As one of your OG fans, Ollie, none of your reviews were ever rubbish. They started off good, and just kept getting better. I know an artist looks back and sees all their "mistakes," but you've nothing to worry about with that early stuff. Honestly, I'm still waiting for you to do a retrospective on Siskel & Ebert go to the movies. ;) I'd like to hear your thoughts on their style, format, and opinions.
The Right Stuff, one of my all time favorites! It is epic, beautiful, fun, dramatic... It always feel like a 1h45mn movie not a 3hrs one. Amazing direction, great cast, great score, great visuals. 5.5/5 movie.
Being a subscriber to the channel for a short time, I believe you will like THE RIGHT STUFF. I am sure you will but 2 or 3 viewings will be required. I would recommend viewing it first time straight through. The beauty of this film is you can stop and come back to it without losing any joy. Takes place over nearly 20 years. It doesn't cut inbetween plot lines which is very nice to stop and come back to it. A tad long but it flies by. Enjoy it sir. Thanks again for your channel. Cheers from the States.
Always love getting a new update on your collection and look forward to all the new stuff coming up on your channel. Especially eager for the Streetfighter one with the lads!!! Happy 2017 Oliver.
Would love to see a retrospective review of Johnny Mnemonic at some point. I always find the stories of big box office flops to be the most interesting.
JM was really done on a shoestring budget. Twenty-five million US dollars for a '90s sci-fi action movie wasn't really anything to write home about. To compare, T2 was about one-hundred million (4x the budget) and even a movie like Virtuosity (more inline with JM) was $30 million. I guess what I'm getting at is that JM was no Waterworld. Johnny might have flopped, but it was a short fall - considering.
still I think it was a story with potential. the premise alone of a future where humans can use their brains as temporary hard drives i find quite interesting. would've just like to know more about the background thoughts and making of that movie. and as we all know Oliver always does a great job in his reviews to summarize everything noteworthy about the movie and its background in one great video review.
I also do have a pan and scan edition of "Psycho" on laserdisc. This was considered one of my favorite Alfred Hitchcock films of all time, "Vertigo" is considered my number 2 favorite Alfred Hitchcock films of all time.
+stu pid just out of curiosity what did you even think he meant like who could have possibly read that in any other way then what he meant???!!? Hahaha WUT
chapter 9 of a Muppets Christmas carol is a nugget for this lease. In the theatrical release, this song sequence was taken out due to results from test reviews. However, it was put back in for the VHS and laser disc release. Disney now though has removed it within the latest releases!
I've seen Batman Begins in theaters when I was 14 years old and really loved it it told Batman's origins done right. But I love Burton's Batman better cause I grew up with 89 Batman film and Keaton is my favorite Batman. I hope you mention me in your Batman Begins review that Batman 1989 is my favorite movie of all time I hope.
Congrats on the pickups. The Criterion Silence is great for its color which is different from all other releases. Batman is essential because it has low end in the soundtrack that is absolutely gone on the remixed 5.1 for the SE DVD and Bluray. The LD PCM and original snapper DVD 5.1 are far better and more in your face-particularly the opening title card.
Yeah you really should review The Long Kiss Goodnight! I watched it yesterday for the first time and I'm shocked I hadn't seen it earlier because it was so entertaining. The explosive ending is amazing! :D
I'm sure that in the extended cut of Robin Hood Prince of thieves there is a scene where "scribe" is talking to Robin Hood, but earlier in the film he'd had his tongue removed by The Sheriff.
UA-cam is a bloody pain. What i think has happened is for example if you don't watch the commentaries (podcast specials) or the last couple of videos I posted, UA-cam thinks you're not interested in my content anymore thus won't inform you. The best thing to do is click the ringing 'bell' icon just below my video which will inform you of everything I post.
Looking forward to the Batman Begins retrospective! Hope you do the whole trilogy, or at least Dark Knight too. Liking the retro gaming tuns in the background. Gonna have to go play Streets of Rage now.
Oblivion is a fun little flick by Full Moon, just avoid the sequel. It's crap. And The Long Kiss Goodnight... my annual holiday film! Love it. Such great dialogue and fun action. I too love the final explosion with the flying cars. So rad. And I remember seeing Flight of the Navigator in the theater back in the day. I loved it back then, but haven't seen it in probably 20 years. I might pick up the BluRay and do a double feature alongside The Last Starfighter. Nice pick-ups dude! Makes me wish I still had my Dad's laserdisc player.
