Did the Arabs even care about trying to decipher the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, through the CENTURIES in which they ruled Egypt?

    • @MandyJMaddison
      @MandyJMaddison 5 років тому +6

      Kausik J,
      You have just repeated the stupid error made by nearly every article and You Tube video from India about the Kohinoor Diamond.
      They ALL, as in EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE, show the Queen wearing the Imperial State Crown.
      That crown DOES have a large diamond, bigger, in fact, than the Kohinoor. It is Cullinan II, the Second Star of Africa.
      The Kohinoor Diamond is not in the crown that they keep showing. It is in the crown of the Queen Consort.
      If you find a balcony photo f the Coronation of George VI, then His Queen is wearing the Kohinoor Diamond. You can see in this photo that the diamond that is in the Imperial State Crown is much bigger, and rectangular, nor round.
      The Queen has never worn the crown that holds the Kohinoor Diamond. It made its last public appearance in 2001 when it rested on top of the casket of the Queen Mother, at her funeral.
      The next person to wear it will be either Camilla or Catherine, on the day of their husband's Coronation.
      Saying that they could not afford to buy a diamond for the Queen's crown is really rather ridiculous. They COULD, but usually don't. Diamonds like the Kohinoor are given to them.
      The reason that the Kohinoor was given to Victoria was because by that date she held the title "Empress of India", so in a sense, the Diamond was still in the hands of the Indian ruler.
      It could have been retrned at the time of the partition, but then it would simply have become another bone of contention between India and Pakistan who both claim it. So does Iran, and so does Russia.
      It is probably better if it remains at the Tower of London, where Indians, Pakistanis, Iranians and Russians can all come and look at it.

    • @MandyJMaddison
      @MandyJMaddison 5 років тому +4

      Shivam Sharma,
      can I suggest that you look up recent lootings of treasures from India's temples.
      It goes on all the time, and it is Indians who are responsible for it.
      Several museums have recently returned treasures which they bought, fully certified, at auction, in recent years.
      The theft is an ongoing problem as more and more ruthless people see religious artefacts as a source of money.
      Dealing with this problem is far more significant than complaining about artefacts that the British Museum acquired during the 19th century.
      With the Museum objects, there whereabouts is known, they are maintained and displayed, free of charge, to the World.
      This is a very different problem to the destruction of objcts for thei metal and jewels, and he disappearance of artworks into private collections where they may not be seen for years.

      A lot of it was bought, sold and traded with the British. Some of it discovered in archaeological digs. It is rare something was just 'looted' and stolen. For example, a lot of the Greek artefacts were sold to Britain by the Ottoman Empire in the 1800s, to avoid their destruction. Today Greece says they are 'stolen', because they were ruled by the Ottomans at the time.
      The Indian Koh-i-Noor Diamond which is a popular item Indians claimed was stolen/looted, was investigated and in 2016 the Indian supreme ruled court that the Koh-i-Noor had been given freely to the British in the mid-19th century by Maharajah Ranjit Singh, and was “neither stolen nor forcibly taken by British rulers.
      There are many items around the world owned by collectors of different origins to the items. The British Museum just have the largest collection since it fascinated them long before most countries started opening museums themselves. Many items have been saved from destruction.

      It's difficult to imagine a concept of history as limited as this. (It almost sounds like a vacuous thing that Donald Trump would say.)
      Beholding the greatest material objects of different regions throughout history is not looking at mere physical objects, but the intellects, religion and even science of the time in question. The paucity of curiosity displayed by your words is tragedy enough.
      Perhaps you're very young. Perhaps you were raised to appreciate very little in the world in general. Yet to only see pitiable beggars when you gaze upon those interested in history is an opposite view of what is really in the reflecting glass. Here's hoping you may be brought to appreciate what was grand, what was awful, what was brilliant from times past, for without the measuring stick of history, it's impossible to tell where we're even going.

    I have traveled to almost 30 countries around the world. Every large museum in the world has looted goods from neighboring countries. Including the National Museum of Ghana, the National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh, even the Tibet Museum in Lhasa, the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Do you seriously think that the Greeks asked the Persians for permission to have all the artifacts they have on display from the Peloponnesian War?

    "From 1801 to 1812, agents of Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin removed about half of the surviving sculptures of the Parthenon, as well as sculptures from the Propylaea and Erechtheum. The Marbles were transported by sea to Britain. Elgin later claimed to have obtained in 1801 an official decree (a firman) from the Sublime Porte, the central government of the Ottoman Empire which were then the rulers of Greece. This firman has not been found in the Ottoman archives despite its wealth of documents from the same period and its veracity is disputed. "

    I've always loved going to museums, ever since I was a kid, and the British Museum is at the top... but it is also the finest institution of imperialism. Most people just pass through it, oblivious to this fact - so did I - but the more you go, the more you see, you start to realise that the history of the peoples of the world is "owned" by a select group of people, obtained in the most unethical ways, and they control the narrative. If they could have done it, the Great Pyramid of Giza would have been removed and placed in Hyde Park or something, stone by stone - let's be real, if scale wasn't an issue Egypt would have been empty today. It's touchy but if museums like the British were to return the ancient artefacts to their rightful countries they would be left with nothing - the stakes are high, these possessions have become intertwined with the identity of Western culture. If they weren't, artefacts would have been returned every time a claim was made for it. Instead the attitude seems to be "it's rightfully ours."

  • @howtubeable
    @howtubeable 6 років тому +9

    So much irrational hatred in the comment section. Many of these treasures originally belonged to brutal kings and the idle rich. Originally, these treasures never belonged to "the people." The British Museum on the other hand offers these treasures to the public. So it's a little irrational to "return" them to the current government of the land of their origin.

You “people” have no culture, so the only thing you have to look up to is stolen artifacts your part-animal ancestors stole from humans you wish you could be like. Anywho, they’ll be taking it back with little to no hassle. The declining birth rates within your own community due to your women refusing to procreate with you and also due to them preferring other men who aren’t neanderthals would be a great aid.

    The Greeks never permitted Lord Elgin to remove the marbles of the Parthenon, since Greece was not a independent country and there was no greek government to do so in the early 1800s. The greeks were under the rule of the Ottomans during that period, until the successful Greek War of Independence that broke out in 1821. The British Museum's exhibits consist of foreign antiqueties stolen from the original countries such as Greece, Mexico, Egypt etc. Where can we see the British cultural achievements in your museum? Is there any British Hall full of statues and significant antiqueties which were made by the ancient british people? No!

    Most of these "stolen" artifacts would have been destroyed or lost forever if the British hadn't saved and preserved them, we appreciated the importance of historical artifacts before other people cared about such things,.Also the majority of the exhibits were purchased not stolen, and some of them were just rotting on the ground, so we took them as your ancestors didn't care.
    You should feel privileged and thank us that we saved/preserved your cultural artifacts and you can now come and visit them free of charge. Otherwise they would have been dust by now. The truth hurts.

      @Liz bth I sleep fine thanks, for one I wasn't there when they were taken, two the ENTIRE history of the human race is a history of conflict, theft, rape and murder. So I'm not going to prostrate and beg forgiveness just because my ancestors won the game of Empires and pretend other cultures weren't participating and wouldn't have done exactly the same given the chance. And lastly the FACT is that most of the items are not stolen, its a myth. There are some stolen items but I couldn't care less.
