  • Let's revisit an old AccuQuilt die technique and see if it still holds up. With the new AccuQuilt dies that include two-tone colored foam, marking the dies might seem outdated. But I will show you why it's still a valuable tool for precision cutting and saving fabric. I'll break down the pros and cons and show you how to mark your dies like a pro. Join me for a live demo and decide for yourself!

Hi Tammi, I love your video. I have had my Accuquilt dies for about 5 years. Can I give you a couple tips. The paint tape on the back is not a good idea. As you use the die the tap can come off and get it caught in the cutter and what the width of the fabric you use for cutting is something that you want always so why not put it on the back with a black marker. Plus you may notice that at times the labels on the side come off. If the info come off you can have to info on the back, and I do have the 2 tone dies. Now if you can't cut on the bias, you can spray starch the fabric so that it won't stretch.
The strip dies and the blocks are my favorite. This system does not waist fabric if anything it is a benefit, I find that most people that I work with are afraid of them.
So happy that you are starting this, as you work with it you find yourself being able to convert a pattern so you can use it with the cutters.
Great job!!!! Oh I don't have the program for writing a patter, I tend to use graph paper, but I have thought about it.

Hey Karen😊. Thank you so much for your detailed response! Thanks for the guidance on NOT putting painters tape on the back of the dies!! I’m just getting started here so I would love it if you’d stick with me and share all your helpful, experienced guidance 🥰. We can do this together, as a community 😊. I’m so glad you you’re here Karen 😊

There is an app for Accuquilt dies to keep track of dies you have

Hey Bettina😊. I’m aware of it but haven’t tried it yet! I’m not quite that organized 😂. Thanks for being SO supportive 🙏🏽😘

All you do is take a pic of barcode and the app adds it automatically. If no barcode, just enter the die number

7:03 This has always been the most confusing part for me (trying to figure out which way to place the fabric) 😂

Hey girl! 🥰 I’m so glad you joined in. Yes, it was confusing to me until my girl Pam Heller explained it as “label towards your belly button”. That really resonated with me 😊. I’m so glad you’re here & appreciate your continued support my friend🥰

Hi Tammi. I’m new here and I love watching your show. But I have a question on the marking. If you lay your fabric following the drawn lines doesn’t it make the grain of the fabric out of line? Conversely if you cut the fabric like you said and then lay the fabric straight with the top of the die won’t it be a little too narrow in some spots. I hope this make sense. (Maybe the heat down here east of San Diego has fried my brain so sorry if my logic is wonky). Thanks. Joyce

Hey Joyce😊. Thank you for your questions 😊Technically, yes, laying your fabric the way I describe takes it off grain. The discrepancy is accounted for by how the fabric rolls across the blades when cutting. I compensate by starching my fabric & pressing it to get the wrinkles out before cutting with AccuQuilt, that stabilizes the fibers of the fabric. If you want, you can add 1/2” on either side vs 1/4”, that way you’ll be sure to have enough to make sure your shapes are accurately cut out. I hope this makes sense, it’s hot as well here😂. I appreciate you being here. I’ll see you in the next video 😊👋🏽

Sorry I missed the live, Tammi. I do mark my dies, too, with a silver or bronze sharpie. While I do have a 2 1/2 inch strip die and a multiple size one for smaller strips, I prefer a ruler and rotary cutter over the dies to cut strips. That being said, I have the 4 and 8 inch cube set which I love, and many applique dies. I totally agree with you I would like to see more innovative ways to use the dies.🙏❤😊

Hey Mary🥰. No worries on missing the live, the replay is just as well. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one in modern times marking my dies. I admire your current die collection😊. Let’s see what innovative ways we can come up with to use our AccuQuilt dies here in this community! I appreciate you being here and will see you in the next video 😊👋🏽

For those strips you have precut, see if you can fold the in 1/2 and use them on your #5 die and you may find that you can use the for flying geese. These should work on qube they originally were cut for.

Thanks for another wonderful tip Karen🥰. I have the 4” Qube as well so that’s another option. Trust me, that fabric won’t go to waste 😂. I’ll figure “something” to do with it😂. I’ll see you in the next video 😊👋🏽

I agree with you on the accuquilt sponsored videos….i don’t watch them for that reason. They seem like a total sales pitch rather than a learning experience.

Hi JPowley😊. I’m glad that they are selling products because I need them to stay in business 😂. I will do my best to fill the training & learning gap here on this channel. Stay tuned, I’m just getting started 🥰
