/ retropodcasts
After months of requests I finally show you guys the remaining titles in my LaserDisc collection!. Please excuse the changes in light, the reflective covers shift the exposer on the webcam.
***** me and Richard have done commentaries to all 3 Robocop films. Check the playlists on my channel.
You don't like The Rock ?
Love the presentation, no BS, to the point, opinionated, and enjoyably! Thank you.
Darkman so under-rated - love it
Great Collection man. This was a good watch and very informative too.
Funny thing, my uncle was the physical therapist in "Dragon The Bruce Lee story", when you see Jason Scott Lee on the stretcher receiving rehabilitation
Wow, What a collection!
Subscribed and have checked out quite a lot of your reviews, you really go into more detail than any other reviewer I've seen on YT. Very impressive mate.
Thank you very much for the great feedback.
Always knew you were a good movie/ TV show reviewer cos you had taste. Owning a Laserdisc player simply confirms it even moreso. Thumbs up!
Laserdisc is a format I didn't know existed until I became a fan of your videos.
Awesome collection, dude!
Are you eve r going to release a dvd set of all your reviews ? I think your retrospectives are the best reviews since Siskel and Ebert, and I enjoy watching them very much. It's always a pleasure when a true movie fan does a top notch review show. Congratulations on being one of the very best reviewers on UA-cam.
The Fog is on Blu-Ray, at least in the United States through Shout Factory. It's a special edition with fantastic original cover art - worth importing if you have to.
It's on Bluray in the UK too.
*scream factory
Great laserdisc collection dude...
Great collection, most of mine are retired to the attic now due to not being able to connect the player properly to the newer led sets.... My favourites are still in my man cave..
Brilliant! Enjoyed that Ollie. I very nearly started collecting laserdisc but for me it would have been very much from a collectors view point, basically I just like the massive discs & the cool vinyl like sleeves they come in but after doing a lot of research on the format I realised that most the films released on laserdisc you can pick up next to nothing on dvd or they're the same shit that get repeated on tv each week so I decided it would be a waste of money to someone such as myself. I was also unaware of how prone a lot of the titles are to laser rot so I'm glad I didn't go for the collection in the end.
Still always enjoy looking at others collections & you have a great collection, loved some of the cheesy ones lol.
Badass stash of discs there! Thanks for sharing!
That DTS Stereo logo on Blown Away (and a few other MGM titles like Tank Girl) still confuses the hell out of people today, expecting to see their DTS decoder light up when they play the disc when it's just a PCM matrix surround track like Dolby Pro-Logic. I see people selling those as "DTS Surround" discs a lot, which much piss off some buyers when they think they've shelled out for the 5.1 version!
Culturedog Thanks buddy. I recently saw your collection on UA-cam. I loved hearing your stories about LD back in the day and noticed your copies of widescreen review. I still have loads of those magazines. They were so helpful in finding out what discs to pick up with their recommendations on picture and sound quality. It made me laugh when the editor of the magazine installed dts in his car! lol
Oliver Harper Thanks man! Yeah, I love Widescreen Review to death. Never realized they were still selling back issues for less than the cover price nowadays, so I just recently filled in the gaps in my collection and now have all of them except for the first two issues.
They sure did love DTS, that's for sure! But yeah, the amount of information they dished out was stunning. It's the closest I can get to traveling back into time and picking the brain of the people behind the scenes.
Just recently I saw someone on a forum complaining about the color timing on the Abyss Special Edition and then I get the back issues of WR in the mail and BAM! First issue I open, there's a crazy in-depth interview with James Cameron explaining every tiny element of The Abyss box, who did the color timing, what he used for reference etc. So great to have that kind of info!
Sam, I had a subscription to Cinescape magazine, and an in-depth article they did on laserdisc releases and home theatre set-ups are what got me interested in LDs....even though my parents would not got a player because of how expensive they were.
But it's funny that now I own most of the releases from that article
I really like your taste in movies!!
The advantage of the CAV format is not only the freeze-frame feature, but the picture quality in general is a bit better than CLV.
Indeed!
I appreciate your work and enthusiasm Oliver, thumbs up, it is a quality review any review you deliver. How about Fright Night (1985) or even the follow up 1988?, or how about some Film Noir?
