times and I still stop in from time to time to take advantage of their world class fishing.
From what I hear of dolphins, Orcas are probably nicer as well 😅
When a whale shows you it's belly, it's actually looking at you. They see better through their clicks that are bounced back and interpreted into a vision, as clear as a 4 or 5 D ultrasound. The sound is made with their gigantic oil filled heads, it bounces back and picked up by the whale's jaw bone. Sperm whales and dolphins show a special interest in our hands. While their size and way of communicating interests us, our hands interest them. So it doesn't surprise me that this whale knew humans have the right tool for removing hooks. Whales are brilliant creatures, but Sperm whales are especially so and have been trying to communicate with us since we began.
Thanks Mandy
Very cool info, Mandy! Thanks for posting!
it is normal practice i think , turtles and reef clean up services etc.. they have a culture of helping out each other.. though both parties normally tend to benefit ofcourse.. nothing for free in the animal world besides elderly care .. allthough sometimes dolphins help out doomed divers slash swimmers..
Correct dolphins and whales likely can see into our water filled bodies with their echolocation. That's not 4D or 5D though that would imply extra dimensions of space beyond the 3 our universe exist in.
@@johno1544 Mandy is also mistaken about whales being 'brilliant.' Whales may be as smart as dogs or pigs, but they are not "brilliant" as humans use the word.

The funny thing is, this is almost universal - people have extremely strong positive reactions to meeting animals in good faith. It is absolutely magical and would be available everywhere... but people litterally chose to rather kill them and use them for profit. No, not survival, not even to be comfortable, most is done for extra profit that has no reason behind it - But the funniest thing after all is, that the profit is made chasing happiness... which would have been provided if the person did not chase profit in the first place :D
We should all be so humble as this man who literally saved this whale and to the person who filmed this video. That is truly a good man from the heart
For those wondering about whether the diver was a potential snack for the whale, don't forget that sperm whales eat mainly giant squid caught at great depths in the ocean. Only in the past fifty or sixty years have we learned just how deep these whales dive. Also, they can disable their prey using sound waves focused by their giant foreheads filled with oil.
I was wondering how they caught enough food to stay alive with such a small mouth. Thank you.

Wish they could come up with fish hooks that desolve after a certain amount of time. Rather then these metal ones they just leave in ocean
An iron hook of a certain size wouldn't last a year in salt water - but I'm guessing you want "faster"
It would need an alloy with Lithium or Magnesium in the iron to promote "inter-granular" corrosion.
I wish PETA would desolve faster than salt on their Butthurt. Yes it's true!
They actually do make hooks that rot faster but they are not shiny also you do not need. A barb on a hook if you know how to fish and you certainly do not need tv cameras to target your fish these toys are for the inexperienced losers
Iron or even stainless steel hooks will rust fairly quickly. Anglers are often told it's better to cut the line if a fish is hooked deeply and you're not going to keep it. But they're starting to put anti-rust coats on saltwater hooks, which can be nice for the angler, but kind of screws over any fish that gets stuck with one of these and is cut off or breaks off. What really pisses me off is seeing people just cut the line on fish like sharks. You know where you're fishing and what you might catch. Long-handled pliers and bolt cutters are cheap and easy to get, so that you can remove the hook safely.
@@stephenswistchew7720 As a keen fisherman myself i totally agree i`v seen some terrible butchery by so called anglers using barbed hooks
One the most awful cruelties man's ever inflicted is all the killing of those big beautiful peaceful intelligent and rightful residents of our big blue vast oceans. Our earthly oceans we know less about than outer space! (?) 🤔
I dunno, there are many products derived from whales. If harvesting is done responsibly there's no reason it can't continue. I know that's not a popular opinion though. Japan, Iceland and Norway still practice commercialized whaling.
For highly sensitive people who feel a great connection to the earth and her kind gentle animals, seeing any kinds of hunting or killing of these creatures can feel painful. Whether done responsibly by one or many, there still is intense killing of animals done on the planet if you include the likely not kind harvesting of so many cows, chickens, turkeys, and pigs in mostly unregulated slaughterhouses. Sensitive people cannot stomach working a slaughterhouse so it is the insensitive men who are killing so many animals for us to eat. The earth as a whole feels it, as do the animals as a whole, as do we highly sensitive humans. If it were guaranteed that ALL slaughter of animals were done humanely and in a conservative manner, It might be a little better. But add in the insanity and greed of corporations who care only about bottom line and politicians who agree to bulldoze protected lands, not to mention that we still test the most gentle animals in harsh ways in laboratories (white rabbits, gentle beagle dogs, rats, even cats I have heard!) and there's no way someone like me will support even a few kind hunters.
Overall changes need to be made in the consciousness that suggests Man is the most highly intelligent and can dominate for his needs, as that consciousness has overrun and is decimating the planet in very unbalanced ways. It needs to balance with the gentleness of the yin energies and stop acting like it's the only thing that actually matters.

their organ for receiving their clicks is behind their jaw, swimming like that means they're probably trying to get a good look at the diver. also fun fact their clicks can burst a diver's eardrums and if you're bombarded by enough of them your body will probably start heating up because of the vibrations. some diver had his hand out to keep a sperm whale from running into him and had his hand paralyzed by the clicking for a few hours.
cant monitor them any other way aside from free diving tho cause they dont like the sound equipment makes.

