I went to California last year and because I’m danish I had to visit and see it for myself, it was so great in fact that I’m visiting solvang once again when I go to California later this year.
I've seen many changes in Solvang over the years, many businesses have left. I applaud the danish businesses that survive! They continue to keep the danish spirit alive here. Bottom line: Solvang allows other cultures to see the danish culture in the most respectable and admirable light without competing with Denmark. Many from here will never even get the chance to see Denmark. But they can return home from a wonderful trip to Solvang and introduce "Kringle" to their families...lets all support a very positive and enriching danish culture in both Solvang and Denmark!
While Bent the baker seemed legit. I've seen plenty of programs where they wen't bonkers.. It became german or swizz basicly.. And when it comes to food. I've seen documentaries with Danish chefs going over, and the 3 most DANISH things to eat. Were done compleeeetely wrong.. You might as well have served a thanksgiving dinner, with trout instead of turkey, to compare it to something american. :)
To be fair most Danish bakeries does that as well in a large extend, Denmark just kinda became fameous for it. But Danish pastries are largely german in origin.
What is Smorgasbord supposed to mean? And i was under the impression gingerbread houses were foreign, since I never heard of them before i was a young teen, excepting in german fairytales.
As a Dane i have no idea what smorgasbord is, it's definently not Danish as we call it; smørrebrødsbord which means buttered bread table, smörgåsbord is Swedish.
Solvang and Denmark have a deep connection its heritage and i hope to visit Solvang someday Solvang has a great Danish/American mix though from what i comes up in text and conversations about Solvang is that the interest in Danish heritage among youths of Solvang is slowly dying out sad if true
Kind of arrogant statements if you ask me. Can't expect the big cities in Denmark to stay as it was over 100 years ago. If you want proper Danish old culture you should visit some of the many small towns in Jutland or Bornholm. Everything in Solvang to me seems too extravagant and exaggerated to be Danish. Solvang breaks the old law of Jante and follows the more arrogant American approach.
It is normal to hang on to memories of what was left behind. Since those who left don't see the changes they kinda stagnate, and in a way they DO become more authentic than those who stayed and moved with time. There is nothing arrogant about that. Look at the houses, how many places in Denmark do you see still looking like that? I for one can only come up with Den Gamle by i Århus, Den gamle bydel i Odense and a few very rural villages sprede around the country. Yes there are still bindingsværk to be seen but almost never that many close together
@@Temptation666 You completely misunderstood. We have "old towns" in Denmark that more or less remained as they were 100 years ago. And we have certain places, like Den Gamle By in Aarhus that has specifically preserved the conditions of certain time periods in the city. Try and compare Den Gamle By Aarhus to Solvang. Try actually going there. It is nothing like Solvang. In comparison, it's like taking Warwick castle in England and turning it into Disneyland, with Solvang being the Disneyland equivalent. People in Solvang are so American in the eyes of Danes. I mean cocktails? We didn't have cocktails back then. Heck, even their accents sound Americanized. Especially noticeable by the way they pronounce their R's and how their S is slurred. We do have recordings of how people spoke back then, even of how the common folk spoke, and this is not it.
I was raised in the midwest speaking Danish. I have been told by older Danes from Denmark we speak just the way they used to speak in Nord Jutland years and years ago. We have not changed, the Danes in Denmark have changed their language. Actually modern young Danes I find harder to understand than many Norwegians these days.
You do realize that most Norwegians speak Ny norsk today. And it does not really sound like any kind of danish. Since they sortof made up the language to get away from the Danish past. Bokmål is fairly easy to understand for most Danes. And I only ever found a southern dialect hard to understand since it mixes up with german to some extend.
Looks really nice:) flot i holder jeres danske sprog, jysk er jysk lige meget hvor langt du går tilbage go dag du.hvordan opstod denne by? hvad er historien bag solvang?
if you got to post a link, that means you do not know!! You probably could have said what it means in 20 words or less, but NOOO you got to post a link.. lazy ass..
If my memory serves, a man wrote a book describing the phenomenon, and because he did, we could never let it go. In short it goes "you are not better than the rest of us, and don't you forget it!" it's not an actual law, even though some people try to make it sound like it is.
Well try a few extra words. If you actually know what it is, then explain it. Put on your thinking cap, and your big boy pants and tell us what it means. Have a nicer day!
So cute! I visited Solvang and the city was amazing! So beautiful and felt like I was in another country, the danish americans should be proud and I think the haters are just jealous of the weather ;)
Denmark is more than wind mills and danish pastry. It is more than Carlsberg beer. It is a way of living. The danish modern society is based on trust and that I would call the most important part of being danish. Yeah the title of this video seems to me a bit arrogant and bold.
Yea its a bit silly. danish pastry is completely german import as well. And i think the windmills are actually a dutch design orginally. Its bit funny with the woman saying they dont have the jante lov. Since in some extend that has som ingrain in what it means to be Dansih.
The Dane I hear spoken hear in this video is not like we spoke at home but it is somewhat easier to understand than a yuppie from Copenhagen these days, Hvadt?
oldtimeway1 well the baker has an older danish dialect and to me it sounds like he is from North Jutland 😊 The woman on the other hand her accent has been affected by the american accent but not a great deal, but enough so that I noticed 😊
He sounds like someone that has learned to speak danish. Not really like a native speaker for any kind. She sounds a bit like she a sønder Jylland dialect. And i guess thats what his mostly rassembles as well. also he's a bit pretentious instantly dispelling the notion that the place is more Danish than Denmark :P Og som vestjyde må jeg nok indrømme at jeg aldrig har haft problemer med en Københavner dialekt. De har til gengæld masser af problemer med at forstå jyder, hvis vi smøre en bred dialekt på.
I honestly think slovang is cool but at the same time saying mountains remind them of denmark and talking about mountains is stupid since here in denmark there are no mountain. Denmark is extremely flat
He's obvously fluent in danish but he speaks very outdated kind of. it's nothing to do with dialect or anything. I can't put my finger on it. maybe it's the lack of expressions used today.
Its an american DIalect i would be tempted to say, the punctuation is just off to any Danish dialect new or old. The woman sounds more like a Danish dialect.
I went to California last year and because I’m danish I had to visit and see it for myself, it was so great in fact that I’m visiting solvang once again when I go to California later this year.
Tobias Brage. I love it too. Enjoy your trip later this year.

