- Arranged for Classical Guitar. Score/tab -and now a 40-minute tutorial - available through my site www.shaunmurray.co.uk. We used to play this fiddle tune in The Ray Peters Band and it went down well so I thought I'd try it as a solo guitar arrangement. Composed by Jay Ungar it was used as the musical backdrop for the TV film The Civil War.
Beautifully done
Thanks, appreciate that :-)
Mesmerisingly beautiful. Thank you.
Appreciate that very much Will, thank you :-)
Each time I play this it's like the first time I have heard it. I can't get enough.
thats a fantastic way of putting it I feel exactly the same
Awesome, such a haunting melody❤
This is a master Piece I first herd it by Marilyn Trotter ,She played Fiddle with the Flying J. Wranglers , Songs of New Mexico, Glad to find it on youtube . Also some good music on the Guitar by several people , Its a song you Don"t get tired of !!
Thanks Ken I fully agree it's a piece one never tires of hearing. Thanks for listening to my take on it, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed my version - yes, that's the strength of Ungar's composition, it will sound good whatever treatment it's given
Sorry, I can't think of a better word that "marvelous". Surely there is one.
I find this to be perfect when I slow down the tempo on the little gear. Very beautiful sound. My heart is happy. Jay Ungar describes the song as coming out of "a sense of loss and longing" after the annual Ashokan Music & Dance Camps ended. It is true. We hate to leave our fellow musicians.
Thanks for watching and commenting - yes the reason it was composed is very poignant and I relate to it very much. It's such a fine composition and I agree it offers a different perspective with a slower tempo. :-)
Thank you :-) Glad you enjoyed my version :-)
Well played! The guitar - is the best !
Wonderful phrasing and emotion Shaun! (Imho) Itʻs the best guitar version on UA-cam. This was your post that got me to subscribe...Thank you!
Thanks for such a kind appraisal :-)
All I can say is very good and Ty
Wayne Andrews Thanks Wayne, glad you like it :-)
woooow
Thanks so much for watching, I hope you like my version :-)
Thanks so much :-))
Forgot to mention , that your guitar has some kind of special tone..My classical should be burnt , after hearing yours..lol
PB
Please tell me you have some sheet music I can purchase?!
Hi Jim, yes - please visit the site shaunmurray. biz and you can order it through there.. Thanks, Shaun
This is by far the most beautiful rendition of Ashokan Farewell on guitar I've ever listened to. Thank you so much for sharing and BRAVO!
Much appreciated, thank you :-)
Agreed.
Wow! I bet Ken Burns is kicking himself that he didn't have this arrangement also to add to his "Civil War" series. This version would have complemented certain portions so well!
+Ben Holmberg Thanks for such kind feedback Ben - my version featuting in Ken Burns' film, wow there's a thought :-) ..thanks again.
@@ironmonger100 Isn't a guitar version of Ashokan Farewell included in the series? I remember something like it when Lee surrenders, it made the scene 100000x more somber
@@hunnicut5401 To my shame I've never seen the series but it was recently re-run on the BBC here in the UK so I plane to catch up over the holidays, I'm looking forward to it very much
Great version of a beautiful song. The Ken Burns civil war documentary is now on UK netflix for those interested
Yes, they do use a solo guitar version in the film.
This is very beautiful. I admire your artistry and skill.
+Con Maloney Thanks so much Con..
Such a beautiful tune. I too fell in love with it back when the Civil War series was on TV. Shaun, your rendition is up there along with the Doc and the lady as the best I've heard.
Thanks for such a kind appraisal Hugh :-)
Outstanding.
Glad you liked it, thank you so much :-)
I'm not crying.
Someone's slicing onions around here, must be.
Haha, thanks Stefan - to be told that something I play is capable of evoking emotion is the best possible compliment :-)
This always makes me weepy. It sounds like a bitter-sweet memory given voice
That happens!!
This is the first time that I have heard Ashokan Farewell played on the guitar, it sounds beautiful, what an outstanding musician.
Thank you so much :-)
Absolutely beautiful in all respects. The best guitar rendition of this beautiful tune EVER, and there are some fine ones out there. Thank you for sharing your superb playing.
Thanks for such a kind appraisal. Season's greetings!
A masterful performance. This is a melody that grabs you by the heart and throat, and Shaun Murray gets full marks.
Bless you David, thanks and I'm glad you enjoyed it
Hi Shaun, I really enjoy your work. Each time I learn a new piece on the guitar and think that I have mastered it, I perform a "reality check". I hold my breath and watch as your mastery of the guitar, gently guides my ego back down to earth, but hey.. thanks for raising the bar. I can't speak for everyone, but you inspire me and I believe you make me a better player.
Very nice! I've heard a number of arrangments of this tune. I like this one the best. Your performance of the arrangement is equally impressive, especially the work high up the neck. I don't know if it was flawless, but it sure sounded like it.
Fantastic performance. Sounds like a whole orchestra! Nice playing. Thanks for posting and making the tabs available.
Thanks, It's a beautiful composition and I think it works well for Classical guitar.
This will be played (guitar) at my wedding June 23rd in New Sweden Maine by a friend of the groom
Wow thanks Amanda, I'm pleased you like my version. And congratulation on the wedding - I wish you a lifetime of love, happiness and music :-)
First heard this song on Ken Burn's Civil War Series - Intrigued with
this part of our history and the words and music of Ashokan Farewell just bring the feelings and reality of that war closer to home.....
Same here
¡Greetings!
¿Are You arrangements available for purchase?
Thank You
Hi - yes, absolutely, at shaunmurray co uk ...thanks, look forward to hearing
@@ironmonger100 Shaun, what a dope I am; I've alreadybought tabs from You.