Fantastic collection!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also i remeber Star War Trilogy has issued BOX SET for Lasier Disc
Can you do a retrospective/review of Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Jaws (1975), and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)? I love your channel by the way!!
Made it to the end!!! hehe. Great collection Oliver, some impressive titles in there and it's great to see some love for the old format. Also good to see the Alex Ross Superman Forever statue in the background!! Thanks for sharing, a great video
stewmurray47 Hello Stewart!. Yeah I've had the Alex Ross statue for awhile. Glad you enjoyed the video, its good to see you're back on UA-cam doing your Superman statue/figure reviews.
Hehe yeah I remember seeing it in your Q+A video I think. Thanks, I've been really busy with work and family for the last 5 or 6 months but it's good to be back in the 'tube reviewing again. My collection has just grown and grown so I've got a lot to cover. Congrats on all the success Olly!! You really deserve the high sub count and I watch everyone of your videos. Great job buddy!
Hey it's Stew! Small world. Was just checking out some of your latest vids. Weird.
Hehe thanks Kegan, appreciate you checking out my reviews. It's great getting back into the swing of things :-)
Glad to hear. Us superman fans gotta stick together. Especially nowadays.... To many haters lol
Cool video like always! more about LaserDisc would be awesome, cause i just started collecting.
Im in love with this vid.
The bad guy alien drug dealer in "Dark angel / I come in peace" starring Dolph Ludgren would of killed more people if he was using laserdisc as a weapon rather than CD
dude I think about that whenever I see the movie - as a collector and weekly user myself I always wonder how that would feel - they are fucking heavy! lol
Laserdiscs are friggin great. Wish i had the room to start collecting.
Awesome laserdisc collection, dude. I'm a laserdisc collector myself.
Yay you did do a laserdisc video very well done Oliver you have the best best channel on UA-cam just a question what syfy movies do you have on blue ray?
Love your picks too! Have watched any of the LD editions of Apocalypse Now?
Very interesting and informative, thanks Oliver! Had to check my wife's blu-ray copy of Mortal Kombat about the commentary and it's not on there. Any idea as to why it wasn't included?
Love to see a retrospective/review of Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982).
Great little collection there Oliver. You had a couple of Chuck Norris films there that you showed some interest. But if you want to see his best and earliest ones that made him a star check out his 1983 film 'Lone Wolf McQuade' with David Carradine. Great soundtrack and gun action, great stunts and a cool showdown between Norris and Carradine themselves. A must see. Highlight: Norris is buried alive in his 4x4 Dodge and some beer that he drinks and pours over himself before he breaks out of the ground.
Oliver Harper do you have the american halloween 4 and 5 laserdiscs they have the original theatrical ultra stereo audio tracks but i can't find them anywhere.
Fortress was cut for the US,the UK version on VHS and Laserdisc is uncut,Delta Force 2 was cut the UK the Laserdisc is uncut
I got into collecting laserdiscs about 5 years ago, and I own many of the same ones you have, and the quality of many of these releases continue to knock me out, like the CAV Jurassic Park and Criterion of Robocop.
I completely agree about the sound quality of the Criterion laser of Ghostbusters; if you're watching Ghostbusters without killer sound you're missing out on some of the humor. When Ray's proton pack gets fired up for the first time, you FEEL it on the Dolby Surround track here, which is why Egon backs off.
4:53 “Who needs fifteen?!” If you had the die another day special edition dvd Oliver, they had the same amount if not more for the trailers and tv spots! It was ridiculous! I remember seeing quite a few, heck I think some of the bond films had a lot of trailers for many regions and other locales as well as the tv spots so it could get plenty of people running in to theatres to see it.
Can't wait for the Rumble in the Bronx review!
Is there any technical reason that some Laser discs have stronger audio than Blu ray, considering blu ray can also have Lossless/uncompressed audio ?
Oliver, have you seen Close Encounters on the big screen? I first saw it on video in high school and felt kind of like yourself; I saw it at the cinema in 2004, and it was honestly one of the best film going experiences of my life. Totally different experience. I saw it again this past summer for the 40thth anniversary and relished it. Definitely check out the Criterion laserdisc if u can.
Cheers!
