2022 Mazda 6 Skyactiv G194 Homura review 4K - Is old school the best school?

  • The current Mazda 6 is quite an old model by market standards, having been launched way back in 2012. It has undergone several transformations since then, but it's still the same car and what it proposes is quite different to any of its rivals. It's not a class leader - it really couldn't be since it is quite old - but it's still a great, desirable and well priced car that for the right buyer might be the only sedan worth buying on the market right now.

    meanwhile, I'm on year 8 on my BM (Mazda 3 Gen4) waiting for the next gen for the 3rd year in a row...
    and (as a very tech savvy person) hope that there are NO f'n touchscreens everywhere. Especially in the MX 30 - drove it no more than 5min... same as with some newer Ford and Audi

    I own one of these but it is a 2,5l turbo 2023.
    I found your analysis of the last mazda 6 very balanced based on my own experience.
    My turbo mazda 6 is one of the best choices for a sedan for cars under $75,000 Australian dollars. I paid $47,000 for mine in December 2023.

    If you compare the Mazda 6 with Passat, then you should also compare the price. I know, the ideal car is one with all current assists, the most current technic, compact design but space for luggage like a truck, and all that for not even paying anything :-)

    • @OneTireFire
      @OneTireFire  2 роки тому +4

      Well, the Passat is better in every single measurable way, but the 6 is a unique, style-conscious alternative. It's also more affordable, and in the most basic trims, better equipped too, and unlike the Passat, I think this is the kind of car that will make you look back at it as you lock it and are walking towards your home :D The Passat? You might forget where you parked it :P
      Really looking forward to the Mazda 6's rear-wheel drive replacement model, though!

    And on wheels, that's another thing, I don't know why many companies insist on putting oversized wheels on cars, often locking them to the spec of the car!
    For example, that a thing that might make people buy the base spec only here, it's the only one you can get with 17" wheels, when the mid and top specs come only with 19" wheels!!
    The 16" wheels on my 2008 6 are big enough, with a good set of tyres already costing me about €600! - how much are good tyres on the larger wheels, €800+?! 😯😂😀🤘

    • @OneTireFire
      @OneTireFire  Рік тому +1

      I wouldn’t put wheels bigger than 17 on any car, to be honest. Anything larger and it ruins not only the ride, but also a car’s ability to be driven fast on slightly uneven tarmac. The added cost makes big wheels even less desirable, as good as they may look…

    Hmm from the title do I take it that ye get the Homura with the 2.5L 194hp (probably automatic only!) in the U.S.? ( or whatever you are, when you're in a left hand drive car)...
    Here in Ireland, we get the car in three specs, with three distinct engine choices per spec...
    Starting with a 2.0L 145hp (which is loads of power already, when my 2008 1.8L 6 "only" has 118hp and it's plenty quick to get you in trouble! 😀)...
    The base engine is available in 6 speed manual and automatic, though why anybody would want the auto when its' second slower to sixty and €3,000 dearer, I don't know!
    Then we get the Humora, with a manual only 2.0L 165hp engine, which really is the pick of the bunch (indeed being the old top spec with the new burgendy leather that featured in the 100th Anniversary models added)...
    Then we get the 2.5L automatic only 194hp top spec, which only had a few new bells and whistles added to make it a new spec, along with its' silly automatic (the latter thing not being very popular here!)...
    Anyway, I'm curious what other engines and gearboxes ye get, when ye get the higher power engine here on what would be a mid spec, as said here 🤔😯😀🤘

    • @OneTireFire

      Thanks for watching the video!
      I actually reviewed the car in Romania, where I live, and we also get the same three versions (G145, G165 and the top 194 hp 2.5, which is only available as an automatic. It also used to be available with the excellent 2.2 liter diesel, but that was discontinued a few years ago..

