+GamingTutor '91 as well, safe for some lower budget and modern indie movies, I can't stand modern cinema. I find myself digging trough lists on wikipedia to find forgotten or lost gems from the 30 up until the 80s/90s.
as a 90s kid I'm not at all familiar with laser discs, but its great to see a history of really great movies on that format. also, that anime collection is too real. Compared to all the lames trying to fake their way into the cool anime fandom today, you know someone's a true anime fan when they have a retro collection of it on laser discs. nice collection and vid
My dad had a Laserdisc player back in the 80's, and he gave me a Yamaha Laserdisc player for Christmas. My Godfather used to sell A/V equipment and we got everything at cost. I remember watching a movie and having to flip the disc, I didn't have the fancy player that moved the laser from one side to the other. I also remember having to fish out the second disc to continue watching longer movies. Some companies cheated and put all analog tracks to cut down on data so they didn't have to use multiple sides or discs. I remember looking for Laserdiscs of certain recently released movies, my memory is a bit fuzzy, but I seem to remember at one point it took 6 months after the VHS release before seeing it on Laserdisc. They were $35-40 or more in most cases. Johnny you pulled out two of my Dad's favorite movies Dune and Bladerunner!
Born in '96, avid movie goer today and collector, but 80's movies complete me. I envy those who got to experience them in the moment. Also love me my laserdisc player, super awesome to see this collection of yours!
I love all your videos. I've been watching for a few years now! In your background I always notice your games with the HUGE boxes, like Nomaz etc. I'd love a video where you discuss your big box games like that!🙌
Bonus/special features were actually pioneered on Laser Disc as well! The early discs were just the movie, but in the later years of the formats life, there were quite a few releases with bonus features. In fact the first commentary tracks were done on LD. I actually have some old DVDs in my collection that have the LD commentary tracks 'ported' over to them.
Yep. I had the dvd of "Chasing Amy" and they used the commentary track from the LD. I have since upgraded to the Blu Ray, but I can't remember if they used the old commentary track. I know there was a new commentary track recorded for the Blu Ray, but it's horrid!
Nice collection, and Explorers?! What! There was another one around that time, Flight of the Navigator. Killer movie for the time. And Firestarter is also a Stephen King story. Good shit! And dude, if you haven't already, everyone and their mother should read Harlon Ellis' "I have no mouth and I must scream".
One thing about the LaserDisc technology back in the 80s was it was technically possible to develop a Laserdisc visual novel for the MSX computer. It would have been great if a single title like this had been produced for the educational market as an example. It would be so ahead of its time.
always wanted a laser disc player but couldnt afford one (young) i had a buddy that had one, but he wasnt really into movies, he was more into the rock concert films always loved the sound....but needing to flip the disc and the lack of a decent rental selection in my area kept me with VHS until dvds made the scene
Nice collection! I've got lots of those titles myself, but I still need some of those Macross discs. Especially that DYRL box! Nice to see some love for Black Rain too - that movie rules in so many ways. Anyhow, thanks for sharing! Cheers!
Oh my god, that Goonies laser disc is beautiful, the artwork for the cover 👍 They don't do movie covers (or movies) like this anymore, it's all boring photoshopped crap.
You and I have similar tastes! I own a lot of those movies on LaserDisc...and Commando! I was a snobby little kid that would spend all his allowance on LaserDiscs. I still have all of them and the LD player I bought in 1990. It all works just like new!
Awesome collection man! ! I'll be posting a video with my collection as part of My Moving series. I've got around 650 or so, and dude moving them to the new house was so crazy lol. Love how you described the sound and video details, well done! !
Retro Power Up Yep, filmed a quick video last Friday before I moved them to the new house. I'll have that up at some point. There is a guy in Portland known as the Laserdisc King, he has Thousands of them, and sells his duplicates, which is where I got a lot of them from.
Those laserdisc players are so huge, you feel like a miniature Lego man when they open. Oh and in South Africa, I first saw a LaserDisc film in store in 1991, and it cost R1000 ($100)!