Those big sleeves! I'd like to collect Laserdiscs. I've taken a look at a few and the transfers, particularly on late LD releases, look a lot like early dvd transfers, can you confirm this?
Anyway I don't have a problem with this- as much as I love my Blurays I have a soft-spot regarding crappy picture quality. Even VHS noise and pops...I guess it's the authenticity and nostalgia factor. And because I'm weird.
Just watched the first 25mins and I'm enjoying it :-)
My dad has some sort of laser disc, you have to load the 'cassette' containing the disc into the machine. It then ejects the plastic cassette.... Ever heard of it Oliver Harper ?
hey there bud, yes those types of discs are called CED. Instead of being read by a laser the player uses a needle very much like a vinyl player. If you take the disc out of the cassette ( caddy ) they look a lot like vinyl. That format didn't last long due to manufacturing defeats on many releases and varying picture quality.
Oliver Harper I seem to remember him tracking a new needle down many years ago. Interesting to know.. Thanks :-)
Hello Oliver. You were asking yourself why the Uk version of The Fortress is slightly shorter(or the US version a bit. longer). In most cases it is all down to the difference between PAL system and NTSC.PAL(without going into specific terminology)essentially has a film play at 25 frames per second instead of the "usual"24.NTSC may have lower resolution and colour issues but it respects the timing.
can you upload alot of the openings?
so cool. do you know a website where i can post fan edits? i did a dark knight edit i am extremely proud of?
Hello Oliver. I got the following doubt, here in Chile I received two offers. One is to buy a Laserdisc Player (NTSC) that could let me check some films that are not avaible on blu-ray (which is my favourite format by audio and video quality and last year I upgrade my equipment). The second one is a 16mm projector with some cartoons -none of them avaible on blu-, and that is sold by the former owner of some theaters and that collects 16mm an 8mm. Near my house here in Santiago there is the biggest post production center where they can digitalized this material and I could avoid the problems of movie projection and use my equipment (digital projector, digital receiver, etc). What would yo recomend me the LD or the traditional film? PD You got one of the coolest Laserdisc collection I've seen and that remembers the one that Mizpol (wherever he is) use to show in UA-cam.
Oliver man you're collection is amazing, unfortunately my laserdisc are only Superman the movie and the Godfather I mostly collect Superman figures and comics.Great collection I hope it grow's.
I have 2 channels that deal with Laser Disc's but only the one's that have not had a Dvd/Blu Ray release.
Still in the hobby?
And of what kind of equipement do you watch your movies? Maybe a video about that as well ;)
What's better laser disc or DVD?
Hey! I don't know how familiar you are with the Mortal Kombat Laserdisc, but there is lines in the movie that were in the theater that weren't on the DVD or Blu Ray. For example theres the scene with Lui Kang, Johnny Cage and Sonya earlier in the film where they see Katana and Johnny says "When a girl looks at you like that, it usually means something." Then in the theater Sonya says "It means she's a bimbo." But in all of the home releases they cut out the bimbo line. Is that line in the Laserdisc??
Battle of Britain on Laser disc as great sound & picture. very rare to find
As Marge Simpson said when her sisters showed the family their carousel of vacation slides, "Umm... very thorough." Seriously though, that is an impressive collection of laserdiscs. I didn't know that anybody continued to collect the format, I guess it's a tad like people who collect vinyl records(which I confess, I have a fair few). As for some of the titles you haven't watched yet; Darkman II: The Return Of Durant with Arnold Vosloo was no where near as good as the original. Darkman III: Die Darkman Die was a little better but not much. The most recent thing I saw Arnold Vosloo in was last night's episode of Grimm. You've never seen Unforgiven???!!!! Now that's just unforgivable! You gotta watch that, Oliver; that's a masterpiece! Looking forward to your Highlander III review.
This was awesome! Your a true movie nerd indeed. You cheeky B. ;)
hahaha cheers man,
I am looking to get a laser disc player what kind should I get and do laser discs from one country work on another country's laserdisc player
LaserDisc is only NTSC and PAL there is no region coding. Its analogue based. I'd suggest getting a dedicated NTSC player with the change over option for Side A to B. Check out the laserdisc archive and look for models around the times of 1994-1998 www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/pioneer1.htm
Do you have to flip the laser disc in the middle of the movie?
