Great to see you here, I love your channel! Makes me homesick for my adoptive home of Clare where I caught many's the fish and was first inspired by your sea fly fishing videos. I'll bet we probably know several anglers in common...Damien W, Tomas P, John W, Derek H... Had a great time exploring the coast from Miltown up to Fanore and will always have a special place in my heart for the area around Liscannor Bay :)
Chris I love your videos and music selections! When I heard those first few notes and Danko's plaintive voice, I knew the stage was set for a great tie-along session :) I must grab a copy of Gary's book including that study, sounds fascinating. As a novice fly angler and tier , it's especially helpful to hear authorities like yourself explain not just the process of tying but also the application e.g. when & why to use certain patterns. Thanks as ever, Seán
Thanks Sean. You know its all about the things we love. This is what I love. Gary had the same approach to the sport as I do although I hardly see myself in the same league. What I mean to say is wanting to know. I have this approach with most things I come across while in nature. I will see something and then I will try to understand what it is I am seeing. When it comes to making flies it is as important to me to know why and when as it is to making the perfect palmer. I recommend taking photo or video in the water and then coming back and looking up whatever you can find on that bug. At some point your study will all pay off. You don't need all the flies you just need the good ones. I am no authority but thank you. just like you I am out there trying my best to figure it out. I love it.
Glad you liked it. Gary is perhaps the expert at the Caddis fly and his curiosity into understanding the insect and its relationship to the trout is like the old-world chef in the kitchen. It works and it makes sense. All the best.
I will agree to that. The Griffith gnat is another good one with limited materials. My hats are off to Gary Lafontaine. Maybe it is only 3 materials but it was hours of observation and stream study into the life cycle of the caddis. For the love of it. Good fortune to you and yours.
very nice I have his Jim Teeny Gary La Fontaine pro fly line on some of my reels, I also have met Jim Teeny, do you have the recipe for this fly inc hook and size Thanks Mark
You know the important thing is the antron (cream) for the bubble the rest depends on your preference and the type and color caddis that you are hoping to cover. I would say sizes 12-16 are good basic sizes and you can use a tmc100 standard dry fly hook. Tan is basic and covers many caddis so a tan dubbing as shown and if the body is tan and you are working with a size 12 hook Uni 8/0 tan thread. Comparadun deer hair short for the wing. loose Maroon dubbing. You can vary look at the bugs but this is basic all around.
Gary LaFontaine is owed a debt of gratitude and I tell his name every time I catch a fish on one of his patterns. RIP Gary, your legacy lives on.
Looks the business. A great tie as always Chris. Thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge. Good wishes to you.

Great video and tunes,, so that’s 3 materials. Antron- dubbing and deer hair? Seems the best flies always have the least amount of material.

@@ChrisWalklet No doubt he did his homework and came up with a great pattern. Same to you and yours.
