Awesome Hayden! Alaska was one of my inspirations to get into chainsaw carving. I went to Homer, Alaska when I was about your age and they were carving bears there. Very cool bud!
Thanks! I don't get kickback often. The only time would be possible if I hit a bad knot, but to be honest I rarely have kickback. Just in case though, I always wear a facemark and kevlar pants.
Hey Trevor! My first saw was a $39 black and decker electric plug-in saw. I didn't have a log so I went to home depot and cut a 2x12 board down in two foot segments and glued it together to form a block. My first carving looked like a bear and it worked fine. You can get into carving with cheaper gear and do not have to have a dime tip. I didn't have the money or want to spend much when I was just getting into it. I slowly upgraded over time. Looking forward to hearing about your experiences!!! -- I would recommend all the safety gear though.
+cgriesemer I used to be a huge Avalanche fan and had a Roy and Forsberg jerseys :) That was until 2003 when the Minnesota Wild came around! Still like CO but Id have to say the wild are who i would root for to win the cup, you?!
I mean, how could you not root for those late 90's, early 2000s Avs teams? Sakic, Roy, Forsberg, Blake, Bourque...but I'm from CO, so my allegiance has never wavered -- at least you didn't switch to being a Red Wings fan, that'd be an immediate unsubscribe :)
Great how to video. Most vidz over 3 minutes are a waste but you kept it moving. No ridiculous sound bed. You sped up the process. Loved the back story. Well done!
Hi Pete! Thanks very much for this helpful and informative video. I am still a complete novice at this but your encouragement and sound advice are extremely useful. It’s nice to find someone who is supportive and kind, rather than just talking about how great they are. Cheers Pete!
Very cool. I've never seen someone take the time to explain how this is done. I don't know if I have a carving in my future but it was still entertaining to watch!
I made my first one two days ago without watching any videos and this is the first one I watched and I guess I did everything right cause I did damn near everything the same way you did!! Cheers !! That bear looks way better then mine btw haha. But my little fella turned out surprisingly well! I’ve got the bug and I’m heading out for more logs tomorrow to build more. Hehe.
Ya I’m hooked now!! I’ve never had a hobby that has grabbed a hold of me like this one has Your videos are great and a big help for novices like me Thanks again for the great material and keep the vids coming !! And all is good up in Alberta, I head down to Montana from time to time I love it there !! It’s just like Alberta but with more guns and who doesn’t love guns Haha Maybe I’ll run into you one day Haha Only a few hours away 👍👍
Awesome Rudy! I don't have kickbacks often. But I do always wear the protective gear just in case. I have a few times where i've nicked my steel toed boots or chaps. And am sure glad I've had them! Have fun!
Great project Pete. There are some great sculptures in Galveston, Texas on trees that were destroyed by the tidal surge from Hurricane Ike a few years ago. Check it out at www.galveston.com/treesculpturetour/.
Excellent video Pete. How do you see what you carve? i mean do you have pencil lines or just picture in your head where you carve? Does that go with carving experience? If that was me it wood look like firewood rather than a carving ha ha. TC, Barry (ENG)
Hey Barry! I hope all is well over in England -- good to hear from you as always! --- A lot is pictured in my head --- and if I'm trying to get a certain look I'll often print photos and look at them for guidance. Some people do pencil lines and such, it helps for some things but I don't do too much of it. I think the books have certainly helped a lot in learning some of the basics. After you get a few carvings under your belt you kind of get a little better idea of how things work. But hey, I bet your first project would look way better than a piece of firewood :) Cheers!
I started my first bear as planned, and learned a lot during the process. First of all, your tutorial was inspiring and awesome, I can pause it at any time during the process to see how you did certain things. I also learned that bigger logs are better, I started out a little small and didn't allow much room for lower regions, which leads me to my next revelation: Don't be afraid to end-up with something very different from what you had originally planned. My welcome bear became a fantastic grinning Cheschire Cat, with his head coming out of some mushrooms. It kind of impressed the hell out of people, and that was so rewarding. I can't thank you enough, Pete, you started me on the way to a very fun and rewarding hobby. All this time cutting firewood and wondering, and now I'm reminded again, that sometimes the best things in life are right there in front of you. Even my "jaded" older teenager was impressed!
Wow , awesome , damn , its around 2:30 in the morning and I was looking at chainsaw reviews and some I ended up here and am so glad I did. About 2 weeks ago I bought 10 acres and a cabin in the Southern Ozark mountians in Arkansas I’m so fired up about doing this I can’t go to sleep. Thanks man , your vid was inspiring.
Hey Tod! That's awesome you have 10 acres and a cabin and are excited to dive into carving! You'll pick it up quickly and have a ton of fun with it. There are some great books on amazon that help out a lot and some awesome videos on youtube too. Congrats on the new acreage and let me know how carving goes!!
Had a huge tree fall over our creek recently.. My family wants to make two bear carvings out that tree.. We'll see how this goes! Thanks for the video.
If you were to do this with an everyday stihl chainsaw, do you need a special chain or bar? I see you carve a lot with the tip and thought that doing so would cause a lot of kickback. Thanks
Hi Matt! You can do a lot of the carving with a normal chainsaw and I definitely have. But for the face and more intricate areas, I like to use a normal 017 chainsaw with a Dime Size bar. I ordered this kit which has everything I needed for a carving setup. It was $160.00. --- But you do not need this to get started and can make a lot of things without it. baileysonline.com/Chainsaw-Bars/Chainsaw-Carving-Bars/Carving-Bar-Kits/12-Carving-Kit-for-Stihl-017-018-019T-MS-170-171-180-181-190-191-Chainsaws.axd
Funny that last summer I made my first bear and couple more, and now came to see techniques and saw this and it's pretty much excatly how I made my bear :)
Hey Pete, I’ve been wanting to carve a bear for about 20 years now and after watching this video I finally did. Great job showing the basic cuts and shaping. It really helped me a ton. Good solid instructions for beginners. Most other videos don’t show a lot of the angles and steps.
It turned out awesome! I used Himalayan Cedar from a tree my neighbor cut down. I live in Spain and the forest is private so I needed my first attempt to count. Not sure how to send you a pic.
Hi! I would recommend a chainsaw especially for carving --- but not all folks wear them all the time. I do think it is a smart idea though and always wear my helmet. :)
Hi! I carved it in a couple hours. Then stained and polyed it afterwards. --- Let it sit overnight and gave a final coat of poly. The more you do the faster you'll get. Some folks can carve them in a matter of minutes :)
Thanks! I have the process down pretty well for something of this size. The actual carving took me about an hour. I know some carvers who have everything down so well that they could do it in about 20 minutes. The finishing goes pretty quick. I taught a student how to carve a bear a few months ago. It took him about 3 hours to get it the way he wanted it with carving. Larger bears will take more time. Once you get a few under your belt the process speeds up a lot.
Hey Stephen! I rarely get kick backs. Usually I don't even through a whole carving. However, I'm always careful and wear the protective gear in case it were to happen. I keep the saw at a pretty high rpm so it digs into everything, and avoid knots. Take care!
I am 12,and 2 years ago I went to Alaska, and I live in Georgia.I am super inspired by this
Awesome Hayden! Alaska was one of my inspirations to get into chainsaw carving. I went to Homer, Alaska when I was about your age and they were carving bears there. Very cool bud!
Actually I went 1 yr ago and I just found the picture of me next to bear in Homer,he's holding a fishing pole.
Looks great Pete. You live in some beautiful country.
Thanks Tyler! Good to hear from you man!
Mr que abilidad para manejar la maquina y hacer eso tan lindo saludos de chile.
Gracias Simon!
Man you lost me at 45 seconds when I need to find a forest... Florida sucks sometimes
Hey Josh! Ha, your comment made me chuckle. Cheers man
r u kidding? i live in tampa it's great! guys with pickup trucks all over the place with logs! :)
Nz has wood everywhere
Damn I live in Florida and I'm going to pick up free oak to carve tomorrow from a friend.
Sometimes?
Dude I finally bought land in NY in August. I'm gonna try this out !! Great video !
Have fun!
Cool!
Thanks Sean!
Do you ever get kick back from the tip of the bigger saws?
Nice bear and video. And good to take the safety seriously with such a dangerous tool.
Thanks! I don't get kickback often. The only time would be possible if I hit a bad knot, but to be honest I rarely have kickback. Just in case though, I always wear a facemark and kevlar pants.
good informative vid, thanks
Thanks!
is this doable with a cheapo electric chainsaw? i reallyw ant to try this out but dont want to invest in a new expensive chainsaw.
Hey Trevor! My first saw was a $39 black and decker electric plug-in saw. I didn't have a log so I went to home depot and cut a 2x12 board down in two foot segments and glued it together to form a block. My first carving looked like a bear and it worked fine. And someone is a Colorado Avalanche fan to boot.

