Spermwhale have an echo-location so powerful they can talk to another of their kind hundreds of miles away, and at close range, if the whale wants to. It couls kill you with prolonged exposure
And above all that, If they make clicking noise it could paralize you. Happened to some researchers... The sound was that painfull he streched out his arm, as If to stop it. It stayed that way 4 hours 🙈

Sperm Whales have a Neocortex that is also around 6x the size of ours.
Sperm Whales also have a far larger quantity of Spindle cells than we do.
So Sperm Whales therefore have a greater natural capacity to be humane than most of us humans do and although they could easily kill humans they are too majestic and ethical to do so.

Trust me... the people who do animal reconstruction have studied stuff like this for a long LONG time... They know what they are doing. There are methods and things they look for that obviously we don't have a clue about as people not versed in the profession. But I assure you they know their shit.

@@Megameatloaf except that the experts themselves acknowledge that there's only so much they can do if soft tissue outlines aren't fossilised or if there aren't any closely related extant species
don't worry, we're slowly getting better and better at it, like we're now a bit more aware of what types of dinosaurs had what types of feathers when we didn't a few decades ago, but yeah some animals might be really off right now, and many animals will simply never be recreated.
The more I learn about sperm whales the more they become one of my favorite animals.

They commonly dive over 3K feet down, and in extreme cases over 2 *MILES* deep, holding their breath for up to 90 minutes!
And just think that when they get all that distance down there, they hunt and eat a living nightmare: the giant squid!
These beasts fill me with awe on so many levels.

They seem to be aware that we arent able to withstand such loud calls, so whenever someones diving with them, you can say that theyre careful to us, trying not to hit us with their fins or kill us with their calls

As beautiful as this encounter was, i’d imagine it takes a whole lot of grit and courage to not only be swimming so close to these powerful giants but also diving in the open ocean depths like that.

true, but just the thought about the ginormous amounts of water around you, filled with creatures we barely have an understanding about can be quit scary. The whales could take you out in seconds if they want, I think you need a lot of courage to want to swim so close to these beautiful giants.

They can stun or kill or communicate or see with sound. They have the largest brain on our planet who knows how intelligent they might actually be.

My dad had a friend that went diving with whales off the coast of Kaikoura, and this massive sperm whale swam right up to him and eyeballed him before giving him this massive blast of sonar. It was so powerful it paralysed his arm for a few hours.

I wonder if it's possible that whales don't talk to each other with just language, but with images? If they echo locate, there is a significant part of their brain that 'sees' sound like we would see light. If they see sound, could part of their communication be an abstract form of sound that projects images to the other whales? Perhaps their songs are mysterious to us because we are thinking of them as music instead of video.

It was found, last year, that Orcas communicate just as you said. Not only by vocalizations, but by sending an image to other Orcas of what he/she may pick up by echolocation, or by visual.

they cant be hunted, Sperm whales live very deep in the ocean and a full size Bull can scare them off to how bigger and twice its size can be. and if fishing hunters touch the head of the front or its body, it sounds can paralyze your one part of the body

It'll never astonish me how "thinking animals" (great apes, corvids, whales, elephants) have this deep-seeded trust and curiosity when they meet a human. How close the female sperm whale got to the presenter-and knowing how much sound to use-can best be described as like a person picking up a chick. Amazing stuff, truly otherworldly.

t bone I watched every single one of those as a kid. I remember always wanting to do what he does when I grow up and now I’m studying marine biology, hopefully it’s possible to work with these marine animals in some sort of way
What a powerful and amazing experience! To know with one loud click the whale could easily burst his ear drums, stun or even kill. A misplaced fluke or tale could also easily brake bones, and yet they are so gentle and aware of their bodies when swimming close to the divers.
Man/men destroyed and devastated their population, likely some of those very whales were babies during that time. Still, they allow us near them. What an amazing privilege.

Few people can comprehend how loud 230 decibel is. We must assume the kind animal knows how to grade it according to the situation. Otherwise most divers wouldn't survive the encounter
Yeah, and they measured 230 decibels when, where, and by whom? Crickets...
140 decibels is a gun shot noise, consider also that each grade doubles the noise, so, 141 decibels is twice louder than a gun shot and so forth. Scientists have discovered that a Sperm Whale can communicate with another whale across the earth and all it's oceans.

