      because it's in tokyo. first, their building is strong as a tank in the first place. second, the distance between epicenter and tokyo are 450km, so it's far enough.

      @@imamfajar930 Although it was still worse in Tokyo than was immediately expected because the fault rupture went so far to the south. The initial early warning only went as far south as Fukushima, but shaking at the level high enough to usually cause such a warning extended to Tokyo. The warning system has been updated since to work around the fact that the immediate seismic data can't tell apart a M9 like this from an M8, as the difference is mostly in how large an area is affected due to the longer length of fault line shaken.

      Lighting in major public buildings in Japan usually has two or three anchor points, instead of one. And they are bolted to plates in the ceiling to prevent falling on people.

    Japanese engineers construct their building in such a way that whenever there's an earthquake the buildings & skyscrapers sway instead of crumbling down. Salute to the Japanese engineers. 👍👍

    I used to work for All Nippon as a pilot flying the 767. We were actually the last plane to land at NRT prior to the earthquake. We were on the plane for 8 hours after landing because they had evacuated the terminal and immigration. Best behaved passengers I have ever had on a plane.

      @@AmericanPatriot-1776 Some things can't be helped. All Earthquake resistant buildings are only made to *completely* hold against Earthquakes upto 8.0 Magnitude. Beyond that is just it being tested in reality.
      Those buildings collapsing in an once in a millennium earthquake isn't the fault of their construction

    Damn 9.1 is strong as hell. I'm from CA so I've had my share of earthquakes, but nothing like a 9.1...that looks terrifying and probably felt like an eternity.

    My father was at Narita Airport just a few days before the disaster. He still talks about it today; that if he didn't cut his business trip short, he would've experienced it first hand.

      We are trained to this situation at an early age. I experienced the 2011 earthquake as a child. Now that I am in university I still have nightmares of what happened. My family lost our home in the tsunami and my grandparents were there trapped. I never saw them again after waving goodbye to them that day as I go to school.

    I am from Jamaica where we also get earthquakes. I have NEVER in my life seen an earthquake this long and strong! It was well over a minute long! . It is no wonder they had the kind of damage and loss of life that it did. RIP to the victims,
