This Video briefly shows what the ship did, during the first couple of years. unfortunately I made the newby error of leaving it on the VHS tape on which it was filmed (now 30 years old) so parts have deteriorated badly, especially the beginning, it does get better. The tape shows the Commissioning Ceremony, numerous TV spots, Visit to Coronation Street, Armilla and Falkland Patrols, crossing the line, Handovers and a few Port Visits. I hope it brings back a few memories to any that were on there at this time.

The sounds of F1 came to Milton Keynes as BBC's Top Gear filmed for an episode to go out on Aug 4th, I now know why there are so many roundabouts here...they make great hairpin corners. The sound should be bottled and sold! Williams, Red Bull and Lotus brought their cars along.

During the 1980's there was a debate on were the UK's 3 "Invincible" class light Carriers value for money? and should Britain sell one of them off? (The Falklands war put a stop to that argument). This was a televised investigation into the above question.

In 1986 the Royal Australian Navy Celebrated 75 years of existence, they invited a few mates over to help celebrate. WOW what a party! I think we (HMS Illustrious) spent 5 weeks alongside at Woolloomooloo in Sydney Harbour. I don't think I was ever made to feel so welcome, by so many friendly people anywhere else in the World, Fantastic time...Thank you Australia.

HMS Manchester was a Batch 3 Type 42 Destroyer, I brought her out of the builders yard in Barrow-in Furness in 1981, serving onboard for nearly 3 years, having served the country for 30 years she has now been scrapped. during her early days she seemed to be on TV all the time, these 2 pieces (saddly recorded LONG before digital Broadcasting) are not the best quality, but may still intrest those...

Aberdeen was the ships affiliated City. HMS Scylla, was one of the last ships I served on during my Royal Navy service. She was a Seawolf/Excocet armed Leander class Frigate...I say was, because she now lays on the sea bed off the Cornish Coast, after Decommissioning she was sunk to start a new life as an artificial reef...better than ending up as Razor Blades!
