Very impressive Japanese structural codes and requirements with regards to earthquake events. Are all mid-high rise buildings there have base isolation system? Sadly, we cannot do much about tsunami because of sheer pressure it brings.

I'm Japanese living in Tokyo. Japanese are used to earthquakes, so we might look calm compared to foreigners. Restaurant and store staffs are trained to protect customers. But 3.11 was huge even in Tokyo.

In Japan during earthquakes, it's safer to stay inside the building than outside unlike in other countries 😉. Amazing, their buildings are dependable/earthquake proof! If it weren't for that destructive tsunami, maybe no lives were lost then.

17th Sept 2011 at about 8pm was the first time I experienced a quake,it was 6.5 in magnitude and epicentre was about a hundred km away from my home, well I was only 8years old and outside there was a thunderstorm,so no electricity
The quake remained for about 30sec but I was shaking for 30min