Sweet collection brother! I just picked up Willow on Blu-ray and I am in a time machine. I played the movie so much on beta, I broke the tape. I never had a laser disc collection/player, but I was always envious of my friends that did. Keep up the kick ass videos! Cheers from Texas!
My school library always had these audio/video magazines and every issue would have these catalogs for laserdisc collecting. I always wanted to get into it, but sadly I missed all that.
There's actually a ton of laser discs in Hard Off typically. A friend of mine picked up Never Ending Story on one trip and I found some great anime on another including Space Battleship Yamato. Unfortunately, I don't have a laser disc player here. Side note, every time I hear somebody talk about their laser disc collection it makes me think of SLC Punk.
My former step-father was huge into Laserdiscs because of the Widescreen thing and surround sound. Luckily I got to grow up with and enjoy movies like the Star Wars & Back To The Future trilogy, Ghostbusters and Jurassic Park this way :)
One cool thing about laserdisc is we would think that the video is digital because it's like a CD or a DVD, right? It's not, the video is stored on there as an analog signal. It kind of blows my mind.
Fine video, and I don't know if anyone else has pointed this out but Laserdisc is in fact an analog format, not digital. Still, far superior to VHS, and this is coming from a collector of both as well as Beta, Laserdisc is the way to go for the vintage stuff, especially Star Wars.
Thank you for sharing this as a movie nerd I love Laser Discs but I'm too young to have really been there for 'em. The best part of these is the art for sure I wish they would still release big packaging like this for blu ray even if it doesn't make a lick of sense lol
Dam you Johnny, like I needed another collection hobby! Awesome video, really makes want to collect some 80s classic even though I have no intention of getting a Laser Disc player, just for the display factor. How expensive something like Blade Runner or The Thing generally is? Are they still affordable as it's become an obsolete format or have they already become sought after? Edit: Awesome that you gave Black Rain some love :)
Really great LD collection Johnny ! A lot of retro gamers I know also have a VHS / Beta or LD collection it goes together quite well :D I have about 200 discs.
To me, Neo Geo is like The Laserdisc of Video Games! The size, the quality, the sound, and even the exclusive features! For those who are a fan of video games, and Laserdisc, do check out the Pioneer Laseractive. Just remember got buy one that works properly...
while you had a few anime I'd never watched back in the day your movie collection was like a top something list of movies I love or have sentimental feelings about.
I have a lot of LD's but most are anime. Space Battleship Yamato; the movie collection and all 3 TV seasons. Getter Robo G, Daiku Maryu Gaiking, Wakusei Robo Danguard Ace. Arcadia of My Youth, Crusher Joe, Blade of Kamui, Oh My Goddess. The only domestic LD's I have are the Star Wars Trilogy THX box set. Impressive collection Johnny!
Now we need to see your Betamax collection and about your childhood memories with the Beta and your recordings, rentals, and pre recorded collections and stuff...
Great collection. I just picked up a Laseractive and looking forward to picking some of these up. How many of your anime discs have english subtitles? It seems few were released in English while the majority came out straight Japanese only. I imagine if you like it you just watch it in Japanese and try to figure out what's going on.
I was sooooo close to saying, "You don't have GHOSTBUST- " oh... there it is. One thing I hated about Laserdiscs and DVD's was when they change the original cover art. The classic Ghostbusters cover is iconic. That Laserdisc cover kinda sucks.
Finally! hahaha. Awesome. I LOVE laserdisc. I've only started collecting recently, and I'm completely hooked. I love the art and packaging (especially big beautiful box sets) and the exclusive content (some of which was never even released on DVD). My Star Trek laserdisc collection is going to be insane.
awesome vid! I absolutely LOVE laserdisc! I have a particular love for old school anime and 80s music, so the LD format really speaks to me. I have over 800 disc, mainly anime and music video and concerts. but the sound is awesome!. If you have a high end player like a pioneer cld-97 or the best one like a X9, then it's the absolute best war to watch them on either a certain or a plasma tv. but as a anime fan, the big box sets of anime like the ones from Gundam or Slayers or Ghost In the Shell I still think are the best way to watch those shows. if you get more disc? I hope you show those in another video.