Black rain is one of my favourite non sci fi ( ok not so recent ) Ridley Scott movies .. when do you think you will give it that retrospective touch Oliver . an amazing film . Empire of the sun and the psycho disks are a great buy
Hi Oliver, I had a modest laserdisc collection when it was the premium format, but have long sold it all off. I'm curious, what motivates you to buy movies on a long antiquated format, even movies you don't even like? Do you ever watch them again after the first time?
Hi there, well i've been collecting LD's since the late 90s, I got into it when the format was dying out. Over the years i've changed my players and stopped and started my collection, i sometimes lose interest then suddenly get that spark to collect again. I love the format because of the sound, nothing beats an uncompressed PCM Dolby Surround mix and the LD sleeves are always great to look at.
The Japanese version of Johnny Mnemonic is actually significantly better. For the US theatrical cut they removed violence, a lot of the subplot featuring Beat Takeshi, and rescored it with cheap music that brings the whole thing down. The Japanese cut would appear to be the original version of the film, or nearer to it anyway.
Is your Muppets LD the longer version? I've heard there is a musical number present that is cut from the DVD, BD versions. I think you'll enjoy "How to Get Ahead in Advertising". I remeber seeing it afew ties on the telly and alwasy enjoyed it, though it's been years. I can't believe they did a P&S version of Silence of the Lambs. Why not just release it open matte for fullscreen? The cinematic aspect ratio already looks too cramped for my taste. Panning and scanning within that area would make the film pretty unwatchable.
Again, great stuff you got going on. Seeing how you are into editing and such Oliver, I was wondering if you had any advice or tips in getting work here in London as an editor. I just recently arrived and looking to find work in this field as it was part of my degree in Australia. And advice you could share would be appreciated. Cheers.
I went hunting for work a couple of years ago and got ignored by everyone, they all wanted people with like 4 years experience already in the industry and wouldn't take on anyone without it. So how you supposed to get work in the first place? Sometimes its all about who you know just so you can get an employer to look at you work.
I hear that. Had that response 3 years ago when I first arrived in London after I graduated, no body wanted me. So I went off and directed a few more short films and did cheap paying web commercials for local bars, clubs, and beach bars in Greece to build up a rep and experience. Now I am back I am told I am overqualified for lower jobs and they are afraid to hire me because I might leave in a few months for a higher paying job. I just started networking here in London now, and the little jobs seem to be within reach. But I guess in the end, we need connections, you need to stretch/bend/exaggerate the truth in order to get noticed at to get the agencies and employers to want you.
Billy Blanks (star of TC 2000 and other cheesy direct-to-video junk) did those Tae Bo series of exercise DVDs. And what have you got against Geena Davis?
I haven't watched the LD yet but I checked the LaserDisc Database and it says that song remains intact on LD. www.lddb.com/laserdisc/05208/1729-AS/Muppet-Christmas-Carol-The
LOL - I watched the trailer for TC 2000 (excellent!).... The martial arts in it looks really good actually. I might just watch it on mute to some music.
Oliver Harper cool I love fortress but it is a shame no recent DVD release is uncut so I stick with my old vhs release lol maybe you are the man to ask about this Oliver but do you know if there is a decent uncut laser disk of fortress
Oliver Harper seams I have just answered my own question but have failed to answer yours as I looked on IMDb for running time it only lists one running time of 95 mins but in the alternate version's section it says UK vhs and laserdiscs are the full uncut version's but yea the R rated version is pretty butchered much of the violence towards the end is badly edited Jeffry combs death for example doesn't make much sense alogh I'm not actually sure if the R rated version is actually shorter it may be a case of them cutting away to reaction shots rather than cutting down the run time I saw the R rated version once and was rather unhappy with it and have never seen that cut since so the exact specifics of if its edits to time or alternate shots is a wee bit vaege to me all DVDs of candyman and a nightmare on elm street suffer the same fate but oddly the euro/uk vhs and some laserdiscs are intact I'm not sure of fortress's rare status on laserdiscs but I'm envious you have it if the uncut uk version lol keep up the good work mate
No LD isn't better than DVD, its a composite image so you will always have that drawback. You can get high end LD players with all the fancy noise reduction and when used with a video scaler you can get an image close to DVD quality. The sound however on a LaserDisc often out performs DVD due to having less compression.