For sure! Yeah Sakic was another favorite. Nope I'll never go red wings :) Good to have the hockey season back in full swing now. Cheers!
Wow. Chainsaw carving really? Is there anything you can't do? Your awesome Pete and this was a great video like always brother. Keep up the good work.
Jake thanks so much for watching man. Great to hear from ya, I hope all is going well!

Hey John! Great to hear from you and I hope all is well up in Alaska :) Cheers man!

Such a great tutorial, will start my first bear this month. Thanks so much, it will be such a blast to use the saws for more than just firewood.

What is that electric blade sharpener you using?
I'll be needing a 6ft tall grizz, that was awesome, all I have is a ms170, and 271 pretty big do you have kick backs using tip alot?
Awesome Rudy! I don't have kickbacks often. But I do always wear the protective gear just in case. I have a few times where i've nicked my steel toed boots or chaps. And am sure glad I've had them! Have fun!
Great job Pete. Love it. I tried that once and made a disaster but After seeing you do it I may try again.
Thanks Frank!

What is the chainsae what you use first. It is 036?
Yep!
The bear came out great! Not sure where you were but the location looks beautiful
Thanks Robin! Just up in the Mountains of Montana :) Cheers man
I thought youre not suposed to use the tip of the saw.
For normal use, not typically. But carvers use the end for detail work etc.
Great project Pete. There are some great sculptures in Galveston, Texas on trees that were destroyed by the tidal surge from Hurricane Ike a few years ago. Check it out at www.galveston.com/treesculpturetour/.
Hi David! Thanks so much for sharing. What a neat thing. Those carvings are fantastic. Cheers!
Fantastic!
Thanks!
Excellent video Pete. How do you see what you carve? i mean do you have pencil lines or just picture in your head where you carve? Does that go with carving experience?

Ha! You got it :)
Nice work presented video very clearly. Very interested in learning more. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Nice job brother you have some great skills with a chainsaw. The bed turned out beautiful! Keep up the good work! I'm learning from you.
Hey Raul thanks man and GREAT job with the bed project! Cheers bud.
How many chains do you go threw on a bear of that size? Well done I admire your skill!
Thanks! I can easily do an entire bear with one blade. They stay sharp as long as you don't hit dirt /soil or metal. Cheers!

What a bear! Great video!

Do u get many kick backs when carving
Hey Stephen! I rarely get kick backs. Usually I don't even through a whole carving. However, I'm always careful and wear the protective gear in case it were to happen. I keep the saw at a pretty high rpm so it digs into everything, and avoid knots. Take care!