Any new ones lately?
I still have all my Lds...great vid
im trying to remember a virtual reality movie from the 90's about this woman that calls people on the phone and somehow enters their mind with her computer but they don't remember it and it only takes a second in real time. anybody know the name??
This video makes me want to start collecting laserdisks
Phantom Menace is not a terrible film, I love it to death.
Awesome. Ld collector myself
Oliver how do you connect the laserdisc player to newer hdtv?
You can connect with composite or s-video. Its best to use a player injunction with a video scaler to get the best results.
Oliver Harper Sorted, i have mine connected now to my led, and my collection is now back down from the attic and back on my shelf, cheers
Hi oliver. I'm looking to get into the laserdisc format and I was wondering if you could advise a good player I could buy? Some features I would like are- NTSC/pal, auto flip, multi disc changer, best possible picture quality, all the necessary outputs for 5.1 surround sound and as many video output options as possible ie. Scart, composite, s-video etc. I know its probably not possible to find all of these features in one LD player but if you know of a player that covers as many of these as possible I'd really appreciate a recommendation from you. Thanks in advance and keep up the great work on UA-cam!
If you want a player that plays NTSC/PAL I would recommend picking up the Pioneer CLD 515 and CLD 925 or you could buy the Denon LA 2300 model. Those all have auto flip, AC3 and the required outputs for sound and picture. Those are midrange players if you're on a tight budget and is a good start off point.
Thanks Oliver! That's a great help. Can't wait to watch Star Wars the way it's supposed to be seen :)
A very enjoyable watch Oliver :-)
Some cracking titles in there, very similar tastes to my good self as well ;-)
How much is a decent laser disc player, I've been browsing on the bay and there's various makes etc
Pioneer seems to be a common one.
Ps: will you be doing a Christine retrospective?
GRUSS Newton How much are you willing to spend on a player?
Oliver Harper 150-200?
GRUSS Newton oh good!. Well I just checked eBay and there is player on the there with the model no. HF7G. Its a Japanese model so you will need a stepdown converter. Its NTSC only. But it has all the right outputs for picture and sound. Avoid any of the DVL models which have a DVD player built in. The DVD playback will be awful by todays standards and the LD picture is the equivalent of a mid range player. If you don't want to fork out about £200 Id suggest getting hold of the Pioneer CLD925 model which was the last UK dedicated LD player. Always stick with Pioneer when it comes to LaserDisc.
I bought a sweet box set of all 3 Darkman movies recently
46 titles? That's a lot of Laserdisc movies!!!
Red Letter Media fan! Awesome.
And yes watch Unforgiven immediately. One of Eastwood's best.
Legend!🤘
Split Second is coming out on Blu-ray in June.
I just pre-ordered my copy!. Expect a review in future.
the first and only time i saw a movie on lazer Disc was Bran Stoker Dracula from 92 back in the late 90s i was about 5 years old then i forgot about it then i got interested in this format if i were ever get one i would get john woos the killer and put it on my wall . i did buy my history teacher a lazer disc of the mask for 15 dollars
LaserDisc's to my point of view, where the prototype version of DVD's HD DVD's and Blu-Ray's.
i think you gonna review the godfather or lawrence of arabia or any best picture films that you have in any day of the month or the year
Alright Ollie mate, hope we see more laserdisc updates soon ;)
Yes we have a new LD update video in the new year!
+Oliver Harper Fantastic! Quick question and I'll leave you alone lol: Can you name some Laserdisc titles (let's say 10 max) that are worth getting for the special features alone...? If that's alright. Got a mate whose asked me to ask you since my knowledge is limited. Cheers sir! :)
try get MUSE LD
think it only came out in Japan but it was HD laserdisk or something like that!
I think the extra couple of minutes you speak of on "Fortress" probably is PAL speedup?
Well if its speed up then it would be shorter ;)
Clerks, the best Kevin Smith film
Hi, is Lazer Disc better than DVD for quality
+nwlman
It varies widely, but it's difficult to say for sure, since DVD uses digital video and LaserDisc (against all logic) is analog video (which continues to blow my mind).