very cool. I am assuming that you have a player to go with these lol. I know duhhhh right? hahaha! It would be cool to get all the classics in Laser disc form. Thanks for sharing :)
haha yes I have a player to go with these. If anyone is interested on what player I have here is a link to the model I own. laserdiscarchive.co.uk/laserdisc_archive/pioneer/pioneer_cld-r7g/pioneer_cld-r7g.htm
Surprised Oliver (or anyone) dislikes The Saint. I found it incredibly entertaining at the time and Elisabeth Shue was stunning. But that opening scene with the kids always bothers me. I don't get why filmmakers have to frontload their movies with a child origin story. Like, imagine American Pie starting with a 6 year old kid longing for sex.
Sigh... Laserdisc..... i have about 12 left in my collection now... i just cant part with them, Of course they are the Star wars sets, True Lies, Blade runner etc etc
As one of your OG fans, Ollie, none of your reviews were ever rubbish. They started off good, and just kept getting better. Studied Empire of The Sun as a novel for my Aussie high school English one year - brilliant movie. :) Thanks for this LaseDisc update - cool pick ups.
The Right Stuff, one of my all time favorites! It is epic, beautiful, fun, dramatic... It always feel like a 1h45mn movie not a 3hrs one. Amazing direction, great cast, great score, great visuals. 5.5/5 movie.
I'm glad you collect laserdiscs. they are an underrated format and makes me nostalgic for that time in my life.

Streets of Rage II (Bare Knuckle II) intro music in the background, memories!
In the Japanese cut of johnny mnemonic, the extra 6 min is a scene at the end where the dolphin is served to everone as exquisite sushi.
Great stuff, Ollie. Yeah, you definitely need to get around to reviewing The Long Kiss Goodnight. An absolute classic in my opinion.
Great video. Hope to see more reviews soon and love listening to the commentaries with Duncan and Richard.
Always love getting a new update on your collection and look forward to all the new stuff coming up on your channel. Especially eager for the Streetfighter one with the lads!!! Happy 2017 Oliver.
I'm the same. I find it hard to move away from the video editing software im used too.
loving the background music btw :D
Would love to see a retrospective review of Johnny Mnemonic at some point. I always find the stories of big box office flops to be the most interesting.

Wasn't the memory of his brain like 16 gig or something? pretty funny.
I also do have a pan and scan edition of "Psycho" on laserdisc. This was considered one of my favorite Alfred Hitchcock films of all time, "Vertigo" is considered my number 2 favorite Alfred Hitchcock films of all time.
The Mask of Zorro would make for an awesome retrospective. I re-watched it for the first time in awhile last night, it still holds up.
Batman Begins: best Batman movie made. Looking forward to the review.
i'd love to see a retrospective for mask of zorro, i love that film and the score.
Batman Begins is twelve years old? Fffffffffffaaaaaaaaaack!
stu pid I think he meant how time flies. Stupid!
Really? Wow!
+stu pid just out of curiosity what did you even think he meant like who could have possibly read that in any other way then what he meant???!!? Hahaha WUT
I'm as old as that movie
Streets of Rage 2 as the background music!? Love it!
Currently binge watching to the retrospective reviews. Keep up the good work!
chapter 9 of a Muppets Christmas carol is a nugget for this lease. In the theatrical release, this song sequence was taken out due to results from test reviews. However, it was put back in for the VHS and laser disc release. Disney now though has removed it within the latest releases!
Streetfighter is a guilty pleasuref mine.... far more enjoyable then Mortal Kombat imo... Great collection btw
Some really nice pick ups there Ollie and some not quite so nice! Streets of Rage music in the background too? Superb. All the best pal
I know the feel Oliver, FC 7 was fantastic
2017 should finally be the year you do a commentary on Starship Troopers. C'MON DOOO ITTTT CMON!!!!! DOOO IT!!!!
Is that the Streets of Rage soundtrack I can hear in the background? Love it. Glad I'm not the only one who remembers laserdisc
Also you guys need to do a Commentary of Miami Connection my friends and watched it. Great time!
I was sat here trying to work out where i knew the music from - it's background music as you scroll through Streets of Rage on the megadrive!
I'm very glad to hear that you're reviewing Batman Begins.Great film.Would you ever consider reviewing 1941? A rather forgotten Spielberg film
I'm appreciating the SoR2 music
I can't wait for that generations review..😁
Oliver Harper LaserDisc game strong!
