The Black Lanner is a fast medium omnimech which was built right as the Battle of Tukayyid started. Built in response to the Placement Trials right before the Invasion, the Lanner was not designed with "Inner Sphere" warfare in mind, but it still found a place and a niche.

Love the Black Lanner. It's not a Stormcrow or a Cauldron-Born, but it's very solid.

I'm an absolute fan of this design... it's an absolute bane to light 'mechs, is great for raids and outflanking, and can absolutely kill a heavy in the right situations. I also disagree that it's not great when fighting the Inner Sphere. It's got the firepower of many Inner Sphere heavies and it can effectively perform hit and run attacks. This deadly design can control the battlefield when there are multiple objectives. One favorite personal configuration of mine is to mount 2 ER Large lasers, 3 additional double heat sinks and a targeting computer.

The Black Lanner is a very decent Mech with a lot of useful configurations.
The speed is really impressive and under the right circumstances the Mech works really well.
The problem is that lack of jump jets means that the Black Lanner needs a lot of flat, open terrain to make use of it´s speed.
A smart opponent will try to draw a Black Lanner into restricting terrain (woods, hills or urban) to negate the speed advantage.
If the Black Lanner can´t use it´s superior speed, the mediocre armor and the rather small pod space become an issue.
It is also important to remember that speed does not offer as much protection against Clan opponents as against IS forces.
There are a lot of Clan Mechs that are capable of hitting a Black Lanner even at full speed and this Mech can´t afford many hits.
Personally I like fast Mechs like this one but for general combat service the Storm Crow is probably to the saver bet.

My son plays Clans most times, and the Black Lanner has been in his forces almost since he started playing. That thing is rough to fight against. Always ALWAYS flanking me!

Fast and agile, I would still make it a bit slower + MASC to just pack more gear on it. But then, it would be "A Stormcrow with a MASC"...

The Dominion does not have much experience fielding these things, but we did have to fight a bunch during that kerfuffle with the Hell's Horses and Ice Hellions in the early 3060s. Rumor has it that this omnimech was the reason the Hellions kept losing so badly that the Horses got fed up and absorbed them.

The Black Lanner is more of the designs I have little issues with. Its close to optimal for what it was designed for.
It is however less flexible than a Stormcrow or Nova, due to its heavy focus on a powerful engine. That does give it a good space in an army.
It's biggest problem is the actual miniatures of it are asymmetrical.

If only the Wraith was a bit easier to fit out with scout gear or anything other than energy weapons then the Black Lanner would have some serious IS competition for its role.

We rigged a battle computer to say "ShadowFat," Instead of Black Lanner. One, 'cause Black Lanner kind of a long name for a mech, and two, because its basically an overweight ShadowCat.

This is the only mech in Living Legends that scares me. I can 1v1 a Kodiak or Atlas with a Catapult with 2 erppc and 4 lb2x... A blanner is just so fast it can hit and fade while also being heavily armed.

      Couldn't disagree harder.
They make a ton of narrative sense with the miniaturization of technologies in the clans so of course it would sense. Using real world analogies, we go from 8.8 cannons on Tiger tanks and tracked flak cannons to shoulder mounted rockets capable piercing armored vehicles and knocking out aircraft.
Or, if ya prefer, from room sized giant computers to PCs with brick monitors to tablets and smart phones.
We already had things like the Fireball popping up and Elementals exist, so there is no reason they wouldn't make "minimechs" or "super elementals." It also lines up perfectly with the Clans abhorring waste and their inordinate boner for mechs over other equipment. Sure, you could make vehicles but instead get these vicious little bastards to cover more ground taken from the Inner Sphere while using more Clan warriors with equal or less resources.
Honestly, I think the only reason they didn't keep going this route is the same reason we didn't see more combine arms for the Inner Sphere post Tukayyid.
Because if you start using things that make sense, you are gonna run out of Mechs in Battletech real quick :D