@@dap777754 Considering that underwater environment conducts sounds in a much higher level than the atmospheric air, a Sperm Whale can do the inter oceanic communication with success. But, I'm not a scientist, I'm just repeating what I saw in a documentary video about this whale species. In fact they have a pretty developed sonar communication and an efficient deep underwater navigation through the same sonar structure.
I read a comment of a Navy's sailor about the ship's sonar saying that the divers can't repair the ship's casket underwater while the sonar is activated because it can kill them due to the enormous noise propagation emitted by the sonar and sperm's whale sonar is much more louder, louder than a rocket launching explosion. I just repeating what I have researched on internet and, of course, there's a lot of disinformation being spread. I don't know if it applies entirely about the Sp Wle curiosities.

Little late but they know how to adjust the frequency of their sounds. They are smart enough and considerate enough if they don't perceive us as a threat they will lower the frequency to where we can tolerate it.

@@mikecooper8462 Saw another video of a diver. Said the clicking of a sperm whale felt like he was getting pelleted by giant blobs of sound. It was so intense it paralyzed a diver's hand. What's even MORE interesting is that the sperm whales seem to understand their effect on humans and are actually lowering the intensity of their clicking to avoid hurting us! These animals are intelligent AND compassionate, it's amazing!

God, I vastly underestimated how terrified I am of these whales. The way he describes the sound waves as "overwhelming," "highly directional," and "can be felt through his whole body," and keeping in mind they can paralyze body parts and even straight up kill you with how loud they can be, let alone bursting your eardrums!

Killer whales have been known to drown people by holding them underwater. Again, no one ever was targeted for death by a whale with "sound". How many people have been killed by sound?
The difference between the actual mass of the sperm whale and its skeleton makes one think that maybe dinosaurs don’t look anything like we imagine.
They receive the sonar via their lower jaw. Hence the roll towards the diver. Their huge brains have an enormous number of spindle cells; far far more than humans. These are for socialising, rapid situational awareness, communication and problem solving cells. These ancient highly evolved mammals communicate far more than "im here".

You know how some game mechanics have it such that the boss can target a single player at a time? That's what giant squid feel like when a sperm whale is clicking at it.
Imagine living in the deep ocean in complete darkness and a notification pops up on your HUD telling you the boss has locked onto your location.

I’ve heard vibrations are the sort of key to existence, everything starts as a vibration, everything is a vibration. They could easily kill him with sound but they know that for sure so they just "scanning" his body and swim towards him to (I assume) simply get to know him. It's so incredible. I call BS. No human ever died from whale noises. Whales derive no evolutionary benefit from stunning prey with loud noise; it's not what they do. They make noise to echolocate and have little interest or reason to make insanely loud noise because it serves no purpose. I otherwise agree they are beautiful, intelligent and gentle creatures.

The sound is lethal when the whale wants it to be, it's sort of like a gun and they can control the intensity of it, it's fortunate it doesn't see the guy as a giant squid.

if cetaceans can tell if someone is pregnant by their sonar, I'm pretty sure that they can tell apart a human and a squid, specially near the surface where they can see you perfectly
There have indeed been recorded cases of Sperm whales killing people when enraged -- usually whalers themselves trying to kill the whale -- either with their flukes or by crushing them in their jaws.
They will also fiercely defend their calves.
They're highly intelligent and not animals to trifle with.
They're also the largest predators in the world today, possibly the largest predators of all time.

When he says 230 decibels is louder than a jet, it's really about 10^4 or 10 thousand times louder. Comparing the energy in a sperm whale click to the sound of a jet taking off is doing a disservice to the sperm whale click.

Watching a giraffe autopsy video is kinda what did it for me. There's this really weird nerve that goes down from the brain, wraps AROUND the heart, then goes back UP through the neck. Off the top of my head I don't remember what it does but seeing how giraffe had that whole design flaw going through that insane neck instead of directly from the brain to the destination elsewhere in the head? That speaks to me that evolution ain't just a theory.
Look at what humans have done with food. Evolution and guided design can be both true at the same time.

FYI, these whales have the capability to produce lethal decibel ranges. We even made a weapon that utilized airbursts with sonic projectiles (XM25). Just because something hasn't happened doesn't mean it is impossible. (Black Holes, Flying Cars, Internet)

To put this in perspective those car audio competition vehicles that you can see videos of girls hair litterely blowing around as the bass slams are around 160 or so decibels. I can't even imagine 230 decibels in the water...it must hurt.!!

Keep in mind that when you go up by 10 decibels the sound intensity is doubled. So 110 decibels is twice as loud as 100, 120 is twice as loud as 110, and so on.
A shotgun blast is 130, those competition winning car stereos are 160, the Rockets going off at Cape Canaveral are 180, I believe sonars are between 200 and 220, and look up the Vela Pulsar. It spins at 11 times per second and I think it's 325 decibels. Which is literally unimaginable.