What an absolutely touching yet exhilarating experience...!!! Just a beautiful thing to watch folks. We SERIOUSLY need to start preserving nature and it's animals FAR better then were currently doing.
Imagine a sperm whale thinking, "Man, if I could just find human to get this thing out!" The irony...

Sperm whales and likewise other whales are world in their own. Paul Watson said about his very first voyage with Greenpeace to protest whaling that he saw a huge bull sperm whale coming to the aid of a female which had just been shot by the whaler. Watson and a few others were in the Rubber boat, the bull stuck its head out of the water, looked at the Rubber Boat apparently recognized them as being the ones who sadly, unsuccessfully tried to keep the whaling boat from shooting and left them alone.
It's a tall tale but there's footage, the whole thing was filmed, the bull attacked the whaling ship but got shot too. That show of compassion was all there for the world to see, that bull gave its life but with his death he changed people's opinions on whales.
Imagine having the largest predator on Earth come up to you wanting you to help them remove something that’s making them uncomfortable.
Because that’s what happened here.
A once in a lifetime experience…just incredible! Respect 🙏🏽🤙🏾
This was a beautiful moment.
The whale (almost certainly a female, btw) was so gentle, then showed what I can only interpret as gratitude after the diver removed the hook.
Sperm whales have the largest brains in the animal kingdom, so it's very likely that she was very much aware of what a huge favor he had done for her.
How do you know it’s a female?
And if you know, how old is she?!
@@sylvia106 The size.
This whale looked about 35-40 feet long, the normal size range for female Sperm whales.
Bulls can reach lengths of over 60 feet.
Bulls are also considerably more massive, easily weighing between two and three times as much as females.
@@sylvia106That's anyone's best guess.
If she's mature enough to have calves, it's stated that females can start at nine years of age.
She's probably quite a bit older than that, most likely either in her twenties or thirties, but that's just an educated guess going by her size.
Bulls can live well over seventy years, but it's possible that they can reach triple digits.
@@sylvia106 A big one is the way she "talks" in a series of clicks, called a coda, which are usually reserved for social communication between females. Males rarely make those particular sounds. There are recordings of coda clicks on the sperm whale wiki page, if you're curious.

Definitely. I’m always amazed by the intelligence of animals. Whales and dolphins, especially, have languages, emotions, and thoughts previously assumed to be only the realm of humans.
How wonderful when wild animals have the trust and courage to trust us, untrustworthy humans with helping them. I'm just glad not every human is devious and cruel, but there are some many out there who are.
I honestly couldn't imagine being more honoured than having something like a whale or a dolphin coming up to me, wanting my help.
Not sure there is any trust, just desperation, and the wisdom to know "There is one of those little SoBs who put this junk out here... maybe he can help."

This speaks volume about the intelligence of the whale. The sperm whale has more neurons in his brain than humans. Their incredible "language" might be perhaps partially understood one day. There is intense research in that field.
If the Sperm Whale decided to use its "Language" while the diver was in the vicinity, the diver's ear drums would have most likely burst open. Be very weary.
Yes, I bet the scientists can't wait too use them in our military Fleet.
Why this Sperm whale dont have teeth? Thats a valid question.
Here are two possible answers to this.
1. Sperm whales have teeth only in lower jaw and this teeth dont erupt unless the whale reaches puberty thats around ~ 9 to ~ 15,20 years depending whether its female or male
2. There are healthy sperm whales recorded with no teeth at all. Infact, it is believed that Sperm whales don't need teeth at all.
The teeth of sperm whale are a mystery just like this magnificent mammal itself.

The one concern I would have is the whale's clicks. Sperm whales are the loudest animals on the planet. Their more aggressive clicks could potentially do damage to human internal organs. But they seem to understand the power of their clicks, using them defensively against orcas, so maybe they understand the need to stay quiet around smaller benign creatures.
They are gentle and caring creatures. Thats why they dont send this high intensity low frequency ultrasonic beam which can harm or even kill a human.