I watched TC 2000 - made me realise just how under-rated Bolo Yeung is... He could've taken anyone, anytime he wanted I reckon.
Hey Oliver noticed this video was missing from my subs feed. Thought you would like to know
UA-cam is a bloody pain. the right stuff is amazing!!!
Looking forward to the Batman Begins retrospective! Hope you do the whole trilogy, or at least Dark Knight too. Liking the retro gaming tuns in the background. Gonna have to go play Streets of Rage now.
I know I am repeating a comment, but for the love of Alyah watch The Right Stuff, one of the best from the 80's
Batman Begins is the next Review/Retrospective. Nice!!!
Nice to see you Vape !! Great !!
Can you make a video about your favourite movies
Oblivion is a fun little flick by Full Moon, just avoid the sequel. It's crap. And The Long Kiss Goodnight... my annual holiday film! Love it. Such great dialogue and fun action. Nice pick-ups dude! Makes me wish I still had my Dad's laserdisc player.
How To Get Ahead In Advertising is an excellent movie. Get it watched!
Great job! I love your videos!
when will you make a video review or maybe retrospective about the movie hardware from 1990 ?
I did pick up Hardware on Bluray hoping to review it but i thought the film was a bit naff to be honest and didn't interest me to review it.
Oliver Harper at least it has a great soundtrack.
Disney´s The Black Hole 1979 review,please.
Ollie would you consider reviewing the Kate Bush short film "The line, the cross and the curve".
Black rain is one of my favourite non sci fi ( ok not so recent ) Ridley Scott movies .. when do you think you will give it that retrospective touch Oliver . an amazing film . Empire of the sun and the psycho disks are a great buy
Why is this so entertaining lol!
How do you transfer Laserdisc to DV?
Hi Oliver,
I had a modest laserdisc collection when it was the premium format, but have long sold it all off.
I'm curious, what motivates you to buy movies on a long antiquated format, even movies you don't even like?
Do you ever watch them again after the first time?

The Japanese cut would appear to be the original version of the film, or nearer to it anyway.
right stuff is as perfect as you can get.
Do you have Legacy of Rage Brandon Lee first film!
Is your Muppets LD the longer version? I've heard there is a musical number present that is cut from the DVD, BD versions.
I think you'll enjoy "How to Get Ahead in Advertising". I remeber seeing it afew ties on the telly and alwasy enjoyed it, though it's been years.

Yeah, The Right Stuff is 193 minutes long. But I suspect you'll discover those 3 hours fly by.
Again, great stuff you got going on. Seeing how you are into editing and such Oliver, I was wondering if you had any advice or tips in getting work here in London as an editor. I just recently arrived and looking to find work in this field as it was part of my degree in Australia. And advice you could share would be appreciated. Cheers.

Round 5 theme (from the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive game, "Superman" that was playing in the background in your video) sounds fantastic!
Streets of Rage I think.
I thought laser disc were outdated. I thought it went out with the mid 90s, I didn't think _Batman begins_ would be available on laser disc.
what was the second track of music used? It's killing me lol
I've got the pal laserdisc of The Long Kiss Goodnight.
Billy Blanks (star of TC 2000 and other cheesy direct-to-video junk) did those Tae Bo series of exercise DVDs. And what have you got against Geena Davis?
Is that a streets of rage tune in the background?
@0:15 I'd like to know more about the Oliver Harper editing/production process.
any new ld?
you may have been asked this already, but does the Laser Disk of Muppet's Christmas Carol keep in Michael Cain's Song? (The Love Has Gone)
I haven't watched the LD yet but I checked the LaserDisc Database and it says that song remains intact on LD. www.lddb.com/laserdisc/05208/1729-AS/Muppet-Christmas-Carol-The
Thanks :-)
Yes, the Laserdisc is the only widescreen release for the uncut Christmas Carol. Worth getting a LD player just to watch that.
Did The Mummy do a lazerdisc or would that have been too late?
CoolBoysBackYard yes the mummy was released in japan and usa.
Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro 7 ~
which is more user friendly for someone who's not at the "advanced" stage of content creation?
Amelia Doubleyou they are both similar- complicated and not user friendly to begin with but a breeze once you get the hang of them.
LOL - I watched the trailer for TC 2000 (excellent!).... The martial arts in it looks really good actually. I might just watch it on mute to some music.
