  • This is just my thoughts about the CGE pro mount that I recommissioned with the ONSTEP kit that Chad Gray builds. He also makes a kit for the original Celestron CGE now to so if anyone is thinking about resurrecting an old mount then give him a shout graydigitalarts.com/
Or look into the ONSTEP system as it's a game changer.

That thing is a BEAST! Looks like a great value on a second hand hefty mount.

Cheers Jason yeah it's certainly a beast of a thing certainly not a grab & go like Celestron tried to promote in the video, damn thing nearly broke my back when I put it in the obsy lol.

Hey Tich, that’s a cracking mount and setup mate! 0.08!!! That’s ridiculous, my guiding is crap in comparison, .7 mostly, I used to be happy with it, but now!🤣 I hope you’re charging the spiders rent, leaving their cobwebs everywhere!! Just a thought, if you want a tedious job, cut up some sticky back carpet tiles into strips and stick them on the aluminum parts of your roof! It will stop condensation forming and dripping on your gear!!🤣 Well worth spending the cash on the revamp Tich👍 Clear skies!

Thanks Simon, I could put some carpet tile strips on one side I guess but the shutter itself would still have some steel showing because of how it's been built & designed, I guess that's the problem when buying second hand or used. Mind you it can get really hot in there in Summer & if you remember the flocking material inside the RASA came unstuck so I could see the same thing happening on the roof. Poor spiders keep getting evicted but they must like it in there as they're always back again lol.
      Clear skies mate

Hey Tich well done with the mount. It's amazing how much you can save going second hand. I've had a few scopes and cameras second hand now and you save a fortune. That's great value for money and having tracking at that level is super.

Thanks mate I think the mount has been tuned by someone in the past as there was none of the gloopy grease that Synta use on it, there's barely any backlash either so after PHD has done calibrating it only takes a few seconds for it to settle down so I guess I lucked out there.

Hi, fantastic you've managed to salvage this potentially accurate well built mount , I did something similar buying a package from David Hinds mid 2000s this was a 9.25 SCT with Advanced GT mount, scope is still very good an original USA one, sadly the electronics eventually died and sat idle for a few years, later an advert caught my eye in Sky at Night mag, ioptron were selling a goto nova kit for this mount, so I bought and retro fitted it, It's still going strong today, cleaned and regularly serviced they should in theory last many years, but Celestrons can be problematic. Ive just serviced the optics the old 9.25 SCT today, I believe with off axis guiding, reducer flattner on my super tuned AVX mount (gluten for punishment!! ) it may give good results, that's if clouds ever go away!! Regards, atb Tom.

I did contact David Hinds about sorting out the RASA & the mount but I think they were slowly shutting up shop as they didn't seem interested. Celestron themselves offer no support for the mount so I were kinda stuck until I came across the ONSTEP kit. Mechanically the mount is sound so to get it working again saved it from being scrapped. I'm glad I did as it's proved to be a keeper.
      Clear skies

Thanks mate & yeah this season has been awful hasn't it? I think we had a couple of clear skies last week but the Moon was near as damn it full so I never bothered.
Lets hope we get some clear skies soon.

Looks like it was a great decision to retrofit the kit and the money spent on the kit looks like it's actually saved to heaps if you were considering having to fork out for a new mount. The tracking sounds great too. CS

Thanks Logan definitely one of my better decisions I've made in this hobby as I have made some pretty poor ones to over the years.

Nice update Tich. Great setup you've built there and affordable. Probably one of the most expensive hobbies there are and lots to learn. Keep up the good work and lets have some clear skies eh.

Thanks Rob we've had a couple of clear skies but the Moon has been so bright so I haven't bothered as yet, hopefully I'll get out soon though.

That is one heck of a mount. My jaw dropped when you said how much you've invested so far... I keep looking at the astronomy exchanges, eBay, Kijiji here in Canada, used equipment still seems very expensive. Nice image of the Pinwheel, the colour really comes through. How much integration time was that? If you are looking for something that will do a quick job of stacking and processing, you might have a look at refurbished, slightly older model gaming PCs or laptops. CS!

Thanks it was Celestrons flagship mount which in the day cost 5K new but sadly it had flaws which were mainly electronically based, Celestron don't offer any spares or support for them anymore so I'd imagine there are a lot of disgruntled owners out there although a few are still working ok. Mine was totally dead due to water damage anyway but the ONSTEP kit is a good way to get these mounts working again & from my years experience from using mine it's proven to be a very good solid mount. I think in its past it has had a tune up hence why the guiding is so good better than what I could manage with my Skywatcher mount.
As for the pinwheel galaxy image total integration was only 3 hours 36 minutes bearing in mind it was shot with the RASA 11 at F2.2 but seeing turned bad pretty quickly to so it didn't turn out to be the sharpest image I've shot with it.
The Antlia triband RGB filter however is showing some great promise, clear skies!!