    • @tanner1ie
      @tanner1ie Рік тому

      @@OneTireFire Indeed I checked the specs there after leaving my comment which I'd initially left before watching the video while in work...
      Looking up the Romanian Mazda website, it reinforces the bizarre and very First World frustration I get that companies give basically different specs and often entirely different models to different countries and often suddenly change or withdraw models seemingly at the drop of a hat, seemingly not caring what individual customers actually want!
      For example (not that I care about automatics at all, but they help illustrate the point), as said we get the 145hp engine as a manual and an automatic and the 165hp as a manual only, while ye only get the 145hp as a manual, yet get the 165hp as a manual and automatic as well...
      Similarly the U.K. gets two mid specs, a black leather version (which we actually had for about a year until about two years ago), and also the Humora which they charge about £1,000 extra for and call it a Kuro Edition - all in it's all very confusing and strange! 😯😂😀🤘
      Also indeed, we had two versions of the 2.2L diesel engine here for a long time and indeed for about ten years they were the main engines available here for the 6...
      From about 2012 if not earlier, while you could always get the 6 with a petrol engine, it was only in the base spec, with a diesel engine available in that too, with the mid and top specs having the two different diesels in them...
      Petrol wasn't available in the mid spec until they refreshed it in December 2018 and not back in the top spec until about 18 months ago, when they retired all the diesels in the 6, yet they still offer the fourth gen 3 with a diesel and (surely automatic only) hybrid options...
      (While in the period Ireland lost mid and top spec petrols, the U.K. never did!)
      If they make something, they should sell it everywhere! 😯😂😀🤘

    2:50 - I'm pretty sure it's only the 2.5L engine that has cylinder deactivation, probably why it's seemingly the most efficient 6 even though it's the most powerful 6 and relatively sluggish with its' torque converter automatic...
    Of course it's the quickest 6 by default, but it would likely be a second or more quicker to 100kph if it had a 6 speed manual or a 8+ speed dual clutch automatic*.
    (As you may or may not know, with the same amount of gears, particularly with a torque converter, an automatic is slower to accelerate than a manual, however give it more gear it will match or very slightly beat a manual in straight acceleration ...
    Anyway, I really wish we could get that engine with a manual gearbox, but of course the "powers that be", have killed off 99% of manuals over 2.0L!! 😯😀🤘

    • @OneTireFire
      @OneTireFire  Рік тому +1

      I’ll have to check the cylinder deactivation thing, I don’t remember reading about it back when I tested the car.
      And of course, I too would have loved to see this engine hooked up to a manual in the 6.
      Let’s see what Mazda has planned for the new rear-wheel drive 6 :D

    • @tanner1ie
      @tanner1ie Рік тому

      @@OneTireFire Indeed I've heard rumours of a new rear wheel drive saloon coming from Mazda, but I don't think any have been confirmed, while indeed the company has been very slow and seemingly reluctant to release any new car that isn't a hatchback, SUV or crossover, of course the 6 has had constant refreshes since 2013 in Europe (with the third gen 6 having launched in 2012 in Japan!), when the 3 got a fourth gen in 2018, we haven't seen the RX-Vision since it was displayed as non drivable concept car in 2015, outside of it appearing in Gran Turismo, while even the current generation of the MX-5 is getting just a bit old, having launched in 2015!
      And on the MX-5, the refreshed 184hp 2.0L literally only became available to purchase here about a month ago here (outside of the literally ten 30th anniversary edition models we got here!)
      We always had the standard 1.5L engine and the old 2.0L engine until they ran out, then we couldn't get an MX-5 with a 2.0L engine for a couple of years!
      Also, whether anything comes of it, it was interesting to see that Mazda relisted the MX-6 trademark a few years ago, IF they even intend to use it again!
      (The MX-6 was a sister car to the Ford Probe they built in the late 80s until the late 90s, while they haven't released anything similar since!)
      😯😀🤘
      All in, I really wish the company would release more fun cars and take some tiny risks, before we're all killed by boring SUVs and electric cars!

      I did throw it into a few corners, but I can't say I experienced what you describe specifically. It might have something to do with the very soft suspension.

      I have to clarify that I was pushing it all out on a very tight touge course - intentionally breaking the traction limit. Suspension tuning is excellent and probably best in class but still a large FWD sedan at the end of the day. Still a very good car. @@OneTireFire

      Am încercat 2.2-ul doar pe CX-5 și mi s-a părut foarte mișto, mai ales cât de elastic și puternic era și faptul că se tura extrem de ușor peste 5,000 rpm. Nu știu de ce l-a scos Mazda din ofertă acum, probabil nu mai corespundea la noxe, dar nici cu motoarele aspirate pe benzină mașina nu e greoaie, deși l-aș evita pe cel de bază, de sub 150 de cai.

       @AM 04:11 Hey! As far as I know, the 2.5-liter from Mazda is pretty bulletproof as long as you look after it. It's only been around for about 10 years, so it's still too early to definitively tell if it's got exceptional reliability, but so far they have proved to be quite dependable.
