  • Tigers once owned by Joe Exotic, of Netflix's "Tiger King" fame, had to learn "how to be a tiger" when they were brought to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado.

Remember this story if you ever think it's a cute idea to hold a baby tiger for photos. Joe Exotic is by far not the only breeder doing this and I don't think that any legitimate operation that truly had animal care in mind would allow for this type of thing.

They wouldn't. That's why Big Cat Rescue - the very organization Joe Exotic tried to disparage - spent so many years trying to get BCPSA passed...and finally did! Now no one can privately own big cats (although I believe people who already did can keep them if they are registered and do not get more,) breed them, sell them, or do cub-handling operations with them.

100% echo this comment. You can see in the video that they have an elevated walkway you can use to walk through the facility. They were breeding them for because they made most of their profits from the cubs, which they could sell tickets to see and pet. Once an adult, the tiger is harder to transport and exhibit and less of a draw than the cubs, plus adults are more expensive to keep….leading to a preference for cubs that they did not have a good plan on how to care for later.

I believe some went to Big 3:30 Cat Rescue in Florida. With the closing of BCR their cats went to Turpentine Creek animal rescue in Arkansas. BCR is now focusing rescuing/ saving big cats in the wild. All of these rescues are doing wonderful work

White tigers aren't naturally occurring. They are linked to inbreeding unhealthy tigers.

@@heathclark318 Yeah, cause if he sets them in the wild, they won't know how to survive on their own due to their upbringing, and they'll either starve or get killed by other predators. At least these cages have a lot more space so it's close enough to being in the wild without putting them at risk. AMAZING what you can learn when you actually educate yourself.

@@blackwidow5762 Its more to do with the hybridization of the cats here in the US, than big cats not being able to reacclimate to the wild. It has been done successfully with cats along with many other species... Again the more you know right lol
      Too many Zoos....

@@heathclark318In the right mindset some can be released back into the wild, but sometimes that cannot happen.
This can be due to the animals behaviour or health (usually health conditions prevent this).
Sanctuaries and reserves can protect animals who can’t go into the wild or who are endangered, they can also educate people about animals and why they are necessary for our existence and the balance of our world.

This guy is definitely doing what’s best for these animals. The Wildcat Sanctuary here in SE Minnesota got some of those Puerto Rican rescues too, I think. They might have also gotten some of Joe’s cats, but I don’t remember. In any case, supporting their missions definitely supports these animals getting to live out their lives in the best way possible.

For anyone confused on why they aren’t in the wild instead of these enclosures it’s because these tigers could not hunt for food and would not be able to detect or defend themselves from danger. They were raised in cages only knowing that humans provided food. If they were to be let out into the wild they would starve to death or get killed by something else.