Sound is definitely better on LaserDisc, as many can since it's all analog and hasn't been compressed to digital form like DVD. Vinyl enthusiasts can attest to this, since many say vinyl has a "warmer sound" than CD.
But usually if a DVD is sourced from a LaserDisc, if done without care it's going to look pretty bad, because you're compressing an analog image to digital, with pixels and what not. DVDs from the nineties are a GREAT example. (Lookin' at you, Blade Runner...)
+Kevin Striker thanks, I think I will invest in a player
I dont have many LaserDiscs but I do have CLVs of Terminator 2 and Back To The Future 3.
I remember Millenium being a big deal when it was released. Of course it was eventually shown to be a huge dud, but it wasn't obscure at all during release year.
Also, as great as Bruce Campbell is - it's Tim Curry that makes Congo great :)
You should make a retrospective on buckaroo banzai
The Fog is on Bluray here in North America in a deluxe edition from ScreamFactory and it is brilliant!
Cool!. The Scream Factory releases are all locked to region A. I need to pick up a multi regional Blu ray player.
Oliver Harper
If you check online there are some regular bluray players that only require a update with region free firmware. I put region free firmware on my Toshiba previously locked to region A player because I imported Arrow Film's release of the 'Burbs on bluray. Works like a charm.
Oliver Harper You can also take your current one into a specialist who will remove the lock for a price.
These things remind you of soundtrack albums.
Laserdisc was "before my time", so I never got to see footage from it. Does anyone have a link with comparison shots between a scene on VHS, Laserdisc and DVD?
I was especially wondering how it compares to DVD, since it became the more widely used medium, but LD is much bigger, which makes me think it has better picture quality?
All comparisons of laser disk and dvd are rubbish because they use camera to get the laser disk footage
I'd say just download a torrent of Star Wars on Laserdisc. It's easy to find on any other format to compare, plus there are plenty of torrents for Laserdisc Star Wars because it has the appeal of being the closest thing to the unaltered movie in DVD quality.
And from what I've seen, laserdisc is like a low-quality DVD from the '90s (Which is understandable) and with oddly "tinny" sound.
Kevin Striker LaserDisc audio I've found to be far superior DVD. Far Less compression. Picture wise its not.
Oliver Harper I guess I should have clarified I was referring to Star Wars on Laserdisc and not Laserdisc in general.
Kevin Striker I've never had problems with the SW LaserDiscs sounding tiny. The original trilogy have great PCM matrix surround tracks. Did you actually watch them on LD or transfers of them on DVD?
Can we see your Dvd/blu ray collection?
I may do a Bluray collection video at some point.
Have you seen the laserdisc demonstration Leonard Nimoy did in '81?
My collection keeps getting bigger, have you slimmed yours down at all?
Afternoon Mike, my collection since doing this video hasn't increased that much. I've given away some titles and purchased a few more. Im very picky on what I buy on LaserDisc now as I don't really have much space for more titles but im always on the look out for interesting films that I may have missed.
Hi thought liked this video before but liked it again lol but only own few of these even tho never own the player but still bought few movies just for my collection that is Robocop 1 & 2 Predator 1&2 first Die Hard,Ghostbusters 1 & 2 then Terminator 1 & 2 oh last one is Gremlins but dont have pt 2.
I was waiting for the Evil dead 2 red blood disc. :-)
You could have named this "My ongoing virginity." and it would have been synonymous! :P
Navy Seals is a true guilty pleasure for me... check it out dude!
Awesome do U have The Matrix....that's a tough one to find ("
Ron Wess MusaQ If I did I would've shown it lol But yeah its too expensive, usually going for about £60-80.
Don't mind me asking, but why do you only collect NTSC LDs?
SpiceOrange Better transfers and more audio options available. You can't have dts and Dolby Digital on PAL LDs.
Ahh I see, that's a shame because it would be easier to collect PAL ones
no NTSC ones are just as common as PAL releases. There was also more pressed as well. PAL was a small market compared to NTSC.
No I meant as you're in the UK, if you were going out you would be finding PAL LDs in charity shops
Are you sure about True lies being Pan & Scan? James Cameron shoots in Super 35, which is quite the opposite of Pan & Scan: The 4:3 version should show MORE than the widescreen version.
