Nice simple fly - has all that it needs with minimal materials and versatile to boot!. Squirrel does absorb water for in the meniscus fishing but it does hold a floatant well for a higher riding fly. Find that pre-cut and blended dubbing can be convenient but frequently prefer to cut and preen (as required) the fur right off the hide for more control. Thanks for sharing!
Great techniques you showed in this video. I learned a lot here.
Thanks Cheech, great buggy pattern. I love squirrel too, and making guard hair "hackle". Thanks again. 👍
Hey Joe! How is your fishing season going? Been doing well with the Smallmouth bass - got an 18 incher on my 4wt (it took a #12 PT nymph) last week - was a real circus! Cheers! Hank
Hank Vana2 I like taking it of the hide as needed too, that's how I started. Fishing? Aside from my 3 favorite season openers, trout, walleye & bass - April through June, it's been almost non existent. Been too busy for "fun" stuff sorry to say. That must've been great fun, 18" smallie on a 4wt. Congrats!
Sorry to hear that you are under the gun :-( Hope you get a chance to get some time on the water. My best fly this season has been a 1 1/2" long #10 clouser-style streamer tied with groundhog guard hair tail and wing, gold wire body, a ginger hackle (for pectoral fins) and bead-chain eyes - looks like a bass fry and everything in the river has been chowing down on it. Hank
Hank Vana2 sounds great. Take a look at Ralph's Ruff Chuck (Ralph Long of Ralph's Flybox) woodchuck and ruffed grouse pattern. Looks like a carp style fly, pass for nymph/streamer. I've done well with it in the past. Take care Hank and thanks.
Joe, I looked up the Ruff Chuck - looks good, might tie up a few. Guess that it would sink fast and have a pronounced jigging action. My local rivers are fast moving, rocky and shallow so the fly I mentioned is sparsely tied on a streamer 2x hook and lightly weighted (gold colored 28 awg steel wire from the Dollar Store for the body) to ride horizontally with a slight jigging motion when stripped. Could send a picture if you like. Cheers Joe!
When you shave the squirrel do you keep the fluff in or pick it out?
When you make your squirrel dubbing, do you use the entire pelt? Just the back and sides? tail?
Kevin Andry everything but the tail
Really cool looking scraggly caddis. I want some of that caddis dun CDC now too. Trouble is, trouthunter doesn't have that color in bulk size anymore. Just 3.5 G size in small feathers. It is not cost effective to ship that amount to Maine from Idaho. I will keep watching both you and trouthunter. Maybe they will get it back in stock on the website soon. Thanks for sharing. Good thing I can live without it for awhile. All the best, Sean
Sean Mooney we have the bulk bags.