My mom is in Solvang right now, she didn't knew anything about it, and she L O V E D it, she had SO much fun!
Solvang and denmark evolved in to different directions
I love this entry - I'm Danish :-) :-) … and love that you keep Danish traditions in the heart :-)
I am so excited to go. As a Mexican, I am truly in love with the Danish Culture. Hope to have my little viking one day :3 I'm so excited :3

Funny they don't use æ, ø and å. And you say they're more danish than denmark ? hmmm
Thank you for the video. I really want to come visit Solvang since I miss Denmark so much. Wonder if they have Flaeskesteg )) Danish food is amazing!
What is Smorgasbord supposed to mean? And i was under the impression gingerbread houses were foreign, since I never heard of them before i was a young teen, excepting in german fairytales.
it means butter goose table
DIALECTIC BOOGALOO in what language and why
SMØR GÅS BORD
i guess they forgot the dots and the lines
DIALECTIC BOOGALOO BUT WHY
As a Dane i have no idea what smorgasbord is, it's definently not Danish as we call it; smørrebrødsbord which means buttered bread table, smörgåsbord is Swedish.

Beautiful little American town.
Wrong, Those hanekams are everywhere in Bakeries in Denmark...
I live in a city like that where we are all Danish and we live like DENMARK , but in Italy
Is there still a danish retirement home? My inlaws parents were the caretakers there for years.
I was raised in the midwest speaking Danish. I have been told by older Danes from Denmark we speak just the way they used to speak in Nord Jutland years and years ago. Til jer, haha. Jeg savner de danske bogstaver. Kan se at mange af ordene er omsat til ea eller oe osv :)
Tak for tilbagemeldingen Mikael, Snakker du til mig eller til Bent i videoen?

+Michael Craig I do know what "Janteloven" is since I am danish. But it can't be explained in 20 words - sorry
Have a nice day

Solvang looks more like South Germany or some part of Austria.
So cute! I visited Solvang and the city was amazing! So beautiful and felt like I was in another country, the danish americans should be proud and I think the haters are just jealous of the weather ;)
I was there in 1988 watching a football. I think the trouble of baking is they can’t get Danish sugar

Bent Olsen? I guess you can tell him to "Get Bent" and he will not get mad!

Cacti and Mountains ? Eeeeh
There's nothing ever to do here.
I honestly think slovang is cool but at the same time saying mountains remind them of denmark and talking about mountains is stupid since here in denmark there are no mountain. Denmark is extremely flat
more like a stereotypical denmark
+Do you even carrot all? Well I didn't see it as stereotypical, I saw it as cultural.
It's called Old Danish Culture
He's obvously fluent in danish but he speaks very outdated kind of. it's nothing to do with dialect or anything. I can't put my finger on it. maybe it's the lack of expressions used today.