Do a retrospective review on American Psycho! I would love to hear your thoughts on that film
R.I.P Tiny Tim
Please review The Final Countdown and/or Fortress one day :)
I will be reviewing Fortress in the coming months.
Oliver Harper cool I love fortress but it is a shame no recent DVD release is uncut so I stick with my old vhs release lol
maybe you are the man to ask about this Oliver but do you know if there is a decent uncut laser disk of fortress
Which runtime is the uncut version? I have it on LaserDisc which runs at 95 mins.
Oliver Harper seams I have just answered my own question but have failed to answer yours as I looked on IMDb for running time it only lists one running time of 95 mins
but in the alternate version's section it says UK vhs and laserdiscs are the full uncut version's
but yea the R rated version is pretty butchered much of the violence towards the end is badly edited Jeffry combs death for example doesn't make much sense
alogh I'm not actually sure if the R rated version is actually shorter it may be a case of them cutting away to reaction shots rather than cutting down the run time I saw the R rated version once and was rather unhappy with it and have never seen that cut since so the exact specifics of if its edits to time or alternate shots is a wee bit vaege to me
all DVDs of candyman and a nightmare on elm street suffer the same fate but oddly the euro/uk vhs and some laserdiscs are intact
I'm not sure of fortress's rare status on laserdiscs but I'm envious you have it if the uncut uk version lol
keep up the good work mate
Oliver: is the Laserdisk quality better than the DVD´s? Or are you buying them only because they are bigger and for their presentation?
No LD isn't better than DVD, its a composite image so you will always have that drawback. You can get high end LD players with all the fancy noise reduction and when used with a video scaler you can get an image close to DVD quality. The sound however on a LaserDisc often out performs DVD due to having less compression.
Thanks for the reply!
How To Get Ahead In Advertising fucken HILARIOUS film 😅😅🤣
Oliver Harper Cool I bet watching parties are great at yours. :)
I bet Flight of the Navigator would be great as a retrospective
I covered Flight of the Navigator about 4 years ago!
Awesome! I love that movie and didn't see it on your channel.
Oblivion is competently done, but nothing spectacular. Also has a sequel.
What is the background music?
Street of Rage!
I'd buy that Flight of the Navigator laserdisc if you could sign it.
When are showing the batman begins
Like you I quite enjoy Street Fighter. Partly because of nostalgia but it's fun rubbish anyway. Any idea when that commentary might be posted?
Surprised Oliver (or anyone) dislikes The Saint. I found it incredibly entertaining at the time and Elisabeth Shue was stunning. But that opening scene with the kids always bothers me. I don't get why filmmakers have to frontload their movies with a child origin story. Like, imagine American Pie starting with a 6 year old kid longing for sex.
Oliver what e cig do you use?
Im currently using a TC 100.
Yes, I've seen TC 2000. No, I don't remember it
Streets of Rage soundtrack. XD The best.
It is! I was saying to myself hey that sounds like the theme too... hahaha
DO A RETROSPECTIVE FOR LAWRENCE OF ARABIA!!!!!
Oliver Harper looks a little bit like a British James Woods.
Love Empire OF the Sun
HOW TO GET AHEAD IN ADVERTISING rules. This role is the movie I remember Richard E. Grant for the most
Any Star Wars Laserdisc?
Yes I do - The Phantom Menace, Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition and The Star Wars Definitive Collection.
No it's not I have despecialized edition and have never ever had a virus through torrenting in all my life, what you onabout mate?
Tbh I thought you were editing American Psycho haha you never know with "psychotic boyfriends" that Rachel had.
Sounds like Streets of Rage music in the background.
It is indeed.
I agree. The Saint with Kilmer is rubbish. I heard the original TV series was pretty good though.
Aww yeah, Streets of Rage 2 music
did you find your wallet in the end
haha no I left it on a bus.
+Oliver Harper can you do Rambo first blood retrospective and review ?
hi mate can you do some nick love films plz nobody seems to know his films
Sigh... Laserdisc..... i have about 12 left in my collection now... i just cant part with them, Of course they are the Star wars sets, True Lies, Blade runner etc etc
I can't watch Batman Begins or The Dark Knight after The Dark Knight Rises.I hate that movie with a passion.
Now this film was utter toilet. So I had to get it
Tc2000 isn't that bad,I have it on tape