Blind Fury is such a good film and so under-rated. I remember watching this film on my 12th or 13th birthday and its always been one of my most nostalgic action films from the early 1990's. I'm actually quite pleased that someone else has very fond memories of this film. Predator is my second favorite arnold Schwarzenegger film of all time and such a timeless classic. I remember Gall Force, I actually had the vhs subtitled version from US Manga Corps and it is such a lovely film with some very beautiful music and I loved how it ended. Out of all the laserdiscs you have, I'm incredibly jealous of your macross plus laserdiscs. They are simply such a lovely site to behold. It actually really amazes me that streamline pictures and us manga corps actually had their products on the laser disc format.
For those older movies LD is the way to go. Now you have to do a VHS collection. I just watched Lady in White the other day on a S-VHS player with an S-Video upscaler and it doesn't look too bad.
Theres a lot of similarities between your collection and my LD and DVD collection. I wish you could've gone a bit more in depth on the Ghostbusters Criterion disc (especially the fact that most of the special features never made it to later formats).
Man you brought back some great memories project ak-o and robot carnival when they used to air on the sy fy channel back in the early to mid 90s saturday mornings i also remember venus wars vampire hunter d akira and Iria: Zeiram the Animation just to name a few
i own almost all the movies you have on vhs. you have excellent taste in movies. my dad had a laserdisc player back in the day but we werent allowed touch it. lol but i do remember watching alien 3 and robocop 2 at some point on laserdisc.
+KWKBOX I would have to say vinyl, mainly because it is much older than laserdisc but still relevant in many ways. But I cannot overstate how superior laserdisc was at the time to VHS.
I love finding Laserdiscs at local thrift stores when they price them as vinyl records...
Definitely seems like the vinyl equivalent for movies. Really cool! Thanks for bringing them out.
I was born in 91, I grew up watching all of those movies. 80's flicks were by far the best decade for amazing movies, fucking loved them all.

Very cool 😎 I have collected a few myself . As a 52 year old I really appreciate all your content . Such passion 👍❤️ much appreciated good sir
out of any gamer... you have the best stories about gaming. you were like 10 year ahead of everyone, almost like you lived in japan in the 80s and 90s
My dad had a Laserdisc player back in the 80's, and he gave me a Yamaha Laserdisc player for Christmas. My Godfather used to sell A/V equipment and we got everything at cost. This is so creepy! I was just organizing my Laserdiscs !!! and you uploaded a Laserdisc video of all things!
Born in '96, avid movie goer today and collector, but 80's movies complete me. I envy those who got to experience them in the moment. Also love me my laserdisc player, super awesome to see this collection of yours!

those have awesome cover art. What a great format to collect.
my kind of episode!!! nice to watch, thanks!
PROJECT A-KO! yes, i loved that as a kid, gotta go back and watch that now
So, welcome back to another episode....

wow, that is actually legitimately an incredible laserdisc collection. you have *all* the films. And wow, Robot Carnival - a man of taste!
Nice collection, and Explorers?! What! There was another one around that time, Flight of the Navigator. Killer movie for the time.
And Firestarter is also a Stephen King story. Good shit!
And dude, if you haven't already, everyone and their mother should read Harlon Ellis' "I have no mouth and I must scream".
i only have terminator 2 on laser disc. i need to get going on that collection.
+8-Bit Eric stop spamming.

What's funny is, the first movie you show is The Thing, and my mom is out watching that in the living room right now, hahaha XD
always wanted a laser disc player but couldnt afford one (young)
i had a buddy that had one, but he wasnt really into movies, he was more into the rock concert films
always loved the sound....but needing to flip the disc and the lack of a decent rental selection in my area kept me with VHS until dvds made the scene

Nice to see some love for Black Rain too - that movie rules in so many ways. Anyhow, thanks for sharing! Cheers!