Wonderful arrangement Shaun. Your performance is spot on and played with soul. Your guitar sounds awesome.
Cheers,
allen
The best song I’ve heard on UA-cam and you did it the best. Thanks for this beautiful song.
That's so kind, thanks friend 🙂
I have NEVER heard a more beautiful arrangement of this song for guitar (or any other instrument). Your hands just flow across the neck of the guitar like water. Thanks for such a beautiful video.
I can't thank you enough for such kind feedback, bless you 🙂
Such a lovely version of this most iconic of melodies.
+Derek Stocker Thanks Derek for such kind feedback :-)
I also play the piece in "Dmaj" but I've come to the conclusion, it has a better tenor in the key of "Amaj."
That's very true, the key of D makes the highest note very high (a 15th fret G), the key of A does make that sweeter. However, for variation, I drop the melody an octave the second time I play that theme (about 1:04) on the video... and I'm not sure that would be possible in the key of A
Absolutely the most perfect guitar rendition of this song!
That's so kind, thanks Henry
This is a beautiful arrangement and performance Shaun!
Thanks so much Tom 🙂
Bravo. As fine a version ever played.
Thanks, I appreciate that very much
@sejd51 Thanks, yes - happy with the sound on this, and I'm pleased you enjoyed it :-)
Thanks Tug - it's a beautiful piece of music and I'm pleased you like my interpretation of it. Bless you.
@frwyguy Thanks for watching and for the kind feedback, much appreciated :-)
This tune could be played on a kazoo and I would still cry
Yes, it's a beautiful composition, it really is, amnd thank you for watching my version 🙂
How long would it take for a beginner to be able to play this?? Just started playing
Hi Brent - thanks for watching ... that's not an easy question to answer. There are some barre chord shapes in there so you'd need to make sure that technique is something you can manage, and it's a fingerstyle piece so you'd need to have got to grips with the 'classical' right-hand technique. As long as those two boxes can be checked I think it's quite an accessible piece
Thanks Brad, details of all my transcriptions are at shaunmurray. biz
@oldwhtman That's kind Mike, thank you, happy you like my arrangement
@ksn121 Well, thanks for watching, I'm happy you liked my version :-)
Bravissimo splendida esecuzione grazie
That's very kind, grazie mille
@BrianFamousSecond Thanks friend, pleased you enjoyed it :-)
I have heard many versions but this is the best I have ever laid my ear phone on...great job and thanks
Hi what tuning is this in. Absolutely stunningly played.
Thanks so much, I'm happy you like my version - it's in standard tuning: EADGBE
Beautiful arrangement and playing although I'm surprised you didn't play with drop d
I think you're right Rory, looks like I missed a trick, the dropped D would certainly have given it more depth, particularly the section where I dropped the melody an octave
@@ironmonger100 thanks for your reply. Beautiful playing. I think I'll be buying this arrangement next, so maybe I'll try it with drop d;). I can now play always on my mind (I got that last week) not to your standard mind you.
@@Rory99M Good luck with it Rory :-)
Fantastic playing! Just started learning this song👍
Thank you, appreciate that - and good luck with it 🙂
I feel like crying and i don't know why
Well, thanks for watching and if I make the listener emotional when I play, that's just about the best compliment I could receive, and it's what I strive for :-) Thank you
Very nice arrangement. I have the Lehmann-Haupt arrangement. They both have their individual beauty.
Thanks Dean, glad you enjoyed it :-)
Lovely. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Wayne, appreciated :-)
Good to hear from ya!! And thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed my version :-)
@degasE1 Thanks David, happy you like it :-)

Thanks for such a kind comment :-)
I appreciate that very much thankyou :-)
Gorgeous tune beautifully played. Thank you.
Thank you, I appreciate that very much :-)
Thanks indeed Don, glad you enjoyed it
Outstanding sir! I try to play it on the tin-whistle with varying success ( to double the notes, you have to blow twice as hard, and I, as the player, don't know if it is strained or perfect). But my hat is doffed in your general direction sir.
Fine playing of a fine tune.
Pax
Thanks for such kind feedback Con, pleased you enjoyed my take on the tune
@@ironmonger100 May there be joy in your heart and good grace flow through your fingers, always.
Pax dude
@BoxDoc20 That's kind, thank you :-)
I am 75 years old and just took up the violin a year ago. Ashokan Farewell is one song i absolutely have to learn and am working on it now. Loved your guitar version. It was quite beautiful and very soothing.

@van1976 Thanks friend :-)
@Perevedko Thankyou :-)
Truly beautiful..
That's kind, thanks Leo :-)
That's kind, thanks :-)
Beautiful! I think that Jay must have also written Ashokan Farewell with the classical guitar in mind. 💖💖
Thanks so much - I think it's always a testament to a great composition when it suits another medium that the one for which it was originally composed. There are lyrics to it written by somebody else I guess.. and you could hear it working for a choir, a piano, a guitar and others.
Very nice, Shaun..
Appreciate that Bob, thank you 🙂
Awesome. Thank you.
Thanks, appreciate that very much 🙂
For another beautiful version of this lovely tune, please listen to Irish violinist Rhoda Barfoot at ua-cam.com/video/QcQ4nTiBqJ4/v-deo.html
Fabulous! I would love to learn this. I pray that you have offered it for free on your website.
Your guitar playing is so elegant ~ it takes me away!
As always Shaun ~ thank you for sharing your gift! (*_*)