My copy is in widescreen but there was a Pan and Scan (4:3) release www.lddb.com/laserdisc/06208/8640-80/True-Lies-(1994) I discuss Super 35 when I show the Mission Impossible LD.
You should actually show some clips of the LD movies. Illustrate the best quality it could hold.
I will in an coming video on the LaserDisc format.
Oh, awesome. Look forward to it dude. The last time I watched an LD movie was back in the 90's. Think it was Mr Nice Guy with Jackie Chan.
LaserDisc shall rise again!
*Please, I need to believe this
Holy Grail of LD's!!! : )
1:13:27
WOOOOOO
Ordered my region free Blu-ray from Germany, can't wait. This movie kicks ass.
But as is the case with many other movies, including the Death Wish films, Silence of The Lambs, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut, etc., Split Second was actually filmed in 1.33:1 (Full Frame). Meaning, when you see the 16:9 version on Blu-ray or thread it through a cinema projector, you're actually seeing less of the picture.
Here's Paths of Glory as an example: i.gyazo.com/0f9c4535ea297e50ae43e30780f8b08a.png
*tap* *tap* *tap* *tap* *tap* *tap*
Why do I so love so the finger tapping?
like your videos
Nice video, and nice collection. I dipped in and out while I was doing something else. I take it you watch your LD on a LCD screen?
Bean. That film makes me mad. The VHS version had extras after the main feature. The annoying thing that is that most of the outtakes seemed to be in the same vein as the series with the crazy problem solving, and there was loads footage. There is probably a decent film that resembles the comedy of the TV series to be had if it was re-edited.
TPM - When I volunteered in an Oxfam shop someone donated an Asian videocd version in a massive cardboard box. Wish I'd grabbed it, as it probably got shoved in the bin.
Bababooey! That movie is great, and I love Stern. I'm addicted to watching it on UA-cam.
Close Encounters. I'm not a massive fan either. I need to source a decent copy and give it a proper rewatch. What I have found is that I've enjoyed it more as I got older, for the mid life crisis aspect, I suppose.
Braveheart - Didn't like, but I didn't see it back in the day. Found the staging of the battle scenes to be weirdly claustrophobic.
Truman Show - Great movie. I wonder if there are slight advantages to watching it on LD if it gives a more authentic "TV" look?
Strange Days. I need to grab a copy. I'm a massive Cameron fan, I like the premise, and I was a teenager in the 90s, so I feel a weird nostalgic attraction to it.
Under Siege. Back in my day, we had to make do with the pause button!
The Postman. I'm a defender of it, although it is cheesy, I admit. It helps that I'm a massive post apoc fan. I was even considering spending over the odds for a DVD copy (unusual for me) when it was out of print, and then oddly, it turned up brand new at the end of a isle in ASDA.
Wrote about it here:
www.denofgeek.com/movies/18242/looking-back-at-kevin-costners-the-postman
Sneakers - Soft spot for it, even though it has its cheesy moments. Particularly, the ending.
Silence of the Lambs. I'm not a massive fan of it, even though I'm interested in the subject matter. I do, however, recognise its landmark status amongst crime dramas and psychological thrillers in terms of influence.
Jungle Book. I can't create a mental picture of the person that would have bought that film on LD at full price. Even now, I think some parents use VHS as it's disposable. I suppose there are some adults who love Disney though.
On Deadly Ground. The consummate Seagal movie. In that he walks around being a "buddist" who puts his hands in a loose prayer position while using his martial arts skills to humiliate people. I don't know whether the film is pretentious or aspirational or both.
Four Weddings. Not a fan, but The Tall Guy might be in my top 50.
Millenium. I seem to remember it's not very good. You get some crap films that build up a cult reputation, complete with 10/10 reviews on IMDB just because they are underdogs. When IMDB first started showing the star rating next to the review, I saw loads of reviews that gave a film a 4/10 personal rating and the praised it in the text of the review. I dare say that a lot of them have been taken down or changed now, when the person who did it cottoned on to how daft they looked.
Lawnmower Man. Oddly, it's "culturally significant". I had to check to see if there was a crap early 90s TV show based on it that ran for 5 eps or something. It seemed like the kind of thing that would have existed, but it doesn't.
Oliver Harper looks like review bruh’s brother