My dad loved laser disc I thought it was so cool having it growing up =)
Thank you! I forgot about Explorers. It's free to watch if you have Amazon Prime (for everyone else without the laser disc.)
Action movies will never again reach the greatness achieved in the 80s-90s.
13:00 when the anime collection starts.
Great freakin' video Johnny. I'm gunna have to re-watch this and take some notes on the films/anime I am not familiar with.
OMG. You have the entire Robotech Macross Saga on Laserdisc. I envy you.
Oh my god, that Goonies laser disc is beautiful, the artwork for the cover 👍 They don't do movie covers (or movies) like this anymore, it's all boring photoshopped crap.
Lots of great movies! I have a small LD collection including the Ys anime LDs. I started collecting once I got my Laseractive.
You and I have similar tastes! I own a lot of those movies on LaserDisc...and Commando! I was a snobby little kid that would spend all his allowance on LaserDiscs. I still have all of them and the LD player I bought in 1990. It all works just like new!
Really cool collection. I've not heard of some of the 80's films you have there, gonna have to hunt them down on blu ray.
And that shadow gate soundtrack playing in the background is so good!!!
The Deer Hunter is a Classic, and filmed not too far from where I live, Mingo Junction OH.
that butter knife ain't gonna stop no bullet! ... had to pull out my copy of blind fury after watching this, nice collection
Great laserdiscs! Also, love that "Rygar" music is playing in the background.
Nice Collection! Only thing I hated about LD back in the day was the flipping of the Disc. Also Love the Shadowgate music in the background!

Those laserdisc players are so huge, you feel like a miniature Lego man when they open. Oh and in South Africa, I first saw a LaserDisc film in store in 1991, and it cost R1000 ($100)!
At first, I was like "no Big Trouble in Litle China? SO LAME!" But then I was like "HELL YEAH!!!"
17:15 For people struggling finding the name of that anime, here "iczer one".
My laserdisc collection is front and center. A place of honor in my game room. Hell I still buy them when I find them in the thrift stores.
Man, I dig your enthusiasm! I'm a LD collecot and this was fun to watch, cheers!
I am big into Rutger and Laserdisc. I have Ladyhawk and The Hitcher on LD
I would have to have these beauties framed in my gaming/movie room, amazing collection.
Great movie collection! I just was reminded of blind fury the other day
My former step-father was huge into Laserdiscs because of the Widescreen thing and surround sound. Luckily I got to grow up with and enjoy movies like the Star Wars & Back To The Future trilogy, Ghostbusters and Jurassic Park this way :)
6:53 "I am the laaaaaaw!" :D
One cool thing about laserdisc is we would think that the video is digital because it's like a CD or a DVD, right? It's not, the video is stored on there as an analog signal. It kind of blows my mind.
Awesome collection man. I never owned a laser disc player myself. Had the good old VHS. Lol Love your videos man they always bring me back.
Fine video, and I don't know if anyone else has pointed this out but Laserdisc is in fact an analog format, not digital. Still, far superior to VHS, and this is coming from a collector of both as well as Beta, Laserdisc is the way to go for the vintage stuff, especially Star Wars.
I always liked LD, just never was able to find them until the price started to shoot up or the discs would be scratched badly.
Thank you for sharing this as a movie nerd I love Laser Discs but I'm too young to have really been there for 'em. The best part of these is the art for sure I wish they would still release big packaging like this for blu ray even if it doesn't make a lick of sense lol
I have Conan on every imaginable format! Amazing flick and so underrated! Great video AGAIN my friend!
NES Rygar Opening Stage theme - from when he shows Blade Runner to Conan the Destroyer. Nice!!
I really enjoyed seeing your Laser Disk collection.
Awesome collection. So jealous.
Of course I wouldn't trade the quality of bluray for it today, but man that artwork though.
Nice collection. What kind of player do you have?
You're getting a thumbs up cos *a)* that sweet Laserdisc collection and *b)* that Diamond Dogs t-shirt.
Really great LD collection Johnny ! A lot of retro gamers I know also have a VHS / Beta or LD collection it goes together quite well :D I have about 200 discs.
Blade runner is my favorite movie as well! I can always have a good time watching it.
I still rock my laserdiscs
I loved it that your favourite movie of all time is Blade Runner... mine too.

The Thing, Blade Runner and Alien right off the bat... this guy rocks!
Haha...I was surprised Big trouble in little China wasn't there, then it pops up in the 2nd bunch. Very nice collection mate.
we pretty much have the exact same taste in movies. I own 98% of those. :) just as nostalgic about them as well.
One of the few memories I have with my dad is watching star wars on laser disc.
Episode 1 is the best quality ever on laserdisc I hear. Besides the High Def laserdiscs that came out in Japan.
+donhonk Yeah, Episode I looks really good on Laserdisc. Even the audio is better in the Laserdisc version (in comparison to DVD).
My collection really got a boost this spring when I was given like 70 movies. I don't have any anime though, the stuff I am looking for is pricey.
I've watched Street Fighter the Movie, Judge Dredd, Anaconda, Top Dog, Batman, Casper. That's all i remember. LaserDisc was a part of my childhodd.
True Romance, is my favorite movie hands down. I could watch it all day.
That Porco Rosso is a Hong Kong release. For some reason, a TON of anime, including most of Dragon Ball GT, got released there.
I was sooooo close to saying, "You don't have GHOSTBUST- " oh... there it is. One thing I hated about Laserdiscs and DVD's was when they change the original cover art. The classic Ghostbusters cover is iconic. That Laserdisc cover kinda sucks.

My first room mate had some laser discs and we ended up watching the first 3 star wars and most of the bond movies that way. It was totally cool.
awesome vid! I absolutely LOVE laserdisc! I have a particular love for old school anime and 80s music, so the LD format really speaks to me. +Gil Roland Wow you are a true LD collector!
Yup, my favorite movie of all time also, Blade Runner with Harrison Ford.
It actually really amazes me that streamline pictures and us manga corps actually had their products on the laser disc format.
I was able to recognize every movie by the cover alone. And I have seen Blind Fury. So have you seen Split Second?
For those older movies LD is the way to go. Now you have to do a VHS collection. I just watched Lady in White the other day on a S-VHS player with an S-Video upscaler and it doesn't look too bad.
I remeber vhs but i dont remeber seeing lazer disk in the 90s when i did not know about it untill i was on the internet.
Theres a lot of similarities between your collection and my LD and DVD collection. I wish you could've gone a bit more in depth on the Ghostbusters Criterion disc (especially the fact that most of the special features never made it to later formats).
Man you brought back some great memories project ak-o and robot carnival when they used to air on the sy fy channel back in the early to mid 90s saturday mornings i also remember venus wars vampire hunter d akira and Iria: Zeiram the Animation just to name a few
nice video, cool to see you commentate on laser disc!
Neat to see you have laser discs, I love them.
I can remember a friend of mine had jason goes to hell on laserdisc in germany.
That was the only uncut version that u could get at that time.
i own almost all the movies you have on vhs. you have excellent taste in movies. my dad had a laserdisc player back in the day but we werent allowed touch it. lol but i do remember watching alien 3 and robocop 2 at some point on laserdisc.
Awesome collection man! I love so many of those movies, and I'm going to watch the ones I've not seen (not many). :D
Wow, what a collection. The only LDs I have are Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks. Do you still have your player?
Which is cooler Vinyl or LaserDisc?
+KWKBOX I would have to say vinyl, mainly because it is much older than laserdisc but still relevant in many ways. But I cannot overstate how superior laserdisc was at the time to VHS.
